My dear Mr. Zukor: I was in negotiation with Mr. Jesse L, Lasky prior to his departure for the Coast, in a matter in which I represent Miss Ina Claire. Mr. Lasky stated that Famous Players-Lasky Corporation desires to make the motion picture based upon the play" "Polly with a Past" in which picture Miss Ina Claire will be starred. Mr. Lasky informed me that he would write me a letter containing an offer by Famous Players-Lasky Corporation . He later telephoned and stated that he was forced to leave that day for the Coast, but that he had explained the situation to you and that you would, at once communicate with me. Miss Claire desires to do this picture at or about the close of the present season. She must therefore, make her arrangements within a reasonable time, and consider other offers to that end. While there is no understanding whereby Miss Claire is to give Famous Players-Lasky Corporation an option, I am nevertheless inclined to await word from you before taking this matter up with any other concern. Will you kindly let me hear from you at your early convenience. With kind personal re

Michel Foucault and Judith Butler: troubling Butler's appropriation of Foucault's work

One of the main influences on Judith Butler‘s thinking has been the work of Michel Foucault. Although this relationship is often commented on, it is rarely discussed in any detail. My thesis makes a contribution in this area. It presents an analysis of Foucault‘s work with the aim of countering Butler‘s representation of his thinking. In the first part of the thesis, I show how Butler initially interprets Foucault‘s project through Nietzschean genealogy, psychoanalysis and Derridean discourse, and how she later develops this interpretation in line with the progress of her own project. In the main part of the thesis, I present an analysis of Foucault‘s thinking in the period from The Archaeology of Knowledge (1969) to The History of Sexuality volume 1 (1976). This analysis focuses on the aspect of his work which has most influenced Butler‘s thinking: namely the notion of a relationship between knowledge, discourse and power. The other issues in his work which Butler addresses—genealogy, the subject, the body, abnormality, and sexuality—are discussed within this framework. I show how, in the early 1970s, Foucault develops the notion of power-knowledge, and sets out a relationship between power-knowledge and discourse which is overlooked by Butler. I argue that Butler interprets Foucaultian power through the notions of repression and social norms, and ignores the concepts of technology and strategy which form a key part of Foucault‘s thinking. I show how, from The Archaeology of Knowledge on, Foucault develops a socio-historical ontology and a genealogy of the subject, both of which are at variance with Butler‘s interpretation of his thinking

    Intellectual property

The evolution of intellectual property law within the EU legal framework has been substantial and rapid. Previously viewed as a potential exception to the free movement of goods which EU Member States could potentially use to counteract the scope of free movement law, intellectual property law is now seen in a new light in the modern era. A plethora of EU secondary law, and by extension, applying to the entire EEA, have aimed to harmonise elements of the internal market to establish intellectual property rights on a pan-EEA basis. The introduction of EEA law three decades ago, along with the adjudication of the EFTA Court in this area, has sparked a robust discussion about EU/EEA intellectual property law. Even though it may not have been on the terms it initially intended, the EFTA Court has made significant contributions to the field, covering areas such as trademark law, copyright law, and patent law

This article follows previous papers by the author regarding occupational and environmental medicine in the ADF. These articles, as well as a 2019 Productivity Commission inquiry,11 explain why high workplace illness and injury rates confirm the need to improve the management of hazards associated with ADF workplaces, with better emphasis on prevention. This article expands on these papers, regarding what Colonel Arthur Graham Butler referred to in his official WWI medical history as the ‘allegiances’ of military health services, and how, in today’s parlance, these can and should be considered their elemental and enduring ‘missions’
