    The AM Canum Venaticorum binary SDSS J173047.59+554518.5

    The AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries are a rare group of hydrogen-deficient, ultrashort period, mass-transferring white dwarf binaries and are possible progenitors of Type Ia supernovae. We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the recently discovered AM CVn binary SDSS J173047.59+554518.5. The average spectrum shows strong double-peaked helium emission lines, as well as a variety of metal lines, including neon; this is the second detection of neon in an AM CVn binary, after the much brighter system GP Com. We detect no calcium in the accretion disc, a puzzling feature that has been noted in many of the longer period AM CVn binaries. We measure an orbital period, from the radial velocities of the emission lines, of 35.2 ± 0.2 min, confirming the ultracompact binary nature of the system. The emission lines seen in SDSS J1730 are very narrow, although double-peaked, implying a low-inclination, face-on accretion disc; using the measured velocities of the line peaks, we estimate i ≤ 11°. This low inclination makes SDSS J1730 an excellent system for the identification of emission lines

    Since phospholipids have been suggested to play some role in the molecular organisation of the nuclear matrix, the effect of their removal by means of phospholipase C has been investigated in regenerating rat liver nuclear matrix. The matrix-bound DNA polymerase alpha shows an almost complete loss of activity following the digestion with phospholipase C. Since the polymerase activity is restored by adding exogenous DNA, we suggest that the effect is due to the removal of matrix residual DNA, which is in some way linked to the nuclear matrix by means of hydrophobic interactions

    Heparin down-regulates the phorbol ester-induced protein kinase C gene expression in human endothelial cells: enzyme-mediated autoregulation of protein kinase C-alpha and -delta genes

    Overexpression of protein kinase C-delta and protein kinase C-delta has been shown to modulate a number of biological effects, including the cell growth and differentiation. We hypothesized that heparin, a potent antimitogenic drug, could affect the cell proliferation by inhibiting the expression of specific protein kinase C genes. Heparin, markedly but not completely, inhibited the serum-stimulated protein kinase C-delta and -delta mRNA expression. Protein kinase C inhibition or downregulation significantly decreased the serum-induced protein kinase C isoenzyme gene expression. Heparin failed to inhibit the residual effect of serum that was resistant to the above-mentioned treatments. Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate elicited an increase of protein kinase C isoenzyme gene expression that was completely prevented by protein kinase C inhibition or downregulation. Heparin dose-dependently counteracted and ultimately abolished the increase in the protein kinase C isoenzyme gene expression elicited by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, These results suggest that the inhibition of an autoregulatory role wielded by protein kinase C on the protein kinase C-delta and -delta gene expression might represent a possible mechanism by which glycosaminoglycans modulate the cell growth.     Sociality to reach objects and to catch meaning

    Sociality influences both concrete and abstract concepts acquisition and representation, but in different ways. Here we propose that sociality is crucial during the acquisition of abstract concepts but less for concrete concepts, that have a bounded perceptual referent and can be learned more autonomously. For the acquisition of abstract concepts, instead, the human relation would be pivotal in order to master complex meanings. Once acquired, concrete words can act as tools, able to modify our sensorimotor representation of the surrounding environment. Indeed, pronouncing a word the referent of which is distant from us we implicitly assume that, thanks to the contribution of others, the object becomes reachable; this would expand our perception of the near bodily space. Abstract concepts would modify our sensorimotor representation of the space only in the earlier phases of their acquisition, specifically when the child represents an interlocutor as a real, physical “ready to help actor” who can help her in forming categories and in explaining the meaning of words that do not possess a concrete referent. Once abstract concepts are acquired, they can work as social tools: the social metacognition mechanism (awareness of the of our concepts and of our need of the help of others) can evoke the presence of a “ready to help actor” in an implicit way, as a predisposition to ask information to fill the knowledge gaps

    A c-myb antisense oligodeoxynucleotide inhibits normal human hematopoiesis in vitro.

    The nuclear protein encoded by the proto-oncogene c-myb has been hypothesized to play an important role in the process of hematopoiesis, but direct proof of this function has been lacking. To address this issue, normal human bone marrow mononuclear cells were exposed to c-myb sense and antisense synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides, and the effects on hematopoietic colony formation and maturation were examined. Exposure of these cells to c-myb antisense, oligodeoxynucleotides resulted in a decrease in both colony size and number, without apparent effect on the maturation of residual colony cells. Exposure to c-myb sense, or irrelevant antisense, oligonucleotides had no such effect. These results show that (i) c-myb plays a critical role in regulating normal human hematopoiesis and (ii) the combined use of antisense oligodeoxynucleotides and hematopoietic cell culture techniques will provide a powerful tool for studying the role of proteins encoded by proto-oncogenes, or other specific genes, in normal human hematopoiesis

    Am Mittelrhein kommen vier Cinclidotus-Arten vor: C. mucronatus, C. fontinloides, C. riparius und C. danubicus. Die Standorte sind nach der Höhe über der Mittelwasserlinie differenziert. Am deutlichsten setzt sich C. mucronatus ab, welche in Lagen vorkommt, die nur gelegentlich von Hochwässern erreicht wird. Darunter steht C. fontinaloides, welche bis über der Mittelwasserlinie zu finden ist. Cinclidotus riparius schließt sich im Bereich darunter an. In den tiefsten, am häufigsten überschwemmten Lagen steht C. danubicus
