Antropomorfisme by diere in die afrikaanse volkslied: 'n Analise van "Apie se bruilof"
Get PDFOPSOMMING: Die skaarste aan tradisionele Afrikaanse volksballades maak dit uit 'n volkskundige, kultuurhistoriese en akademiese oogpunt van belang dat dié wat wel opgeteken is, deeglik ondersoek en geanaliseer word. Die lied "Apie se bruilof", of, soos oorspronklik deur Melt Brink geskep, "Die bruilof van Miss Aap", bied baie stof vir analise, omdat dit die interessante tegniek van antropomorfisme gebruik. Dit is 'n tegniek wat uiters skaars is in Afrikaanse ballades, hoewel volop in kinderryme en -liedjies, sowel as in volksverhale. Die menslike rolle wat in die ballade aan diere toegeken word, is in hierdie ondersoek ontleed deur onder meer te probeer vasstel of daar spesifieke redes vir die spesifieke rolle is. Die ander twee elemente in die lied wat ondersoek word, is die samestelling van die refrein, wat spesifiek na die dansparty verwys, en die addisionele element van "nuttige resepte" wat in die ballade ingebring word deur middel van die spyskaart van die bruilofsfees. Die abstrakte "bestanddele' van die resepte is van diere-herkoms, wat dit laat inskakel by die gebruik van antropomorfisme, en die aanbied van ander diere en insekte op die spyskaart. ABSTRACT: From a folkloristic, cultural historical and academic perspective it is important to analyse the existing traditional Afrikaans folk ballads, because of the scarcity thereof. The song "Apie se bruilof" (The monkey's wedding), or, as titled originally by the author Melt Brink, "Die bruilof van Miss Aap" (The wedding of Miss Monkey), lends itself to thorough analysis, because of the technique of anthropomorphism that is applied - a technique very rare in Afrikaans ballads, though abundant in children's songs and rhymes, as well as in folk tales. In this ballad the human roles allocated to animals will be analysed by trying to establish, amongst other things, whether there are specific reasons for specific roles. The two other elements in the ballad that are investigated are the chorus, referring to the dance at the wedding, and the additional element of "useful recipes", brought into the ballad by the menu of the wedding dinner. The abstract "ingredients" of the recipes are of animal origin, which connects them to the use of anthropomorphism and the appearance of other animals and insects on the menu

No full textDuring an extensive investigation project on Old Cape furniture names and dates on furniture led to several questions about their significance. Owners, collectors and even dealers often make the wrong conclusions about inscriptions on furniture. An extensive knowledge of furniture styles is a requirement to come to valid conclusions. It is also necessary to undertake genealogical research to obtain more information on the names. In the absence of church pews, members of a congregation carried their own chairs to church services and often left them there. For that purpose the chairs were identified by the names of the owners and the birth dates of the women that often appeared on the back rests of the chairs. It could, however, not be assumed that the piece was necessarily a “kerkstoel” when it was marked with a name or a date. There are many misconceptions about the origin of the song "Daar kom die Alibama" and many erroneous conclusions are made as a result of the distortion or misinterpretation of historical events. The absence of a historical awareness amongst the general public, combined with exposure to misleading and propagandistic statements about this song, contribute to confusion and the spreading of myths about this very popular Afrikaans folksong. In this investigation of the theories on the origin of the song, based on a thorough study of primary and secondary sources, the goal is to refute certain untruths and blunders. During this process it was inevitable to point out wrong conclusions and mistakes made by prior writers and speakers on this topic. The role of two ships named Alabama in the creation of the folk song, is carefully traced in an attempt to verify the origin. No full textMost international authors on the art of furniture making or furniture styles mention that architecture has influenced furniture and not the other way round. Although limited information on furniture and articles in daily use of the Classical era is reflected in murals and mosaic floors, no physical evidence of furniture remained, therefore designers of the early Renaissance mainly copied motifs from architecture. This trend continued over the following centuries, presenting architectural elements in varying degrees in furniture. Sometimes furniture resembled buildings in miniature form, and in other instances the architectural elements were applied subtly as decorations. In Old Cape furniture it was especially this last way in which the two art forms were being connected. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

MSB 522, created at least partly at the Cape, South Africa, and considers the questions: who
created the manuscript, what is the food culture of the manuscript and what is the significance
of its contribution to South African food culture? It explores the genealogical background of the
contributors to the recipe manuscript, the historical social background and an in-depth analysis
of the recipes. This requires transcribing the original manuscript and dating of the recipes, for
the purpose of placing the study within a specific historical time frame.
While food as a media subject for entertainment, tourism, travelling and social media
engagement has gained immense popularity worldwide, South African food culture is not well
defined, partly due to a lack of academic studies. As a result many different definitions of South
African food culture exist, often addressing the authenticity of the cuisine, which is an essential
part of any food experience. The primary focus of this study is to determine the food culture of
MSB 522. It is regarded as an activity from the past that provides material for new creations in
future. The extent to which this dynamic process has an impact on contemporary South African
culinary culture is investigated. The study also aims to contribute to the literature of early Cape
cuisine, since recipes dating from the 18th century are not well recorded.
Recipe Manuscript 522 is used as primary source, along with other recipe manuscripts and
archival material, including certificates of birth, death and marriages, estate papers, wills and
title deeds. Given the interdisciplinary nature of food as an academic subject this study will
engage the theoretical framework of both Lévi-Strauss and Burden, supplemented with the
structured framework of researchers Wheaton, Bertelsen and Albala to specifically study
culinary text.Master

Een van die redes vir hierdie simpatieke houding, spesifiek teenoor die ATKV, was die organisasie se lang verbintenis met die Afrikaner se volkstrewe sedert sy stigting in 1930. Die uiteindelike politieke magsoorname van die Afrikaner in 1948 het tot gevolg gehad dat die Afrikaner-establishment (die ATKV ingesluit) deur die grootste deel van die Suid-Afrikaanse bevolking met die apartheidsbeleid van die regering geassosieer is, en gevolglik op verskeie maniere deur mense buite die organisasie gediskrediteer is. Meningsvormers van binne en buite Afrikanergeledere het veral gedurende die tagtigerjare ’n groot rol gespeel in die skep van ʼn klimaat wat tot ʼn proses van selfondersoek deur die Afrikaner aangaande sy identiteit en sy politieke denke gelei het. Die ATKV-leierskap het gevolglik die potensiële impak van moontlike politieke en kulturele veranderinge op die ATKV geantisipeer en pro-aktief daarvoor begin beplan. Dit het daartoe gelei dat die “nuwe Afrikaners” in die ATKV bereid was om hulle eens hoofsaaklik eksklusiewe Afrikanerorganisasie vir alle Afrikaanssprekendes, ongeag ras, afkoms of godsdienstige oortuiging, oop te stel. Die politieke oorgang van die neëntigerjare het hierdie groter openheid van denke binne die ATKV versnel en die organisasie het homself toenemend ten opsigte van sy potensieel nuwe mark, die breë Afrikaanse gemeenskap, begin posisioneer. Dít het weer aanleiding gegee tot aanpassingspatrone binne die organisasie. Laasgenoemde aanpassingspatrone vorm die kern van hierdie studie se ondersoek en bevindings. Die gevolgtrekking waartoe geraak word, is dat die ATKV in die tydperk 1980 tot 2009 suksesvol by ʼn veranderende politieke en kulturele milieu aangepas het. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
