    ProB: A Model Checker for B

    We present ProB, an animation and model checking tool for the B method. ProB's animation facilities allow users to gain confidence in their specifications, and unlike the animator provided by the B-Toolkit, the user does not have to guess the right values for the operation arguments or choice variables. ProB contains a model checker and a constraint-based checker, both of which can be used to detect various errors in B specifications. We present our first experiences in using ProB on several case studies, highlighting that ProB enables users to uncover errors that are not easily discovered by existing tools

    Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) mediate cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival in immune responses, hematopoiesis, neurogenesis, and other biological processes. STAT3, for example, is involved in the epithelialmesenchymal transition during gastrulation, organogenesis, wound healing, and cancer progression. STAT activity is regulated by a variety of mechanisms, including nuclear translocation. To clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of STAT activity, we performed yeast two-hybrid screening. Here we identified BART (Binder of ADP-ribosylation factor-like Two) as a novel STAT-binding partner. Importantly, we showed that BART is essential for the transcriptional activity and nuclear retention of STAT3. Furthermore, an effector of BART, ADP-ribosylation factor-like 2 (ARL2) was also involved in nuclear retention of STAT3. These results indicate that BART plays an essential role in the nuclear retention of STAT3 through interaction with ARL2

    We present a software tool, the Rodin tool, for formal modelling in Event-B. Event-B is a notation and method developed from the B-Method and is intended to be used with an incremental style of modelling. The idea of incremental modelling has been taken from programming: modern programming languages come with integrated development environments that make it easy to modify and improve programs. The Rodin tool provides such an environment for Event-B. The two main characteristics of the Rodin tool are its ease of use and its extensibility. The tool focuses on modelling. It is easy to modify models and try out variations of a model. The tool can also be extended easily. This will make it possible to adapt the tool specific needs. So the tool can be adapted to fit into existing development processes instead demanding the opposite. We believe that these two characteristics are major points for industrial uptake

    An incremental refinement approach to a development of a flash-based file system in Event-B

    Nowadays, many formal methods are used in the area of software development accompanied by a number of advanced theories and tools. However, more experiments are still required in order to provide significant evidence that will convince and encourage users to use, and gain more benefits from, those theories and tools. Event-B is a formalism used for specifying and reasoning about systems. Rodin is an open and extensible tool for Event-B specification, refinement and proof. The flash file system is a complex system. Such systems are a challenge to specify and verify at this moment in time. This system was chosen as a case study for our experiments, carried out using Event-B and the Rodin tool. The experiments were aimed at developing a rigorous model of flash-based file system; including implementation of the model, providing useful evidence and guidelines to developers and the software industry. We believe that these would convince users and make formal methods more accessible. An incremental refinement was chosen as a strategy in our development. The refinement was used for two different purposes: feature augmentation and structural refinement (covering event and machine decomposition). Several techniques and styles of modelling were investigated and compared; to produce some useful guidelines for modelling, refinement and proof. The model of the flash-based file system we have completed covers three main issues: fault-tolerance, concurrency and wear-levelling process. Our model can deal with concurrent read/write operations and other processes such as block relocation and block erasure. The model tolerates faults that may occur during reading/writing of files. We believe our development acts as an exemplar that other developers can learn from. We also provide systematic rules for translation of Event-B models into Java code. However, more work is required to make these rules more applicable and useful in the future

    Bart Moeyaert as writer, author, performer, and public figure : 'That's Also What Literature Can Be'

    Though only in his mid-fifties, Bart Moeyaert began his writing career over forty years ago, when at age thirteen. In the course of almost four decades as a published author, Moeyaert’s views and writing practices have inevitably evolved. These developments can be attributed to personal experiences from living through adolescence, young adulthood, and middle age, which include his increased independence from his family, influential encounters, and the development of his career as an author and teacher. As a writer, he had the chance to experiment with new genres, topics, and writing styles, gradually growing into Belgium’s most acclaimed children’s author and gaining international fame. In this article, I highlight four crucial experiences that transformed Bart Moeyaert’s views on children’s literature and had an impact on his subsequent books: the influence of Aidan Chambers and his distinction between author and writer; the experience of writing primers with specific, target-audience restraints; the pleasure of performing for a dual audience; and his mandate as Antwerp’s city poet, which provoked a reflection on the writer as a public figure. What these experiences have in common is that they produced a tension between Moeyaert’s personal and artistic desires on the one hand and considerations for his readership and broader social needs on the other. As such, this article seeks to contribute to a better understanding of Moeyaert’s developing poetics and diverse oeuvre, and to consider how an author’s growing age and concomitant experiences can influence their views and work
