This paper aims to investigate the motif of the sea present in the short stories written by the Portuguese author Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. A general presentation of the author’s life and of her work (especially fiction) is followed by a review of the sea in the history of literature and by a review of its importance to Portugal and to the author herself. Finally, the last part of the paper delves into the short stories in which the motif is of uppermost significance – A Menina do Mar, A Casa do Mar, Praia, Saga, Era Uma Vez Uma Praia Atlântica and Homero. A detailed analysis of the sea and other maritime elements is carried out in the context of each short story, with emphasis on rich imagery, which activates all senses through the use of stylistic devices, and symbology, which points to the sea being an inexhaustible source not only of inspiration, but also of comfort and happiness to the author.
THE ROLE OF GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF LAW IN THE INTERPRETATION OF UNION LAW
Analizom sudske prakse, autorica identificira probleme i izazove u primjeni općih načela prava u tumačenju prava Unije te ističe potencijalne izazove u njihovoj ulozi u pravnom sustavu Europske unije. The increasing need for legal regulation in emerging areas at the European Union level, coupled with the growing number of legal acts, places additional strain on the Union’s legal system. Despite efforts by legislative bodies, regulation in these new areas often falls behind the pace of real-life developments, posing an additional challenge for courts in resolving cases through the interpretation and application of legal norms. General principles of law, as part of EU primary law, serve as an autonomous source of law while also aiding in the interpretation of Union law, though there is often ambiguity over which of these roles should take precedence. This paper focuses on the creation of general principles of law and their role in the interpretation of Union law by national courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Through an analysis of case law, the author identifies key issues and challenges in applying these principles when interpreting Union law and underscores potential future challenges concerning their role in the EU legal system
Social determinants of health influence on re-admittance rates and mortality for the congestive heart failure patient: a systematic review
Objective: The objective of this Systematic Review was to examine the evidence on Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) (specifically, poverty/income and health literacy) to determine their influence on readmission and mortality rates in the cardiovascular-disease population.
Background: Heart disease claims over 600,000 lives per year in the United States. While healthcare has advanced in treatment, many socioeconomic factors lead to readmission and mortality in this population.
Inclusion criteria: Adult male and female patients, 65 years of age and older with a diagnosis of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) who were readmitted following hospitalization for the same diagnosis.
Method: This is a systemic review of quantitative studies. The standard 3-step search strategy of JBI was used to find eligible studies. These were screened by title, abstract and full review for relevance. Critical appraisal and data extraction were performed by two reviewers working independently using the JBI SUMARI tools. The data extraction forms used were based on the selected study’s design.
Results: Of the initial 106 initial articles retrieved, seven full-text articles meeting all inclusion criteria were selected and appraised by two independent reviewers. Three of these articles were then excluded for unreliable results related to bias, and inadequate/lack of information in the article. Four articles were selected for extraction, analysis, and synthesis. These included one randomized control trial (RCT), one analytical cross-sectional study and two cohort studies. A narrative synthesis of these four articles was performed due to the lack of quantitative data to perform a meta-analysis.
Conclusions: The results of this review provide a greater understanding of the scope of healthcare determinants in society, including race, which is tied to economic issues. Among patients with heart failure over the age of 65 years, poverty was found to most influence readmittance rates and mortality rates, and a correlation was seen between low socioeconomic status and poor health literacy. Race was also a contributor as Black people tended to live in more impoverished areas and experienced higher readmission and mortality rates than White people living in the same area.D.N.P.Includes bibliographical reference
EXTREMELY LOW FREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD EXPOSURE MEASUREMENT in the VICINITY of WIND TURBINES
Background: There is an exponential growth of public concern worldwide regarding the exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated by wind turbines. The high concern of the general population enhances the fact that EMF exposure remains a crucial issue that demands specific actions and reliable data to evaluate possible health hazards. Materials and Methods: EMF exposure measurements were conducted in two wind farm (W/F) areas in Greece. The magnetic field strength concentrated in the proximity of 22 wind turbines (20 type of Gamesa Eolica Siemens of total power of 17 MW and 2 type of E53 Enercon, 800 KW each). Measurements were conducted using a Narda-NBM-550 basic unit (Narda Safety Test Solutions Company) using EHP-50F probe. The EMF exposure measurements were processed applying the weighted peak method (WPM), according to the 2013/35/EU Directive. WPM provides correction of the measured value of pulse signals, taking into account the phases of the various frequency components. The data were classified under two scenarios of EMF exposure: ‘high wind’ and ‘low wind’ conditions. Results: The variation of the magnetic field strength was calculated between 1.13 and 1.42% (WPM). Measurements indicate that the intensity of the emitted magnetic field at the base of the wind turbines, in both high and low wind conditions, was relatively low (mean = 0.146 μT), while decreasing rapidly with increasing distance and reaching background values 6 m from the base. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that EMF levels are similar or even lower compared to those in urban areas and well below the national and international safety limits. © The Author(s) 2020
The present curricular integration work consists of the development of an
interactive motion comic, the same one that is oriented to children who attend
the Elementary Sub-level of General Basic Education, who range between 6
and 8 years old, as stipulated in the curriculum presented by the Ministry of
Education of Ecuador in the year 2021. The purpose of this work is to offer an
innovative alternative for the area of education, which plays the role of a playful
and didactic tool as a pedagogical strategy for the development of reading
skills, such as such as reading comprehension and association. By having
these qualities, at the same time, it also aims to instill and make known to the
viewer part of the national oral heritage, since the traditional story "Vico y El
Duende" from the book "Cuentos Ecuatorianos de Aparecidos" was taken as
the theme by the author Mario Conde, a story that belongs to the Ecuadorian
inter-Andean region; being this re-adapted and illustrated with a style suitable
for a children's audience, in this way it implements an omniscient narrator
throughout the story that helps by complementing the cinematics when
visualizing and carrying out the activities arranged in the interactive
application, thus taking advantage of the potential offered by an interactive tale
as a school tool, in favor of fulfilling educational objectives
