    Tectonometamorphic discontinuities within the Greater Himalayan Sequence in Western Nepal (Central Himalaya) : Insights on the exhumation of crystalline rocks.

    The core of the Greater Himalayan Sequence in the Mugu-Karnali area (Western Nepal) is affected by a thick shear zone with development of nearly 4 km of mylonites (Mangri shear zone). It is a contractional shear zone showing a top-to-the-SW and WSW sense of shear. The shear zone developed during the decompression, in the sillimanite stability field, of rocks that previously underwent relatively high-pressure metamorphism deformed under the kyanite stability field. P–T conditions indicate that the footwall experienced higher pressure (1.0–0.9 GPa) than the hanging wall (0.7 GPa) and similar temperatures (675°–700 °C). U–Pb in-situ dating of monazites indicate a continuous activity of the shear zone between 25 and 18 Ma. Samples from the lower part of the Greater Himalayan Sequence underwent similar ductile shearing at ~17–13 Ma. These ages and the associated P–T–t paths revealed that peak metamorphic conditions were reached ~5–7 Ma later in the footwall of the shear zone with respect to the hanging-wall pointing to a diachroneity in the metamorphism triggered by the shear zone itself. Mangri Shear Zone, with the other recently documented tectonic and metamorphic discontinuities within the Greater Himalayan Sequence, point to the occurrence of a regional tectonic feature, the High Himalayan Discontinuity, running for more than 500 km along the strike of the Central Himalayas. It was responsible of the exhumation of the upper part of the Greater Himalayan Sequence starting from 28 Ma, well before the activation of the Main Central Thrust and the South Tibetan Detachment. Our data point out that exhumation of the Greater Himalayan Sequence was partitioned in space and time and different slices were exhumed in different times, starting from the older in the upper part to the younger in the lower one

    Car crashes: The effect of passenger presence and other factors on driver outcome.

    This study was conducted to evaluate whether the presence of passengers affects the consequences, for drivers, of road crashes, also taking into account other factors associated with driver outcome following a crash. Data on car drivers involved in accidents occurring in 2004 and 2005 in the Italian province of Pavia were analysed. The data came from the Pavia office of the Italian Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority and are based on police accident reports. Logistic regression analyses were performed. Injury risk in drivers under 25 years of age increased in the presence of a passenger. This effect was not found in drivers aged 25 years and older. In single-vehicle accidents, passenger presence was found to exert a negative effect among the young drivers, but a positive one among the adult drivers. Crash outcome for young drivers is more likely to be severe when the passenger is male. This study confirmed the existence of other risk factors influencing the severity of crashes for drivers: gender, penalty points, possession of other driving licences in addition to the basic car one, time and day of the week on which the crash occurred, dynamics and place of the crash. These results underline the importance of evaluating passenger presence as a factor influencing crash outcome. Further studies assessing the influence of passengers on the risk of occurrence of crashes, and also considering the impact of crashes on passengers and other road users, would improve our understanding of this topic

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Miocene andalusite leucogranite in Central-East Himalaya (Everest-Masang Kang area): low-pressure melting during heating.

    The studied Miocene andalusite-bearing leucogranites intrude the upper part of the High Himalayan Crystallines (HHC) and the north Himalayan domes and outcrop in an area stretching from Mt. Everest to the Kula Khangri massif (Bhutan) towards the east. The leucogranites constitute both dykes as well as sills and parts of larger andalusite-free leucogranite plutons (e.g., Makalu). They represent mainly of two-mica muscovite+biotite± tourmaline±cordierite±andalusite±sillimanite±dumortierite) leucogranite, and tourmaline muscovite+tourmaline±biotite± andalusite±sillimanite±garnet± kyanite±spinel±corundum) leucogranites. Microstructures reveal several generations of andalusite (from residual/peritectic early magmatic to cotectic late magmatic), even in the same sample. The occurrence of residual and/or peritectic andalusite, together with inclusions of sillimanite+biotite in cordierite, indicates that melts formed by dehydration melting of biotite at T=660–700 °C during prograde heating at low-pressure conditions (Pbabout 400 MPa). According to current models, leucogranites are produced by dehydration melting of muscovite and/or biotite during exhumation of the HHC. In this case, micas are consumed in the sillimanite stability field. As a consequence, these models cannot explain the occurrence of residual and/or peritectic magmatic andalusite. Conditions for anatexis in the andalusite field may have been achieved by heat transfer within the exhuming (extruding) HHC, from structurally lower and hotter rocks towards upper and colder fertile lithologies
