Kenneth Button, Disruption in the British bus services How have the intercity and city bus services changed since the 1980 and 1985 laws ? The lowering of fares because of competition, noticeable in the first years, has not been maintained. The stock has been improved the traffic increased, but increased competitiveness is being impeded by past history. The importance of former colonial patterns in Africa on the market for airline services

    No full text
This paper focuses on trends in the geographical distribution of air transportation growth in Africa paying particular attention to the overhanging legacy effects of the historical economic-political structures of the continent on emerging patterns of airline development. In particular, we examine the role of the colonial pasts on clusters of air movements between African countries from 1997 to 2011. Of particular interest is whether the patterns of air service supply have changed over this period, and, if so, whether there has been a movement away from any linkages that may have existed between the old colonial blocks

The Role of Strategic Airline Alliances in Africa

    No full text
This paper considers the impact of strategic airline alliances on African aviation. Globally, there has been an ongoing trend towards airlines coordinating their activities via strategic alliances and joint ventures. These alliances affect market competition, including the quality and costs of services provided. Despite the economic benefits found in prior analyses of alliances in other markets, the study of alliance participation by African airlines is very limited. Our empirical analysis indicates that membership of one of the three global alliances could, by expanding their market presence, benefit African airlines. It would add to their passenger flows and enhance their economic efficiency
