    Noncontact tonometry in children

    No full text
A hand-held noncontact tonometer (Pulsair, Keeler Ltd., UK) was tested in 42 children, from 5 months to 12 years of age. At least 1 intraocular pressure (IOP) reading was obtained in all of the 84 eyes studied, whereas with a Goldman applanation tonometer measurements could be obtained in only 26 eyes (14 subjects). Time required for examination with the Pulsair was quite variable and related to age (p less than 0.0001). Compliance in children was reported as "good" in the majority of cases; it was also age-related (p less than 0.005). Although its reliability could not be definitely evaluated, the results of this study indicate that this instrument may be a valuable choice for screening and follow-up purposes in childhood

Households’ Preferences for a New ‘Climate-Friendly’ Heating System: Does Contribution to Reducing Greenhouse Gases Matter?

    No full text
This study investigates the preferences of Italian home-owners when choosing a new domestic heating system. The focus is on understanding the influence on consumer choice of a potential label certifying the effect of the heating system on the greenhouse effect. To this end, we designed a survey including a discrete choice experiment and administered it to residents in north-eastern Italy. Our findings reveal that, on average, respondents pay particular attention to the green effect of their purchase. The carbon dioxide reduction label was considered second in terms of importance after cost. Further analysis found that our sample presents three clusters of customers, with intra-cluster homogeneous preferences. The cluster analysis showed that while the initial system costs are considered to varying degrees by the whole sample, the carbon dioxide reduction label was considered important by 79% of respondents (members of clusters 1 and 2). To achieve greater results in reducing the greenhouse effect of the domestic heating sector, a combination of policies should be used simultaneously to achieve greater effectiveness. Our simulations support the hypothesis that policymakers should achieve greater results in terms of reducing the domestic greenhouse gas emissions by applying a combined policy that leverages the importance citizens accord to the different characteristics of a heating system. From our results, the application of a ‘low carbon dioxide ( C O 2) emissions’ label will amplify the effect of a subsidy that reduces the initial system costs

Packaging e comunicazione: una ricerca empirica nelle zone vinicole del Friuli Venezia Giulia

Packaging and communication: an empirical research in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region - Due to some different factors, the communication role of packaging is becoming more important for numerous products. To communicate effectively, marketers need to know how communication actually works. On the basis of this consideration, supported by several theoretical and empirical evidences, the authors refer to the model of the communication process in order to develop a field research. This model explains the relations between the sender and the receiver, and the related encoding and decoding process. The aim is first of all to point out, classify, and analyze the main contents of the message and the components of packaging used by a sample of wineries in the Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli area, and then to relate these aspects with the structural and competitive features of the firms.Packaging, communication, wine industry, message, factor analysis

Perception of protected areas: Evidence from an italian alpine area

    No full text
The objective of the study was to investigate perception of Alpine protected areas (APAs), which play a crucial role in protecting local natural, social and economic values. We proposed a research model in which the positive behavioral intention towards APAs was assumed to be affected by environmental awareness, awareness of wildlife, and perception of ecological connectivity and its functions. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test causalities. Our findings indicated that environmental awareness is not, per se, the determinant of a positive behavioral intention towards APAs: in fact, some specific and closely interlinked elements, such as awareness of wildlife and perception of ecological connectivity, heavily affected the behavioral intention towards a responsible fruition of APAs. The managerial implications of this work include some considerations: a) perception of protected areas has to be analyzed to bolster a positive behavioral intention towards responsible fruition of protected areas; b) awareness of wildlife and perception of ecological connectivity have a crucial role and could be used to strengthen responsible fruition of protected areas; c) these aspects could act as a lever to attract tourists, investors and other stakeholders. These findings should become the basis to plan effective policies, including communication and marketing activities, aimed at bolstering responsible fruition of protected areas as well as of the Alps as a whole

Who Cleans the Plate? Quantity and Type of Food Waste in 78 Primary Schools’ Canteens in Italy

    No full text
In advanced economies, most food waste occurs at the downstream stages of the supply chain; within the EU, it has been estimated that 64.57% of food waste occurs at the consumption stage, with about 5.4 million tons (9.45% of the total) being generated in food service. This study aims to contribute to this stream of research by providing evidence about the quantity of food waste produced in Italian primary schools and discussing the results against the evidence available in other EU countries. This research is based on a large-scale study involving 78 primary schools and over 11,000 students for a total number of almost 110,000 monitored meals. The results show that the amount of food not consumed at lunch is 21.7% of the food prepared every day. Plate waste accounts for almost 90 g/day per capita and the total amount of wasted food, including unserved food, accounts for 117 g/day per capita. To our knowledge, this study represents the largest sample size monitored in Italy under the framework of the EC Delegated Decision (EU) 2019/1597 on food waste measurement. Given its scale and adherence to the EU’s standardized methodology, this dataset should serve as the reference data for Italy reported to Eurostat, as it is based on direct measurements rather than estimates or secondary data sources. This underscores the importance of systematic, comparable data collection for tracking progress on food waste reduction at both national and European levels

Predictors of purchase intention for poultry products. The case of Mac Pollo in the city of Bogotá

Mac Pollo is the organization with the largest market share in Colombia in the sale of frozen poultry products and their derivatives. The author proposes a conceptual work based on the little literature found regarding the purchase intention (PI) of this type of goods and, for this purpose, aims to identify the predictors that lead to an effective food purchase. An online survey was applied to a sample of 358 people in the city of Bogota. The data analysis was carried out using the method of Structural Equations with Structures in Variance (PLS-SEM), using R software. The results show that variables such as trust, entrepreneurial capacity, positioning, consumer awareness and health are the most relevant for the consumer of this type of products. The above, representing an important input for all those primary goods
