    Driving business transformation toward sustainability: exploring the impact of supporting IS on the performance contribution of eco-innovations

    Information systems (IS) can foster business transformation toward sustainability on a large scale by supporting green technologies, thereby creating hybrid physical–digital solutions that are able to fulfil organizational performance requirements and contribute to sustainable business practices. These supporting IS provide an alternative path to corporate sustainability rather than just contributing to the ‘greening’ of business practices by aiming to improve the organizational performance impact of environmental advantageous innovations, which in turn fosters their adoption. Employing a multiple case study comprising eight companies that have implemented such eco‐innovations (specifically electric vehicles) in their business processes, our findings indicate that the organizational performance contribution of eco‐innovations is improved when complemented by supporting IS. This effect is achieved by (1) enhancing the efficiency of the business processes in which the eco‐innovations are deployed, thus increasing eco‐efficiency, and (2) enabling new functionalities, processes and business models that help achieve organizational sustainability goals, thereby driving eco‐effectiveness. With these two aspects, we add two functional affordances – technological flexibility and digital eco‐innovation – to the existing knowledge base of Green IS and point to an elaborated role of IS in sustainability transformation

    Introduction of an Electric Mobility Technological Architecture Framework – An Overview of EV specific Services and Functionalities

    Based on a three-dimensional morphological analysis approach embedded in an explorative technology roadmapping process, we have developed a framework which is intended to help organize the multitude of entities and functional requirements within the domain of electric mobility. The goal was to gain, in a structured way, a better understanding about this complex field. For that purpose, descriptions and an initial validation of physical interfaces and prospective services in EV scenarios are introduced. An experts' evaluation clearly shows that the framework encompasses all interfaces and service groups existing within an electric vehicle setting. The development of the framework is intended to be a contribution to the energy informatics domain and aims at reducing the electric mobility domain's complexity. Thus it is supposed to encourage market players to get engaged with the domain supporting the shift towards sustainable mobility

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Valuing Battery Degradation from a Battery Lessor’s Perspective

    In order to promote the market-introduction phase of electric mobility, car manufacturers will have to face the residual value risk of electric cars for consumers, particularly concerning the battery. An increasingly common trend to minimize uncertainties for the consumer, is the separate leasing of the battery. In this paper we examine degradation in lithium-ion batteries from a lessor’s perspective. We suppose that battery life can be influenced directly by the user. In the case of a lease contract, the battery always remains the property of the lessor. In this respect, there are no direct incentives for the user to increase battery life by expending additional effort. Therefore, we discuss the idea of a dynamic leasing concept as an opportunity for car manufacturers to encourage consumers to adopt a gentle treatment of the battery in order to extend battery lifetime and thus the residual value. Therefore, we examine the effects of different charging strategies on a battery’s residual value to verify whether there is potential for a deeper investigation of a dynamic battery leasing approach. In order to quantify the extent of user influence on battery life, lifetime simulations are performed for different charging scenarios. For our calculations we use a degradation model as a function of the depth of discharge. Furthermore, realistic driving patterns are taken into account to estimate the quantity of energy processed as a function of use mode

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
