Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. No full textLa modernità architettonica, intesa come periodo inaugurato dalla stesura della Carta di Atene, ha visto la realizzazione copiosa di insediamenti residenziali, aggregati abitativi che seguivano e interpretavano i dettami del moderno. Imbastardendosi, mediando con le istanze linguistiche, morfologiche e sociali dei differenti luoghi nei quali la costruzione di queste parti di città avvenivano, questa stagione ha generato una eredità importante. È utile riconoscerla, più che con lo stigma del fallimento, col carattere dell’incompiutezza: come segnalato da Abera, il progetto del Moderno è un progetto incompiuto, che riserva valore e significato. Il patrimonio da riconoscere come tale è dunque quel Moderno costruito che ha edificato in larga parte quei brani di città riferiti ai programmi di costruzione pubblica, l’edilizia sociale che ha edificato le parti in estensione, i luoghi di margine e liminari delle città.
Affermare il valore di questa eredità porta al riconoscimento delle sue potenzialità, che, se messe in atto, sono in grado di compiere il progetto interrotto della modernità. Seguendo la riflessione di Agamben sulla potenza del pensiero, che a sua volta rilegge la condizione aristotelica di potenza come hexis della steresis, l’abito della privazione, questo patrimonio va riconosciuto nelle sue qualità inespresse, da considerare come un punto di partenza per una riforma, un miglioramento profondo ma possibile della città pubblica.
Il lavoro di ricerca prova a definire un quadro approfondito dei casi di studio, riconducendoli a categorie specifiche e generalizzabili, costruendo un rapporto di continuità fra i progetti ed in grado di riconoscerne i principi che ne ordinano la forma e gli spazi.
All’interno di queste tre categorie – che affrontano, rispettivamente, la dimensione morfologica urbana, la dimensione aggregativa e la dimensione del tipo abitativo – si interpretano le differenze non solo scalari, ma altresì di pensiero e di teorizzazione rispetto alle possibili azioni di riforma.
Alla fase di riconoscimento delle operazioni di progetto volte alla costruzione di una nuova forma urbana, di un nuovo ordine aggregativo e di nuove possibilità tipologiche, la ricerca affianca l’affondo sui processi di committenza e i modelli di gestione delle operazioni di trasformazione, attraverso una considerazione dei progetti che guarda alla generalizzazione dei principi teorici e alla comprensione delle sfere attuative di questi interventi.
Alla ricerca segue un capitolo interlocutorio, che prova a discutere un quadro di pensiero attraverso il dialogo con gli autori, ragionando sulle teorie e sulle prassi circa la trasformazione della forma della città. In ultimo la tesi, connotata dal carattere innovativo e industriale, si avvale di una sperimentazione progettuale: attraverso la collaborazione con gli enti di ricerca e le amministrazioni, il lavoro vuole offrire un modello di riforma attuabile anche in ambito locale, non solo occupandosi dei modelli attuativi e delle tipologie di gestione, ma riconoscendo la necessità di operare tramite i principi del progetto di riconfigurazione della forma urbana, offrendo una sperimentazione che reinterpreta la forma degli aggregati insediativi pubblici della Città Metropolitana di Bari.Architectural Modernity, meant as the period which followed the Charter of Athens, saw the realization of large housing estates, residential ensemble which followed and interpreted the modern ideals. That period has produced an important heritage, mediating the linguistic, the social and the morphological natures of the diverse places in which those parts of the city took place.
Rather than with the stigma of failure, it is useful to recognize it with the character of incompleteness: as pointed out by Habermas, the project of the Modern is an unfinished one, reserving value and meaning. The heritage to be recognized as such is therefore that “built modern” that has largely realized those parts of the city referring to public programmes, that social housing which has built the parts in extension, the marginal and liminal places of the cities.
Affirming this legacy leads to the recognition of its potential, which, if put into action, is able to carry out the interrupted project of modernity. Following Agamben's reflection on the power of thought, which in turn reinterprets the Aristotelian condition of power as the hexis of a steresis, the habit of deprivation, this heritage must be recognized in its unspoken qualities, to be considered as a starting point for a reform, a profound but possible improvement of the public city.
The research work tries to define an in-depth framework of the case studies, tracing them back to specific and generalizable categories, building a relationship of continuity between the projects and able to recognize the principles that order their shape and spaces.
Within these three categories – which respectively deal with the urban morphological dimension, the aggregative dimension and the dimension of the housing type – the differences are interpreted, not only the scalar ones, but also the variety of thought and theorization of possible reform actions.
In addition to the phase of recognition of project operations aimed at the construction of a new urban form, of a new aggregative order and of new typological possibilities, the research brings the focus on administrative processes and management models of transformation operations, through an analysis which looks at the generalization of theoretical principles and at the understanding of the spheres of implementation of these interventions.
The research is followed by an interlocutory chapter, which tries to discuss a framework of thought through dialogue with the authors, reflecting on the theories and practices regarding the transformation of the shape of the city. Lastly the thesis, characterized by an innovative and industrial character, takes advantage of a design experimenta: through the collaboration with research bodies and administrations, the work aims to offer a model that can also be brought to the local areas, dealing not exclusively with the implementation models and the types of management, but recognizing the need to operate through the principles of the reconfiguration project of the urban form, offering an experimentation that reinterprets the form of the public settlement aggregates of the Metropolitan City of Bari

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
