Independent association of hypovitaminosis d with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in people with chronic spinal cord injury: a cross-sectional study
PurposeNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and hypovitaminosis D are highly prevalent in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and could exert an unfavorable influence on cardiovascular profile and rehabilitation outcomes. We aimed to assess the independent association between low 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and NAFLD in people with chronic (> 1 year) SCI.MethodsOne hundred seventy-three consecutive patients with chronic SCI (132 men and 41 women) admitted to a rehabilitation program underwent clinical/biochemical evaluations and liver ultrasonography.ResultsNAFLD was found in 105 patients (60.7% of the study population). They were significantly older and exhibited a poorer leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and functional independence in activities of daily living, a greater number of comorbidities and a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its correlates, including lower HDL and higher values of body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure, HOMA-index of insulin resistance and triglycerides. 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in NAFLD (median: 10.6 ng/ml, range: 2.0-31.0) than in non-NAFLD group (22.5 ng/ml, 4.2-51.6). When all these variables were included in a multiple logistic regression analysis, a significant independent association with NAFLD only persisted for lower 25(OH)D levels, a greater number of comorbidities and a poorer LTPA. The ROC analysis revealed that 25(OH)D levels < 18.25 ng/ml discriminated patients with NAFLD with a sensitivity of 89.0% and a specificity of 73.0% (AUC: 85.7%; 95%CI: 79.6-91.7%). NAFLD was exhibited by 83.9% of patients with 25(OH)D levels < 18.25 ng/ml and by 18% of those with 25(OH)D levels >= 18.25 ng/ml (p < 0.0001).ConclusionIn people with chronic SCI, 25(OH)D levels < 18.25 ng/ml may represent a marker of NAFLD independent of MetS-related features. Further studies are warranted to define the cause-effect relationships of this association
R&D endowments at home driving R&D internationalisation: Evidence from the Italian business R&D survey
This study aims at unpacking the internal R&D determinants spurring a firm to invest in R&D abroad, that is owning R&D performing affiliates abroad. Differently from previous literature – mainly focusing on country level determinants as well as on motivations for the location choice of foreign R&D – we make a shift in the observation point. In particular, we dig deeper into the characteristics of firms' intra-mural R&D and the different types of R&D outsourcing to assess their association with R&D internationalisation. On the one hand, we account for the different types of R&D employees (share of researchers and technicians on R&D employees) and R&D performance (basic versus applied research; R&D performed in laboratories rather than in production facilities); on the other hand, we focus on a specific type of R&D outsourcing (to non-affiliated foreign partners, that is the “contract offshoring R&D”). The analysis is performed on an unbalanced panel of 33,476 observations referring to all Italian R&D performers over the 2003–2010 period. Our findings reveal that a more structured organisation of R&D at home (e.g. performing R&D in dedicated laboratories) and the propensity to outsource R&D to foreign non-affiliated partners are associated with a higher share of R&D internationalisation

50+ years of R&D Management: a retrospective synthesis and new research trajectories
In 2020, R&D Management celebrated 50 years of publication. The present study honors that milestone by conducting a retrospective examination of the research conducted in the journal over time and reflects on its rich history to look forward in the R&D management field. Using bibliometric techniques, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the journal’s most prominent topics and themes, as well as its most prolific authors, institutions, and countries.
The findings indicate that R&D Management has increased its productivity and reputation as measured by the number of published articles and citations per year and expanded its
international reach from the initial European-dominated
author base. We complement this analysis by performing an in-depth systematic literature review of the most frequently cited
papers –annually and of all time –to disentangle the themes and concepts that prominently shaped the progress of the discipline itself. The results suggest that R&D Management has
progressively widened its field of investigation from an intra-organizational perspective (1970–1992) to an inter-organizational
view (1992–2006) and then to an extra-organizational outlook (2006–2018).
Finally, based on this history and viewing the contributions from 2019 onwards, we identify an emerging set of research trajectories that we expect will pave the way for the future impact of R&D Management and the field at large
Past scholarship on Corinthian vase-painting of the Archaic period has long overlooked Akragas, since the body of evidence from the settlement was relatively scanty or not well known. The recent and remarkable investigations around temple D and in the residential area provide an opportunity to bridge this gap. Therefore, this paper deals with Corinthian figured pottery excavated from Akragas at large, that is from the sanctuaries, residential areas and cemeteries. Based on a stylistic and contextual approach, this study offers an updated and comprehensive overview of both published and unpublished Corinthian pottery imported to Akragas. It deals with the following aspects: a) nature and peculiarities of Corinthian imports in the Mediterranean and local contexts; b) their distribution within the city; c) relationship with specific painters and/or workshops; d) the absolute chronology of Corinthian pottery style
