The letter is typed on California Institute of Technology letterhead, from the chemistry lab of Gates and Crellin.Pauling says it was a pleasure to talk with Zeitlin the other evening and thanks him for sending a first edition of Pauling\u27s book for his examination. After examining the annotations, Pauling affirms that while he did not find anything new to him (many of the remarks in the marginalia having been addressed in the second edition), "I was pleased to see what one reader had done." Pauling may be referencing his 1939 book _The nature of the chemical bond and the structure of molecules and crystals; an introduction to modern structural chemistry_ . In addition to winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the role of science in a free society and his anti-nuclear proliferation stance, Pauling also published texts on line spectra, quantum mechanics, the nature of the chemical bond, and the use of Vitamin C to combat cancer

    Gelfand-Zeitlin actions and rational maps

We observe that the analogue of the Gelfand-Zeitlin action on gl(n, C), which exists on any symplectic manifold M with an Hamiltonian action of GL(n, C), has a natural interpretation as a residual action, after we identify M with a symplectic quotient of M x Pi(n)(i=1) T GL(i, C). We also show that the Gelfand-Zeitlin actions on T GL(n, C) and on the regular part of gl(n, C) can be identified with natural Hamiltonian actions on spaces of rational maps into full flag manifolds, while the Gelfand-Zeitlin action on the whole gl(n, C) corresponds to a natural action on a space of rational maps into the manifold of half-full flags in C-2n.Alexander von Humboldt Foundatio

Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT)

Of all the EU’s external policies, the Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) initiative is among the most clearly experimentalist. This initiative seeks to combat illegal logging and promote sustainable forestry through negotiating Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) with developing countries and requiring all firms placing timber products on the EU market to ensure that they were not illegally harvested in their place of origin. As the chapter shows, both the VPAs and the EU Timber Regulation display pronounced experimentalist features, in terms of their regulatory approach, governance architecture, and interactions with other public and private transnational regimes operating in this field. But as the chapter also demonstrates, the development and dynamics of this EU experimentalist regime are as much a product of transnational influences from multilateral institutions, NGO campaigns, and interactions with third countries such as the US, as of endogenous developments within the Union itself

Richard S. « Scotty » MacNeish at the Lowe Ranch archaeological site, Belize, C. A., April 1982 (Photograph by Robert N. Zeitlin). On January 16, 2001, archaeology lost one of its most distinguished practitioners and arguably its most colorful character when Richard Stockton MacNeish, affectionately known as « Scotty » to friends and colleagues, succumbed to injuries suffered in an automobile crash in the Mountain Pine Ridge area of Belize. Unwilling, despite a failing heart, to surrender his..

Wasted lives and expulsions. A study of Beasts of the Southern Wild by Benh Zeitlin

    No full text
The author analyzes the mutual determinants of the ecological and social crisis. The starting point is Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of wasted lives and the concept of expulsions proposed by Saskia Sassen, referring both to activities destroying specific areas and the communities inhabiting them. This frame includes films showing various scenarios of a dystopian future in which individual characters or entire groups have been consumed and expelled by the aggressive Capithalocene and doomed to live in the dustbin of contemporary civilization. The article focuses on the production Beasts of the Southern Wild directed by Benh Zeitlin. The author looks at the reality and, at the same time, the symbolism of the film’s wall/dam; communities living on both sides of it, relationships between nature and culture, or rather (in posthumanist terms it is written as one word – natureculture); the methods and consequences of excluding and expelling human and non-human beings used by the mechanisms of late capitalism
