Connectivity Challenges in E, S, C and L Optical Multi-Band Systems
Connectivity in Multi-Band networks depends on the attainable optical performance for a number of system-level parameters like number of channels, modulation format and symbol rate. We present three connectivity schemes engaging E, S, C and L bands. Exploiting a rigorous OSNIR optimisation method we tabulate their optical reach and the corresponding performance trade-offs.</p
A Dynamic Multi-Layer Resource Allocation and Optimization Framework in Application-Centric Networks
In an SDN-based network, service requests can be accommodated according to network application requirements. We devise a framework where such requirements drive IP and optical network resource allocation, dynamic optimization, and instantiation through an SDN orchestrator. The framework aims to balance the often-conflicting goals such as energy savings and resource allocation speed, while ensuring that the orchestrator can accommodate incoming service requests without interrupting the running services. We show the functionality of the framework with a simulation on a real network topology and realistic input traffic
Application aware multilayer control and optimization of elastic WDM switched optical networks
In dynamic networks with diverse application requirements, Software Defined Networking (SDN) principles enable application-aware in-operation planning. EU project ACINO built a network orchestrator as the connecting component between network applications and the underlying network infrastructure
Performance evaluation of large capacity broadcast-and-select optical crossconnects
In this work, two bufferless high capacity broadcast-and-select optical switching node architectures are presented and their performance is evaluated. The architectures are modular permitting the expansion from basic to complex structures by adding new blocks/components in a gradual way, enhancing at the same time the corresponding network functionality. The blocking performance is assessed and scheduling algorithms are proposed to solve contention for a single node. Finally, physical layer modeling is carried out in order to investigate node scalability and node cascadeability. Overall, the proposed solutions are offering modularity, transparency to switching technology, graceful evolution and high performance at an affordable cos
