An adaptive probabilistic model for straight edge-extraction within a multilevel MRF framework
Statistical approaches to ill-posed image processing problems such as restoration, segmentation and edge-detection have been proposed previously that were based on Markov random fields (MRFs). MRFs provide a regularization framework where a-priori knowledge expressed in a probabilistic way can be used together with available data for obtaining solutions characterized by a "good" global behaviour. A-priori knowledge and evidential knowledge can be used to specify constraints on the solution within a probabilistic functional. Observation models are necessary to capture evidential knowledge, i.e., the relations between the solution and data acquired either by a physical or a logical device. The present paper is based on a multilevel MRF approach introduced in Regazzoni (1994) and Regazzoni and Venetsanopoulos aiming at three different tasks: 1) to detect straight lines, 2) to restore the original image, and 3) to detect edge points. In particular, a new line detection approach is introduced, consisting in a progressive relaxation of the threshold used to establish the line presence in an appropriate parameter space. The method is applied to SAR remote sensing
The author critically examines the various theses about the judicial review of an «extremely modest» penalty clause. After a comparison with the French legal system, the author argues that such review is allowed by the direct application of Art. 1229 of the Civil Code to the penalty clause, where the agreed amount is significantly lower than the foreseeable damage. Furthermore, an analysis is drawn of the effects that the provision of nullity under Art. 1229 may have in such a case, with the aim of maintaining the benefits granted by the penalty to the creditor

Multimedia communication techniques for remote cable-based video-surveillance systems
his paper aims at presenting a study of costs and performance concerning different multimedia communication techniques that can be employed in the context of the implementation of 2/sup nd/ generation remote video-surveillance systems using wired cable TV networks as a communication means. The multimedia information is acquired by video sensors and transmitted through the CATV network to a remote control centre, where a PC-based image processing architecture performs the image processing tasks needed by the implementation of the foreseen system functionalities. The paper will show some possible analogue and digital solutions to the problems concerning the real-time multimedia data transmission in generic cable-based AVS applications. Laboratory simulations of multimedia data transmission over upstream noisy channels have been performed in order to test the performance in terms of quality of the received images provided by the most advanced high-speed commercial cable modem systems
A Distributed Surveillance System for Detection of Abandoned Objects in Unmanned Railway Environments
Adaptive tracking of multiple non rigid objects in cluttered scenes
Tracking of non-rigid objects (e.g. humans) is a crucial application for understanding the behavior of objects. Different methods have been presented in literature, whose main drawback is low robustness or high computational load in analysis of cluttered scenes. In the paper a low computational algorithm for tracking non-rigid objects in cluttered scenes is presented. The proposed approach models the shape of the objects by using corners. A learning algorithm is introduced in order to automatically extract the model of the object from a short video sequence acquired immediately before merging of more objects in the scene. The adaptive model extraction mechanism strongly improves method robustness. The method is tested on an existing video-surveillance system in order to track moving objects in cluttered scenes. Results show that the proposed approach gives good performances with low-processing times
