The public and private faces of the friendship between Fidel Castro and Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is one of the most widely read Latin American authors in the world. His novels One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera are among many people’s favourite books. But, despite loving his books, many of his readers have found it difficult to understand his political views – especially his support and friendship for the recently deceased former president of Cuba, Fidel Castro

To Celebrate Yaşar Kemal and Gabriel Garcia Marquez
This article commemorates two late authors taking one novel by each as its subject matter. The first author is Yaşar Kemal, whose Ortadirek relates the seasonal migration of peasants towards Çukurova. The second author is Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Colombian Nobel laureate’s A Hundred Years of Solitude narrates the tale of a Latin American village from its inception to its definitive drift in time and space. Kemal criticizes the joint exploitation of peasants’ labour by their feudal village leader and landed gentry through a family’s miserable story. Similarly, Marquez bases his criticism of the colonial abuse of his country on a family’s tragic tale. Both authors resort to fantastic elements to denounce social and economic corruption. Ortadirek’s chronologic map covers the 1950s while the other novel’s reference to time is indeterminate. This makes the Marquez’s book a challenging read. </div
GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ AND THE GREAT COLOMBIA
Half a century has passed since Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel “One Hundred
years of Solitude” was published and became famous around the world.
The author of the novel, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, remains the titan of
Colombian literature.
He was born in the town Aracataca, department of Magdalena, Colombia.
Garcia Marquez wrote most of his publications about Colombia, despite living
most of his time in Mexico and Europe. He began as a journalist in the 1950s.
He also worked as a foreign correspondent. After many years criticizing the
public affairs and the Colombian government, he was forced into exile. In
these pages I examine his childhood and the influences that his family members
in Aracataca had on him.
As a journalist he had the quality of deep observation of everyday life. In his
writings he mixed myths, dreams and reality. He invented the magic realism
genre according to the critics.
In 2012, Garcia Marquez’ brother revealed that the novelist was sick and diagnosed
with dementia. He died in 2014 of pneumonia in Mexico.
If one is looking for a good understanding of Garcia’s world, then it is not a bad
idea to go to Cartagena and visit the famous isolated colonial town of Mompox
*Mompos* a modern-day Macondo that will lead the reader to the spirit of the
novel and the world of the author.
I examine Santa Marta city, Mompos, and other places that Garcia loved. The
scheme of his work as it appears in “One Hundred years of Solitude” and the
main characters, reflect to some degree the very history of Colombia and the
idiosyncrasies of its people.departmental bulletin pape

Tailored synthesis of nanostructured WC/a-C coatings by dual magnetron sputtering
Nanostructured coatings with variable contents of tungsten carbide (WC) and amorphous carbon (a-C) are prepared by controlling the sputtering power ratio using WC and graphite targets. XRD and TEM/ED analysis shows that increasing the C incorporation, the WC nanocrystalline phases evolve from γ-W2C to β-WC1.x. Further C enrichment leads to a nanocomposite structure of small WC1-x crystals dispersed in a-C matrix. The a-C at.% is estimated by XPS analysis and correlated with the observed tribo-mechanical properties. The hardness and friction properties vary from hard/high friction (36-40GPa; μ=0.6-0.8) to moderate-hard/low friction (16-20GPa; μ~0.2) coatings depending on the film composition. The transition point is found for a-C content of 10at.%. This correlates with a change from nanocrystalline WC to nanocomposite WC1-x/a-C coatings. The overall study will help to understand the previous literature data and will serve as guide for a tailored synthesis of these WC/a-C nanocomposites
