Out of concern for language ‘purity’ ‘Polonizing’ dictionaries/dictionaries of Polish equivalents were published in Poland, whose authors (language purists) aimed to replace words/expressions of foreign origin with native-language equivalents (or with assimilated loanwords). Besides Latinisms or Gallicisms under criticism were also German loanwords. The main focus of the paper is on the presentation of the dictionary by E.S. Kortowicz (1891), in which the author seeks to eliminate Germanisms from the Polish language.W trosce o „czystość” językową w Polsce tworzone były „słowniki spolszczające”/,,słowniki spolszczeń”, w których autorzy (puryści językowi) próbowali zastępować wyrazy/wyrażenia pochodzenia obcego rodzimymi ekwiwalentami (lub zasymilowanymi zapożyczeniami). Obok latynizmów czy galicyzmów piętnowano w nich często zapożyczenia z języka niemieckiego. Centralną część publikacji stanowi opis pracy E.S. Kortowicza (1891), w której autor dąży do wyeliminowania germanizmów z języka polskiego

The Art of Fatimah Tuggar” a cura di M. Lightsmith). The assertion of black culture in the New World is examined through an anthropological angle that privileges the aspects of metissage and hybridization: the overview of the “africanisms” in America here offered span the middle passage, the family systems, the identity and self-representation dynamics and the civil rights movements. It also includes the Blacks’ portrait in the cinema, the TV and the commercial advertisement. The analysis carried on is based on the perspective of the classical anthropological studies and on the more recent Black Studies. (The essay constitutes the first half of the volume Black Inc. edited by the Author and has 2 DvD attached: “Africanisms in America” edited by C. Nobili and “Beyond Boudaries and Unframed. The Art of Fatimah Tuggar” edited by M. Lightsmith)

Gloss on the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights of 25 October 2018 in case E.S v. Austria, appl. no. 38450/12

    No full text
The gloss deals with the judgment issued by the ECtHR on 25 October 2018 concerning freedom of expression as provided for in Article 10 ECHR. In the case of E.S. v. Austria the ECtHR agreed with domestic courts that the applicant’s statements concerning the marriage life style of Muhammad were “inciting hatred or religious intolerance” read in the light of Article 188 of the Austrian Criminal Code. During the public debate, the applicant made a reference to “paedophilia”, while talking about 56-year-old Muhammad having sexual intercourse with his 9-year-old wife Aisha. The main thesis of the author of this gloss is contrary to the ECtHR judges’ viewpoint, especially in the context of the facts of the case and the previous Strasbourg case law. Going further, the author presents her fears that the visible and ongoing Islamisation of Europe starts to have its potential impact on the judicial authorities and their attitudes in cases connected with some sensitive issues of Islam. The author’s opinion concerns both the domestic and regional courts’ attitudes.

Designing for learning and support: The user-centred construction and evaluation of an on-line environment for Malaysian teachers learning about digital graphics

    No full text
This research focused on the importance of user context in designing learning and support in an online learning environment since the increase of the use of online learning environment had produced several problems and perceptions among students. Therefore, user support system is a significant element in designing an online learning system. The study involved the processes of designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the online learning environment and a corresponding support system for a digital graphics domain, based on a user-centred construction. In addition, the focus was on supporting the students in dealing with learning problems and technical difficulties during the online learning session. The research consisted of three stages. The first stage involved the process of gathering information regarding the user needs and their points of view toward the designs of the online learning system. Most recent models on web development only focus on tools development and learning theories without emphasising on the learner's points of view and user centred approach. Therefore, in this study, a user-centred design was used to involve the learners in the design process. In doing so, the SUNA (Scenario User Needs Analysis) and Activity Theory frameworks were used in identifying learner needs in their particular context and implementing them into the system. The second stage of the study provided the framework to support the iterative process of designing and evaluating the user's needs. The online learning system was duly developed, based on the outcomes of the iterative design process. Two cycles of iterative process were implemented in order to validate the user needs and to test the system functionality. Finally, the modification process was made and the final system was produced. The third stage involved the implementation and evaluation of the system through online distance learning students in Malaysia. The aim was to investigate what the students had learnt from the system, how the students learnt using the system, how they made use of the tools for learning and the contribution of the system and support to their learning outcomes. The Activity Theory framework was used to analyse the interaction between the learners and their learning environment. The outcomes of the analysis were presented as case studies to determine the interaction of the students with their surrounding artefacts such as tools, community, rules and division of labour. The results of the study indicated that the system was effectively design in catering different learners' perspectives in the online learning environment. This finding is interesting, as it highlighted the system capability in fulfilling the learners' needs within their context. The case studies revealed that every student had different learning strategies and patterns of usage of the tools, when exploring the system. The meaningful interaction of the students in the case studies revealed that the system successfully helped the learners to understand the basic concept of digital graphics. The findings of the research also suggested that the learners have achieved their learning objectives by integrating their knowledge into the course assignments. It also suggested that the system and the support system had contributed to their learning by providing the students with various scaffolding facilities. The major contributions of this research are: a) the design provides effective learner support in an online environment b) the design provides evidence that it fulfils the learner's needs in the context of learning digital graphics

High strength fibre reinforced concrete: Static and fatigue behaviour in bending

    No full text
Recently, a number of high strength and ultra high strength steel fibre concretes have been developed. Since these materials seem very suitable for structures that might be prone to fatigue failure, such as bridge decks, the understanding of the static and fatigue bending behaviour is vital. In order to evaluate the bending behaviour of high and ultra high strength concretes, an experimental and analytical approach was followed. Four mixtures were chosen, two ultra high strength concretes, with a compressive strength of more than 200 MPa, and two high strength concretes, with a compressive strength of 120 MPa. The main testing method was the four point bending test on un-notched beam specimens of dimension 125/125/1000 mm. The beams were tested at a span of 750 mm, loaded in their third points. First a series of static bending tests were performed, followed by a number of fatigue bending tests under different values of the upper load level. A point of further attention was the fibre alignment and dispersion: this was examined with image analysis on photographs of beam cross-sections taken at the fracture surface. The tests showed that the mixtures were deflection hardening materials and also strain hardening materials in tension. The mixture with the best workability had the lowest scatter in the static and fatigue behaviour, and this highlights the effect of the fresh state properties on the material behaviour in the hardened state. The fibre count showed that even though a direct relation was found between the number of fibres in the critical cross-section and the flexural strength of the beam in static loading, such a clear relation was not found in fatigue loading. Also, while in plain concrete the static load-displacement curve has been reported to function as an envelope curve for fatigue displacements, this was not valid for the flexural tests of this study. A general conclusion derived from the fatigue tests of the mixtures in this study, is that the fatigue regulations, as used for normal strength concrete, remain suitable for a safe fatigue design with high and ultra high strength concretes. The experimental results were confirmed with an analytical model, the multi-layer model. The tensile material input parameters were obtained from uniaxial tensile tests. Further, the same multi layer model was adapted and used for the fatigue behaviour. A suitable material input relation is proposed that contains a gradual stiffness and strength decrease with increasing number of load repetitions. With this approach, all three stages of the deformation evolution of a fatigue experiment can be modelled. The proposed model can be easily implemented into existing finite element codes, and can therefore be used for fatigue verifications of larger structural elements of various shapes.Civil Engineering and Geoscience
