Buzzoni offers a number of examples from textual traditions that illustrate the principles of recensio (the establishment of the stemma and the classification of witnesses and readings), emendatio (the selection and emendation of readings), and dispositio (the final stage of laying out the edited text, apparatuses, and other material). No full textA brief lexicon of stemmatology
The Parvum lexicon stemmatologicum (PLS) is a scholarly digital resource providing explanations for technical terms related to stemmatology, a discipline of classical and mediaeval philology aiming at understanding the historical evolution of textual traditions. The PLS was initiated, within the framework of the Studia Stemmatologica research network, by Odd Einar Haugen, who was its editor-in-chief until May 15, 2015.
The necessity of creating such a digital resource becomes evident if one realises that stemmatology is by nature an interdisciplinary discipline, using concepts and methods from a variety of different fields: linguistics, codicology, palaeography, book history, etc. In addition, stemmatology is at the same time an old discipline (dating back from the first half of the nineteenth century in its modern form and from the Hellenistic period in its most ancient attestations) and a discipline that has recently undertaken a methodological revolution, not only because of the digital turn in the humanities, but perhaps more importantly because of the influence of phylogenetics. The PLS attempts to address the challenge of integrating old and new concepts, and besides includes the presentation of methods and tools used in stemmatology and sometimes borrowed from other disciplines, such as computer science, mathematics or biology.
Moreover, as any other venerable discipline of the humanities, stemmatology has developed according to more or less national schools or traditions, in which the same concepts are not always used in exactly the same way. The PLS tries to address this linguistic aspect by providing equivalents of the terms in French, German, Italian, and – where appropriate – Latin.
The list of editors and contributors to the PLS reflects the multidisciplinary and multicultural dimensions of this collective scholarly endeavour. In the last weeks before the release of this version 1.0 (Nov. 13, 2015), much of the work of reviewing this very complex dictionary has been taken up by Marina Buzzoni, Aidan Conti, Odd Einar Haugen, in addition to the two present editors.
The lexicon is certainly not yet perfect, the length and depth of entries varies and there may even be contradictions left here and there, but we agreed that its present state is good enough as a first online version (also available as pdf and html downloads for off-line use). We are working on ideas to turn this resource into a second, completely revised version as a book publication. Beyond the borders: (in)stability of group dynamics and culture planning
No full textOver the past few years, group dynamics have received considerable attention within different theoretical frameworks, namely social science disciplines such as psychology, biology, anthropology and economics, as well as cultural studies. Recent studies in social psychology have shown that the notion of «entitativity» – i.e. «the perceived unity» rather than the group’s actual unity – is central for describing and understanding group dynamics. These same
studies have also revealed that «in-group entitativity» is associated with a higher level of identification, attribution of intentionality, and perceived security provided by the group itself. From the point of view of cultural studies, a question arises as to the possible role and contribution of cultural products – not only written texts of different kinds, but also figurative artworks – towards increasing in-group entitativity. In this paper the author argues that «culture planning», particularly by transforming «non-structured inventories
into structured repertoires» (Even-Zohar), turns out to be a «perceptual cue» of in-group entitativity. The outcomes of this research will cast new light on the cultural products themselves, allowing for an in-depth revisitation of traditional
interpretations

Sulle riscritture intersemiotiche: Beowulf al cinema e a teatro
No full textFollowing Even-Zohar’s (1979ff.) theoretical framework, particularly as regards his theory of ‘transfer’ (i.e. a text which was created in a cultural system A is re-created in a cultural system B), this essay analyses some modern cinematic and theatrical adaptations of the Old English epic poem Beowulf. Even-Zohar’s theory of transfer has been seldom used in previous research dealing with intersemiotic translation, some notable exceptions being Cattrysse (1992), Remael (2000), and Weissbrod (2004), (2006). After discussing the peculiarities of the processes of transfer applied to medieval works, the reasons why Beowulf can still nowadays play the role of an imported good and, through its rewrites, is integrated into the home repertoire of a contemporary cultural polysystem will be discussed, along with the consequences generated by this integration. Furthermore, the network of relations between the state of the home system, the nature of the transference activity, and the relations between power and market with respect to the ideological component of the process of tranfer will be taken into consideration. To this end, the notions of ‘capital’ elaborated by Bourdieu (1980), as well as that of ‘norm’ put forth by Toury ([1978] 1995) will be used. The results achieved in this study are in line with the claim that peculiar processes affecting specific form of intersemiotic translation can be detected only within the framework of a general theory of transfer
