Vol. 1, no. 1 p. 268.</p> <p> <b>Referred material.</b> San Felipe II: Proximal end of right femur, MNHNCu 75.3231; distal halves of right MNHNCu 75.3232, and left, MNHNCu 75.3233 tibiotarsi; distal end of left tibiotarsus, MNHNCu 75.3234; distal halves of right MNHNCu 75.3235, and left, MNHNCu 75.3236 tarsometatarsi.</p> <p> <b>Description.</b> Size, proportions and characters as in <i>Buteo lineatus</i> (see comparisons, description, measurements and illustrations of this material in Suárez & Olson 2003b).</p> <p> <b>Comments.</b> This species was first recorded in the West Indies from cave deposits in the Bahamas (Olson 2000), after a review (Olson & Hilgartner 1982) of the fossil material of <i>Calohierax quadratus</i> Wetmore, 1937. The only record of this taxon in Cuba is from Las Breas de San Felipe (Suárez & Olson 2003b).     On 14 April 2016 at 10:54 CDT, from approximately 20 m away,Caldwell (KC) observed a Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) takinga large tadpole (&gt;5 cm in length) from the surface of an experimentalpond tank at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Bryan County,Oklahoma. The tank is one of 12 tanks in an outdoor aquatics facility, allof which are 6 m in diameter and 2.5 m deep. KC was unable to identifythe species of tadpole; however, the only anuran species observed in thetanks at the time were bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeiana) and southernleopard frogs (L. sphenocephalus). The hawk immediately perchedon top of the 2.5 m high perimeter fence surrounding the tanks andconsumed the tadpole

    I used video monitoring to quantify egg-laying intervals, partial incubation, hatching asynchrony, feeding rates, sibling aggression, and causes of mortality or nest failure in a suburban population of Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus). The egg-laying interval and parents\u27 partial incubation behavior during egg-laying resulted in a significant correlation between the sum of incubation time during egg-laying and the hatching span (r2 = 0.83, p \u3c0.0001). Hatch rank was the most significant predictor for both the amount of food consumed and the number of aggressive acts displayed by a nestling. First-hatched senior nestlings received significantly more food and were significantly more aggressive than junior nestlings. Broods of three displayed significantly more aggression than broods of two, and aggression decreased significantly from week two to three. There was no significant relationship between the total amount of food consumed and the total amount of aggression in each nest, which rejects the food amount hypothesis

    Raptor abundance and diversity and red-shouldered hawk ( Buteo lineatus) habitat characteristics on reclaimed mountaintop mines in southern West Virginia

    Raptor abundance and diversity were compared between 4 treatments (grassland, shrub/pole, fragmented forest, and intact forest) over 3 seasons (migration, summer, and winter) on 3 mountaintop/valley fill mines in southern West Virginia. Habitat characteristics of Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) were examined at landscape and microhabitat scales. Forty-eight points were surveyed monthly (Feb. 2000--Jan. 2001) using broadcast calls. I quantified microhabitat characteristics within an 11.3 m radius plot and landscape characteristics within 1000 and 564 m buffer zones at each point. Abundance was highest in grasslands; richness did not differ among treatments. Overall, I detected a shift from a forest to a grassland raptor community. Red-shouldered Hawks were the most common woodland raptor species, occurring almost exclusively in the 2 forest treatments, particularly in the intact forest. Amount of wetland in the landscape was the key characteristic determining presence of Red-shouldered Hawks. Woody debris was positively related to their abundance
