Design of microcavity resonators for single-atom detection
Whispering gallery modes of a microdisk resonator are useful for the optical detection of single rubidium and cesium atoms near the surface of a substrate. Light is coupled into two high-Q whispering-gallery modes of the disk which can provide attractive and/or repulsive potentials, respectively, via their evanescent fields. The sum potential, including van der Waals/Casimir-Polder surface forces, may be tuned to exhibit a minimum at distances on the order of 100nm from the disk surface. Simultaneously optically trapping and detecting is possible, with the back-action of an atom held in this trap on the light fields being sufficiently strong to provide a measurable effect. Atom trapping and detection depend on a variety of system parameters and experimental realizations differ for different atoms

INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY OF PHYSISORBED MOLECULES ON ALKALI HALIDE SURFACES
Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Indiana UniversityVaporization of alkali halides has been used to produce high surface area films which are transparent in the Small molecules adsorbed on such surfaces in sub-monolayer coverages have been studied by infrared spectroscopy to characterize surface-adsorbate and/or adsorbate-adsorbate . We have observed coverage-dependent absorptions due to CO on 77K NaCl films, with features attributed to multiple sites at the surface. Other adsorbed molecules studied in our laboratory will also be discussed. 1. M. Folman and Y. Kozirovski, J. Coll. Interf. Sci 38, 51 (1972) and reference contained therein. 2. J. Heidberg, S. Figures of Memory : "Anne Frank’s diary" between text and image, word and symbol
Assmann 1988, S. 12).Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Interpretation by Ari Folman and David Polonsky (2017) is a recent addition to a sequence of editions that have shaped the perception of Anne Frank’s story. At the same time, the ethics and aesthetics of remembrance have been consistently discussed. These discussions have been fueled by discourses on memory as well as by the reimagination of the past by new generations. As Marianne Hirsch states »Postmemory’s connection to the past is [...] actually mediated not by recall but by imaginative investment, projection, and creation« (Hirsch 2012). Ari Folman and David Polonsky work with those imaginative approaches and reshape historical events on the visual and the verbal narrative levels. As with Waltz with Bashir (2009), on which Folman and Polonsky collaborated successfully as author and illustrator, Anne Frank’s Diary is also an extraordinary testimony of war based on extensive research. Intermedial references, such as historical photographs, documentaries and journal entries add authenticity to Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Interpretation and lead the reader on a journey back in time. This article discusses the relationship between the visual representation of memory in the Diary and how it goes about narrating the story, and it examines this graphic novel’s potential for shaping and reshaping the reader’s perception of history
INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY AND PHOTOCHEMISTRY ON SALT FIIMS

Ewing, Sur, Sci, 185, 15 (1987).Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Indiana UniversitySublimation as alkali metal halides in vacuo produces well-defined crystals of colloidal scale. Such films have high specific surface areas and are transparent from the infrared through the ultraviolet. Thus they are useful as substrates for the spectroscopic study of adsorbed . We are currently exploring the photochemical behavior of small molecules adsorbed on sodium chloride. Sub-monolayer coverages of carbon monoxide, when irradiated with ultraviolet light, produce carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide cation; in the presence of sulfur, carbonyl sulfide is formed. We will discuss the role of the substrate in these reactions, and evaluate sodium chloride as a medium for modifying and trapping surface reactants. We will also make analogies between salt film and matrix isolation spectroscopy for the study in small molecule photochemistry
„Jeśli to halucynacja, to nader, nader realistyczna”. „Era wolnego wyboru” w „Kongresie” (2013) Ariego Folmana i jej związki z wizją przyszłości z „Kongresu futurologicznego” (1970) Stanisława Lema
The article discusses the relations beteen The Congress (2013) by Ari Folman and its literary original, Futurological Congress (1970) by Stanislaw Lem. It studies the relationship between a film “era of free choice” and a vision of the future that is present in the story of the Polish author. In the following interpretation a utopian future world presented in The Congress is not only connected with the development of cinematography (as it was presented in Folman’s works), but also with a heyday of the latest type of media: Facebook, Second Life, the systems of a total involvement/immersion of the senses. The author indicates the connections of an animated land of the future presented in the film with a concept of the precession of simulacra by Jean Baudrillard. The argument leads to the conclusion carrying multiple meanings and the reality of the vision of tomorrow presented in Futurological Congress

Methylovirgula ligni gen. nov., sp. nov., an obligately acidophilic, facultatively methylotrophic bacterium with a highly divergent mxaF gene
Two strains of Gram-negative, aerobic, non-pigmented, non-motile, rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from beech wood blocks during decay by the white-rot fungus Hypholoma fasciculare (Folman et al., 2008) and were designated strains BW863T and BW872. They are capable of methylotrophic growth and assimilate carbon via the ribulose-bisphosphate pathway. In addition to methanol, the novel isolates utilized ethanol, pyruvate and malate. Strains BW863T and BW872 are obligately acidophilic, mesophilic organisms capable of growth at pH values between 3.1 and 6.5 (with an optimum at pH 4.5-5.0) and at temperatures between 4 and 30 °C. Phospholipid fatty acid profiles of these bacteria contain unusually high amounts (about 90%) of 18:17c fatty acid, thereby resembling the profiles of Methylobacterium strains. The predominant quinone is Q-10. The DNA G+C content of novel isolates is 61.8-62.8 mol %. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence identity, strains BW863T and BW872 are most closely related to the acidophilic methanotroph Methylocapsa acidiphila B2 (96.5-97 %). Comparative sequence analysis of mxaF, the gene encoding the large subunit of methanol dehydrogenase, placed the MxaF sequences of two novel strains in a cluster that is distinct from all previously described MxaF sequences of cultivated methylotrophs. The identity values between the MxaF sequences of the acidophilic isolates and the MxaF sequences from known alpha-, beta- and gammaproteobacterial methylotrophs comprised 69-75%, 61-63% and 64-67%, respectively. The data therefore suggest that strains BW863T and BW872 represent a novel genus and species of methylotrophic bacteria; the name Methylovirgula ligni gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed, with strain BW863T (=DSM 19998T = NCIMB 14408T) as the type strain.
The incorporation of alkali-treated straw in fattening rations for male cattle
ABSTRACTThe fattening process of male cattle was divided into three weight stages: 150 to 250kg, 250 to 400kg, 400 to 490kg. Seventy animals were fed either a control (C) diet containing 10·3 MJ/kg metabolizable energy and some hay, or an experimental (E) diet containing 8 4 MJ/kg, in which NaOH-treated wheat straw (450g/kg) and long straw (50 g/kg) were incorporated. The diets were given during the three weight stages to five treatment groups as follows: 1. C-C-C. 2. E-E-E. 3. C-E-E, 4. C-E-C, and 5. E-E-C. The average daily gain and metabolizable energy conversion ratios were: 1344, 980, 1127, 1145, 1094g/day and 71·4, 90·6, 77·3, 73·7, 79·8 MJ/kg live weight, respectively. The saving of concentrates plus hay in groups 2 to 5 compared with group 1 was 1·33, 1·65, 0·84 and 0·91 kg/kg live weight respectively, and the concentrates plus hay by straw replacement ratio was 3·80, 2·12, 2·00 and 3·06, respectively. Dressing percentage and percentage of fat in the large depots of the animals in groups 1 to 5 were 57·2, 58·7, 58·3, 57·8, 57·9 and 3·88, 2·28, 2·52, 3·42, 2·81, respectively. The results suggest that it is not economical to feed the E-diet to animals before they reach a weight of 250 kg, and that termination of the feeding process by a highly concentrated diet is not advantageous.</jats:p
