Memory and the Sublime in Post-Industrial Parks

    No full text
The post-industrial park is conceived as an exposition space that, thanks to a design concept and a project, includes a large part of land, where nature and wildlife are represented and exposed together with ruinous industrial buildings or, at the minimum, fragments of productive structures and factories. The feeling of the sublime that cross those parks does not have the contemplative and nostalgic character of Romanticism, the disruptiveness of the creative action of Land Art or the illusion of a potential salvation of the first post-industrial parks, but is rather based on the recognition of a subtle equilibrium among the fragility of anthropic artifacts and the landscape that hosts them

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Urban Gardens

    No full text
The chapter considers small urban gardens as a means of regenerating fragile, abandoned or disused interstitial areas of the city. Tracing the history of the contemporary garden, and in particular, the American pocket parks, the French "jardin de poche" and the participatory experiences of European urban gardens, the urban garden is recognised as having the interior, inclusive and domestic qualities of an "open-air room". The chapter is included in the Book Series "ii inclusive interiors" with International Scientific Committee and peer-review procedure

Michel Desvigne and urbanité à venir

Contemporary landscape architecture of the “French school”, whose theoretical pivot is supported, among others, by the studies of Augustin Berque, Pierre Donadieu and Alain Roger, and which includes the heterogeneous operational contributions of Gilles Clément, Bernard Lassus, Michel Corajoud, and Michel Desvigne, has emerged in all its importance in recent decades, especially in the development of large-scale urban projects. It must also be noted that, in the recent past, this new line of thought has received fundamental contributions with regard to the concept of environment (Tissier 1996), of space (Bachelard 1961), of milieu (from Paul Vidal de la Blache to Augustin Berque) or of espace (Lévy 1999). Also reflections developed by geography of “naturalist” inspiration, capable of going beyond the description and elaboration of typologies, aimed at underlining and highlighting the recurrent frequency of structures, have constituted a further decisive contribution (Repishti 2008, pp. 33-38)

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
