The new partnership: the changing relationship between state and the third sector in the scenario of new social policies in Italy
The second half of the 1980s and the 1990s will be remembered in Italy as the period in which privatization assumed increasingly significant proportions as the dominant political strategy in the field of welfare policies (Pasquinelli, 1993). The move towards privatization has been drastic and generalized. It has radically reversed the tendency to extend government intervention that had characterized the growth of the Italian welfare system since the end of the World War II. Until the 1970s, politicians had not only acquiesced to the expansion of welfare spending but had encouraged it. Nevertheless, during the last decade the worsening of fiscal problems and growing political instability (the result of scandals caused by investigations into political corruption) weakened the social consensus surrounding the welfare state and gave room to proposals for radical change (Borzaga et al., 1996)
Kinetic and thermodynamic analysis of leech-derived tryptase inhibitor interaction with bovine tryptase and bovine trypsin
The interaction of leech-derived tryptase inhibitor (LDTI) with bovine liver capsule tryptase (BLCT) and bovine trypsin has been studied using both thermodynamic and kinetic approaches. Several differences were detected: (i) the equilibrium affinity of LDTI for BLCT (K-a = 8.9 x 10(5) M-1) is about 600-fold lower than that for bovine trypsin (K-a = 5.1 x 10(8) M-1); (ii) LDTI behaves as a purely non-competitive inhibitor of BLCT, while it is a purely competitive inhibitor of bovine trypsin. These functional data are compared with those previously reported for the LDTI binding to human tryptase, where tight inhibition occurs at two of the four active sites of the tetramer (K-a = 7.1 x 10(8) M-1). Amino acid sequence alignment of BLCT, human beta II-tryptase and bovine trypsin allows us to infer some possible structural basis for the observed functional differences
Bilateral switching of the modulated electrooptic contrast in PLZTN ceramics RID C-3109-2009
Spatial distribution of ferroelectric polarization in Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 ceramics doped with lanthanum and niobium has been investigated using scanning electrooptic confocal microscopy. Measurement of the modulated electrooptic signal in presence of a sinusoidal electric field reveals ferroelectric domains at microscopic scale not accessible to conventional polarized optical imaging. Both electrooptic images and local electrooptic loops have been observed after applying a bias electric field to the ceramic samples, being initially non-ferroelectric macroscopically. Bilateral reversal of the electrooptic contrast during the poling cycle has been detected and explained taking into account non-180 degrees switching processes in ferroelectric grains of arbitrary orientation.
This article investigates the «occupational welfare» that concerns welfare provision resulted of bargaining between social partners, or voluntary and unilateral initiatives by companies. The article firstly aims to analyze the main features of the Italian occupational welfare. The focus is on the protection of both «old» and «new» social risk. As regards «old risks», we consider the case of supplementary funds in pension and health care. As regards «new risks», we consider re-conciliation and vocational training. The second aim of this work is to analyze the relationship between occupational and public welfare. In particular, the purpose is to better understand whether occupational welfare promotes the correction of the three typical distortions of Italian welfare model (territorial, functional, distributive) or, on the contrary, occupational welfare schemes reinforce such distortions. The analysis point out that the occupational welfare is able to promote a «functional» recalibration, but it achieves more limited results if we consider both the «territorial» and «distributional» recalibration
