No full textThe temperature-conditional mutant tsA58 of SV40 large T antigen (Tag) increases the proliferation rate and the number of cell divisions in primary murine and human myogenic cells when expressed under permissive conditions (i.e., at 33 degrees C in medium containing high levels of serum), Under these conditions, Tag also prevents terminal differentiation, Under nonpermissive conditions (i.e., at 39 degrees C in medium containing low levels of serum) in which Tag is largely inactive, proliferation is arrested, and differentiation occurs, However, even at a permissive temperature, the removal of serum induced myosin expression and the fusion of myogenic cells, which continued to express functional Tag, Although Tag was complexed with pRb, as expected from a functional protein, proliferation was nevertheless arrested, and differentiation was induced, Consistent with these findings, the exposure of Tag-expressing differentiated myotubes to serum at 33 degrees C did not reinduce DNA synthesis in these cells, Thus, in myogenic cells, temperature-conditional mutants of Tag stimulate proliferation in the presence of serum but neither prevent terminal differentiation in the absence of serum nor induce DNA synthesis once complete withdrawal from the cycle has occurred

No full textThe article centres around two motives of a person, fieri and esse, meaning an anthropologicaland moral one. Referring widely to Person and Act by Karol Wojtyła andhis concept of participation, the author strongly develops new perspectives of individualand social responsibility. In terms of the latter, he particularly concentrates on responsibilitywhen it comes to marital and family life.Starting from a critical look at partial anthropologies (that is, fragmentary anthropologies,anthropologies in idée-fixe, anthropologies included in utopias of the 21st centuryor anthropologies “medially profiled”), the author points out the necessity ofdeveloping an integral anthropology. Only in its frames can one talk about differenttypes of human responsibility (also in marriage and family).The third part of the publication concentrates on presenting “various ideas to makea family”. To be more specific, this is a Freudian idea with the “pleasure principle” —Lustprinzip, known from the philosophy of processes inspired by Jacob Rousseau’s messageand his vision of self-salvation. Apart from that, the article discusses post-Marxistvisions of subordinating the family to the so-called pluralistic society (this is theso-called chaoism idea).The main part of the discussion, however, constitutes a proposal of a personalisticvision of responsibility ingrained in marital and family love. It is also connected withthe need to present new cultural contexts for living in a responsible love.The human fieri constitutes a revelation of a creative role of a personal participation.An intersubjective bond within which an interpersonal and bilateral communicationof spouses takes place, is considered to be an indispensable condition of happinessin marriage and family
Mediterranean Migrations: Regionalism versus Globalization
No full textThis paper challenges the claim of globalisation as a cause of immigration into Southern Europe and, on an empirical basis, identifies regionalisation as being the primary issue, along with networked migratory patterns. However, the changing patterns of immigration do present challenges to both state and society. It is argued here that recent policy responses in Portugal, Italy and Spain have been inconsistent and irrational – reflecting more the ‘securitisation’ of migration than European reality. Earlier policy innovations are identified, by country and date: most of these have now been abandoned. It is suggested that all of Southern Europe has converged onto a statist, restrictionist model of immigration control that was formerly held only by Greece. The principal characteristics of this model are outlined, along with a migration flowchart and indicative data for migrant flows and sub-flows in Italy and Spain. In the final section, I try to show that the needs of the economy cannot be predicted, immigration cannot be controlled in the manner currently being enforced across Southern Europe, and attempts to do so will damage rather than improve economic productivity and growth. The concept of an accommodating immigration policy is advanced, whereby the state tries to manage the needs of both employers and potential migrants. Six guidelines for policy development are suggested – most of which have already been successfully carried out in the European Union. These are the following: migration in order to find a job; circular cross-border migration; EU level negotiation of readmission agreements; the need for a variety of migration-for-employment schemes; legal residence should not depend upon continuity of employment; and discreet legalisation will still be needed in Southern Europe

No full textThe paper publishes and analyses as-yet-unpublished documents concerning an anthology on memory in literature, assembled by Gesualdo Bufalino and held in the archive of the Comiso Foundation.
The unpublished anthology is accompanied by a letter to Elvira Sellerio, in which Bufalino explains its structure and choices, and by a series of eccentric texts that all revolve around the theme of memory. The drafts and the preparatory cartoons for the anthology in fieri alternate with textual fragments later included into the works of invention, lists of words, aphorisms, autonomous and complete texts (and among these a review as-yet-unpublished of the novel La palazzina di villeggiatura of Enrico Job)

No full textLa condizione di isolamento fisico e di distanziamento sociale introdotta dai governi per limitare la diffusione dell'infezione virale ha messo in scacco le consuete forme d'uso dello spazio in città e nei territori e, come conseguenza, ha ridato centralità al tempo. Soprattutto in ambito urbano e sociale, se lo spazio ha aggiunto restrizioni contingenti (ragioni sanitarie vietano l’uso di luoghi della socialità in presenza) alle sue restrizioni costitutive (un'aula cosi come un vagone non si possono dilatare a piacimento e con facilità), il tempo sembra aver mostrato la sua duttilità. Mentre gli spostamenti si sono annullati o ridotti e i confini fisici sono divenuti invalicabili o controllati, agenda e calendario hanno preso il sopravvento e la prossimità è diventata elettronica e glocale. Così il qui e ora si sono spezzati. La logica dell'appuntamento, dove e quando, propria della nostra corporeità sempre sembrata indispensabile (dalla scuola alle riunioni, dal lavoro all'acquisto) è venuta meno. Insomma, avendo perso l’uso in libertà dello spazio (e delle relazioni sociali in presenza), nel momento della costrizione totale o parziale alle nostre case non ci è restato che il tempo su cui agire. Abbiamo così vissuto, come singoli individui, momenti di un tempo vuoto e privo di impegni (soprattutto per alcune categorie sociali) o, all'opposto, una totale colonizzazione del nostro tempo privato, in un infittirsi dell'agenda di incontri virtuali, continui, soli in una stanza ma iper-connessi. Prima di un “liberi tutti”, di un ritorno alla circolazione ubiqua e globale, dovremo abituarci ad una diluizione delle nostre presenze fisiche nei luoghi ad uso collettivo, che il distanziamento sociale richiede. Tale diluizione potrà avvenire nello spazio (com-presenti ma distanti) ma anche nel tempo, se lo si vuol gestire e governare (pochi presenti e in momenti diversi). Forse emergenza e post-emergenza virus – quando i sacrifici son tollerati e la pazienza è generosa, perché breve – ci sono utili per valutare se sia possibile agire progettualmente non solo sul tempo (sociale) ma, insieme, sullo spazio e sul tempo
