Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
An Interactive Computer Aided Design and Analysis Package
In this thesis a NASA developed Markov reliability analysis tool will be ported to a relatively inexpensive IBM-AT enironment. Currently the Markov analysis took, called SURE, is not widely utilized because it runs in an expensive environment consisting of a VAX, megatex display, and template graphics software. Although substantial savings can be madeby running SURE without the expensive grpahics, the user friendliness of the tool dramatically degrated by the lack of graphics. Accordingly a C program using the inexpensive GEM graphics environment has been written. Planarity in ROMDD's of multiple-valued symmetric functions
An important consideration in the design of digital circuits is delay. A major source of delay in VLSI is interconnect. Crossings among interconnect require via's which cause resistance and additional delay. This thesis focuses on circuit design based on the reduced ordered multiple-valued decision diagram (ROMDD), a graph representation of a logic function. Crossings among edges in the ROMDD result in crossings in the circuit. Thus, ROMDD's without crossings reduce delay. Since symmetric functions are important in the design of logic circuits, they are considered here. It is shown that a multiple-valued symmetric function has a planar ROMDD if and only if it is a pseudo-voting n+r function. Interactive multimedia for classroom and web use
Today's advances in technology have provided new tools that allow us to be more creative. The focus of this research is on interactive lesson plans and a web-based tutorial for a graduate level computer architecture class. It contains recommendations for software selection and development methods. In addition, this thesis examines the learning process and describes the necessary ingredients of developing an effective multimedia-based production. Instructional system design (ISD) principles are examined in depth and used as a basis to design the interactive tutorial. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Web-based teaching and learning of Electrical Engineering Courses
This thesis describes the design of an interactive Web-based course, namely EC4810 Fault Tolerant Computing, taught in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), at the Naval Postgraduate School. It is part of the ECE Department's Distributed Learning program in which students will use multimedia enhanced online courses through the Web. Tools for binary decision diagram analysis
The Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) is a very useful representation in the design and verification of switching functions. This is due to to its compactness, where size is measured by the number of nodes. In the implementation of logic circuits, connection of sub-functions is by means of pass transistors. The delay time for the interconnections is often larger than the delay of the decision logic. For that reason, crossings are often more expensive than logic. Planar Binary Decision Diagrams are therefore desirable in implementing logic circuits. This paper presents a method for finding a planar Ordered Binary Decision Diagram (OBDD) for threshold functions. The program that implements the algorithm is written in Borland C++. A special case of Fibonacci threshold function having up to 9 variables is analyzed. It is shown that Fibonacci functions having up to 9 variables have planar OBDD.
