Conference Virality, platforms and influence
Within the framework of the HIVI project, related to the history of online virality and supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) (C20/SC/14758148), this conference, organised by Fred Pailler and Valérie Schafer (C²DH, University of Luxembourg), will analyse the role that platforms and diverse stakeholders (i.e., celebrities, entrepreneurs, companies, politicians, NGO, journalists, activists, users, etc.) play in the spread, diffusion, circulation or moderation and invisibilisation of digital content.
It will intertwine case study based approach and more theoretical ones, and question methods, audiences, formats, discourses, reception, etc. to better unfold the complexity of viral contents and the key notion of influence.R-AGR-3937 - C20/SC/14758148/HIVI - SCHAFER Valéri

Facial-selective allylation of methyl ketones for the asymmetric synthesis of alpha-substituted tertiary homoallylic ethers
The asymmetric synthesis of enantiomerically pure alpha -substituted tertiary homoallylic ethers 4a, 11 and 12a-c by the allylation of ethyl methyl ketone (1a) with gamma -substituted allylsilanes 9a-h is described. The allylsilanes were obtained by a nickel-catalysed Grignard cross-coupling reaction of (E)- and (Z)-(3-iodoallyl)trimethylsilane with various Grignard reagents. The reaction of the allylsilanes with 1a in the presence of the trimethylsilyl ether of N-trifluoroacetylnorpseudoephedrine (3), and catalytic amounts of a mixture of trimethylsilyl triflate and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid led to the homoallylic ethers 4a, 11 and 12a-c with two new stereogenic centres, with a selectivity of 1:9 to >20:1 for the homoallylic and of 1:99 to >60:1 for the allylic centre. The facial selectivity does not depend on the configuration of the allylsilane, and in all reactions the anti product is preferentially formed. Interestingly a pronounced switch of facial selectivity takes place with increasing length of the alkyl group of the allylsilane
tert-Butyldiphenylsilylhydrazine - Precursors for tetra(silyl)hydrazines, silylhydrazones, and O-silylpyrazolones
tert-Butylchlorodiphenylsilane reacts with hydrazine in presence of triethylamine to give the mono(silyl)hydrazine Me3CSiPh2NHNH2 (1). The lithium derivative of 1 (la) forms the N,N'-bis(silyl)hydrazines 2 and 3 in the reaction with chlorosilanes. (2: Me3CSiPh2NHNHSiPh2CMe3; 3: Me3CSiPh2NHNHSiMe2CMe3). The monomeric dilithium-hydrazide 4, (Me3CSiPh2)(2)N2Li2(THF)(3), is obtained from 2 and the bimolar amount of C4H9Li in THF. 4 reacts with an excess of SiF4 to give the tetra(silyl)hydrazine 5, Me3CSiPh2(SiF3)N-N(SiF3)SiPh2CMe3. 1 and ketones undergo condensation to silylhydrazones, Me3CSiPh2NHN=C(Me)R (6: R = Me; 7: R = CMe3), with elimination of H2O. Only one of the two possible isomers of 7 is formed. Cis/trans isomers (8 a, b) are obtained in the analogous reaction of 1 and ethyl acetoacetate, Me3CSiPh2NH-N=CMe-CH2-COOEt (8 a,b). 8 condenses thermally with elimination of EtOH and formation of the O-silylpyrazolone 9, Me3CSiPh2O-(C=N-NH-CMe=CH-). The results of the crystal structure analysis of the compounds 2, 4, and 7 are reported

Schafer C, Mattay J. Preparation of photocyclizable dianthracene derivatives of resorc[4]arenes which are potential photoswitches. PHOTOCHEMICAL & PHOTOBIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. 2004;3(4):331-333.Resorc[4] arenes have been difunctionalized on opposite sides of the macrocycle using two anthracene units, which undergo intramolecular dimerization on irradiation at 350 nm. Syntheses and time-dependent photochemical experiments are reported
Võ Phiến and the Sadness of Exile
Võ Phiến and the Sadness of Exile describes the life and work of one of the most respected writers in the Vietnamese diaspora. A well-known writer in Vietnam before he sought refuge in the United States in 1975, Võ Phiến continued to write in the U.S. He published numerous stories and essays and edited a seven-volume collection of works written in South Vietnam from 1954 - 1975. In this first book-length study in English of a modern Vietnamese writer, Schafer introduces readers to an author who has much to teach us about war, revolution and exile in a strange land.https://digitalcommons.humboldt.edu/monographs/1001/thumbnail.jp
