Beaufort West, Christ Anglican Church (Central Karoo District)
Information and photographs of the Christ Anglican Church in Beaufort West. Along the same street in Beaufort West as the Old Town Hall and the DRC, one finds the Christ Anglican Church. This church has been constructed under the architectural guidance of Sophie Gray in 1855. Somewhat uncommon for churches of this architect, the bell tower is a detached iron construction on the right hand side of the church. The bell in the tower is well kept and seemingly loved by the pigeons. In between a pair of double moulding wires one reads
C & G MEARS FOUNDERS LONDON 1857 the successors of Thomas Mears whose bells hang in the DRC
St Mark's Anglican Church, George (Eden District)
The Anglican Cathedral of St Mark in George is among the most photographed sites in the Western Cape. The Sophie Gray church dates from 1850 and is surrounded by a lovely garden that enhances the beauty of the front side of the church. In a high up turret hangs a bell that defies measuring. What can be seen is that the bell has the traditional distribution of moulding wires: Two pairs below the shoulder, three above the knee and two on the lip. In between the top wires stands a text that is only partially decipherable: C. & G. MEARS FOUNDERS … Since Charles and George Mears worked at the Whitechapel foundry in London between 1844 and 1861 one can guess that the year of founding should have been close to 1850, the time when the cathedral was inaugurated

Henrietta C. Mears: Evangelical Entrepreneur
As a practitioner of Christian education, Henrietta C. Mears had possibly the most far-reaching impact on the conduct of ministry of any woman of the 20th century. The scope of her work has extended worldwide and her influence continues today, two generations after her passing. One writer in Christianity Today (Zoba, 1996) called her “the grandmother of us all”, since her vision of the Christian life so greatly inspired the young people of her day who in turn passed this vision on to contemporary evangelicals. Touching virtually the whole range of potential Christian education ministry, Henrietta Mears provided a comprehensive and integrated model of religious education within the local church, the parachurch, and the Church around the world. Traditional areas of religious education such as program administration, curriculum, teaching, teacher training and leadership development, camping, and missions education each underwent innovations and change through her influence. Her life is a compelling study in Christ-like character, dependence on God, and the training of leaders for evangelism and ministry. </jats:p
Market, Wellington (Winelands District)
Photographs and information on the bell in the old market centre in Wellington, South Africa. The Old Market Building holds a bell. The Wellington Information Centre is located in the Old Market Building which dates back to 1847. The bell in the adjoining clock tower used to announce to the town's inhabitants that the day's marketing activities were about to start. Because of the very height of the bell tower it was almost impossible to read the inscriptions. The distribution of the moulding wires on the bell seems to run analogous to that on the outside church bell that stands a few meters away in the church garden. On the inscription band in between the first and second pair of moulding wires one reads
C & G MEARS FOUNDERS LONDON 1854. The bell doesn’t have further decorations
Knysna, Holy Trinity Church
Photographs and information on the Holy Trinity Church and its bell in Belvedere, Knysna. Outside Knysna, the Belvidere Manor, Holy Trinity Church is a Sophie Gray building with a bell sitting in a bell cote. Information on this church can be found in a memoir of the Reverend Alfred George Duthie of Belvidere, South Africa and of William Henry Moore Duthie of Belvidere, South Africa, edited by Annie Hart, M.A. and Robert C H Hart, B.A., Oxford University Press, 1934. In the bell-cote hangs a bell that caries as inscriptions C. & G. MEARS, FOUNDERS, LONDON PRESENTED BY FRANCIS NEWDIGATE ESQRE. 1854. Before reaching its destination the ship that carried the bell was wrecked and lay for some time under water until it was saved and hung in the turret for which it had been cast. Many years later, in 1921, the steel hinge from which the clapper is suspended was found to have corroded and broken away – probably as a result of its early immersion in salt water. The necessary repairs, which required expert knowledge, were executed by the late Mr. William McHattie through the courtesy of Messrs. Thesen & Co.
Dutch Reformed Church, Robertson (Winelands District)
Photographs and information on the bells of the Dutch Reformed Church, Robertson, South Africa. In the tower of the Robertson Dutch Reformed Church there is a set of 5 bells together with a half spherical gong. All bells have been made according to the same profile that only uses moulding wires for decoration. We therefore only include a picture of the bourdon. On the gong there is an inscription CAST BY JOHN WARNER & SONS LONDON 1905. Next to the church stands a classically made bell tower with a large bell. On the bell and in between two pairs of two moulding wires one reads the information on the founder C & G MEARS FOUNDERS LONDON 1854
Fashion Culture: Norell: Master of American Fashion
On February 14, Jeffrey Banks, co-author of "Norell: Master of American Fashion," Ellin Saltzman, former fashion director and senior vice president at firms such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s and Bergdorf Goodman, Stan Herman, designer and former president of the CFDA, and Ralph Rucci, couturier, artist and author, came together for a sparkling introduction to Norman Norell — the first American designer to employ couture techniques, refined workmanship, and luxurious fabrics — whose dresses, coats, and suits were deemed by critics to be “the equal of Paris.” This panel discussion was moderated by Patricia Mears, deputy director of MFIT
