Network Urban Structures in Northern Italy: Elements for a Theoretical Framework

    No full text
The recent urban dynamics of industrialised countries show the rise of a new spatial order, which simplifies 'vertical' relationships between the cities and complicates, instead, the 'horizontal' inter-urban patterns. Some northern Italian regions, such as Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, have been characterised historically by polycentric settlement, which constitutes today the spatial texture of functional, economic and social relationships among the urban places, their hinterlands and their regions, according to a new order of spatial organisation. This is a network-based order, whose theoretical framework is not still well founded. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the establishment of a new theoretical paradigm, by integrating several taxonomies recently proposed by Italian researchers in urban and regional sciences. Obviously, the results of these reflections are still weak and open to further contributions, particularly with regard to other regions in north-western Europe

Beyond Productivity Slowdown: Quality, Pricing and Resource Reallocation in Regional Competitiveness

Labour productivity change at constant prices is the mainstream indicator of regional competitiveness. However, it hides and overlooks some relevant sources of competitiveness that may partly explain the Solow paradox. First, it mixes productivity improvements from technological progress with those from relocating activities to more productive sectors. Second, it partially overlooks novelties and qualities embedded in new products and the effects of market power. This paper proposes a methodology to disentangle the different effects and to apply it to recent development of European regions. Results highlight the highly heterogeneous competitive strategies of regions, and the persistent discrepancy between Eastern and Western ones

    The Milan Housing Market

    No full text
This chapter examines the main features of the housing market in the metropolitan area of Milan at the turn of the last decade of the century. In the first part we consider the main structural aspects by referring to trends in the single municipalities and urban rings. In the second part we focus on the differences in price trends in the main Italian urban centres and on prices, costs and investments in Milan

A Scientific Program on Urban Performance and Dynamics

Given the disagreement that often emerges among scholars concerning relevant urban economics issues, an in-depth analysis of the theoretical and empirical justification of the different positions looks crucial. This analysis is presented in this chapter through the lens of the scientific research program that guided the authors for more than 20 years in the field of urban performance and dynamics. The chapter therefore goes through a number of urban economics issues that were highly debated, and provides the way in which the authors have addressed (and partly solved) such theoretical and empirical issues. The chapter provides a historical perspective; engaging in this critical analysis encompassing a long period of time refers to the possibility of taking some distance with respect to the evolution of economic thought concerning cities and consequently of being in a better condition for pointing out possible ignored or overlooked scientific dimensions that could fruitfully be inquired now on
