The whole-body protein turnover response to the ingestion of intrinsically labeled eggs at rest and after endurance exercise
A large focus of post-exercise recovery has been on the ingestion of dietary or supplemental protein to maximize skeletal muscle protein synthesis to facilitate remodeling (e.g., growth and repair of muscle). However, considerably less attention has been paid to the repletion of exercise-induced oxidative losses at the whole-body level. Body protein pools are continuously in flux and contribute protein for oxidative purposes during rest and exercise, and therefore have a recovery cost beyond the muscle-specific pool. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whole protein metabolism to prolonged endurance exercise, followed by the ingestion of a mixed macronutrient beverage that included moderate amounts of dietary protein in the form of intrinsically labeled egg protein in trained males. Specifically, we sought to examine dietary protein digestion and absorption kinetics, leucine oxidation, and postprandial net leucine balance at rest and after a bout of moderate-intensity running exercise. Seven trained young males were studied after receiving a primed, continuous infusion of L-[1-13C]leucine and ingesting a beverage containing 18 g of egg protein intrinsically labeled with L-[2H3]leucine after 1 hour of treadmill running at 70% VO2peak. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Perivascular cell contribution to skeletal muscle repair following physiological injury
PURPOSE: We have previously demonstrated that muscle-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs; Sca-1+CD45-) accelerate Pax7+ satellite cell expansion and fiber repair during the initial stages of eccentric exercise training in mice. MSCs are a heterogeneous population of perivascular stromal cells, including but not limited to, pericytes, fibroadipogenic progenitor cells, and smooth muscle cells. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the specific contribution of muscle-derived pericytes (CD146+CD45-CD31- or CD146+Lin-) to skeletal muscle repair following physiological injury. METHODS: Adult male wild type mice received bilateral intramuscular injection of pericytes 24 hr after a single bout of resistance exercise initiated by electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve (n=5-6/group). Mice were sacrificed 4 days post-stimulation and the tibialis anterior muscles were analyzed for markers of damage (IgG+ myofibers, collagen), inflammation (CD11+ cells), and repair (fiber CSA, CLN+ fibers, myonuclei content). To determine the impact of the pericyte secretome on myoblast expansion and myotube development, CD146+Lin- pericytes were isolated from adult male wild type mouse skeletal muscle via enzymatic digestion and FACS. Following 12 days of recovery in culture, isolated pericytes were subjected to strain (10%, 1 Hz) for 1 hr using a Flexercell Strain unit. Conditioned media (CM) was collected from strained (CM-S) or unstrained (CM-NS) pericytes 24 hr later and applied to C2C12 myoblasts for up to 72 hr. RESULTS: Pericyte transplantation following electrical stimulation inhibited inflammation based on CD11b+ quantity and recovered the capillary-to-fiber ratio (P<0.05). The application of CM-S simultaneously reduced C2C12 quantity and increased myotube formation compared to CM-NS (P<0.05). Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Manipulating dietary protein density and its effect on training-induced muscle performance and overall health among middle-aged adults
By 2050, the aging population worldwide is expected to increase vastly. This has major implications as the progressive loss of muscle strength is a common consequence of aging and negatively impacts physical performance and ultimately, independence and quality of life. The underlying mechanistic cause of this age-related strength loss is likely related to alterations in overall muscle mass and neuromuscular function. It has been proposed that lifestyle modifications to include exercise training and higher dietary protein intakes will likely be the most effective approach to offset muscle strength loss with advancing age. Thus, the study within this thesis aimed to examine the effect of manipulating the protein density of the diet in combination with resistance training on skeletal muscle strength and performance adaptations in middle-aged men and women. Fourteen healthy middle-aged adults were randomly assigned to consume protein at the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA; 0.8 – 1.0 g • kg BW-1 • day-1) or twice the Recommended Dietary Allowance (2×RDA; 1.6 – 1.8 g • kg BW-1 • day-1) throughout a supervised 10-week progressive resistance training program. Body composition, muscle strength and performance were evaluated pre- and post-intervention. Results of this study demonstrate that resistance training induced gains in lean body mass and muscle strength are not potentiated when consuming protein in far excess of the protein RDA in middle-aged adults. Thus, consuming protein slightly above the RDA (1.2 g • kg BW-1 • day-1) is adequate to support training-induced muscle adaptations when adhering to a healthy eating pattern consisting of equally distributed protein meals throughout the day.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. F.I.RE. fighters: Fitness intervention in recruit firefighters
As a population, firefighters are at high risk for many health-related issues (e.g., sudden cardiac events, obesity, hypertension, fatigue, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety). Physical activity (i.e., exercise) is one the most effective strategies firefighters can use to prevent or attenuate multiple health risks as well as improve their health and physical fitness as well as job performance. Given the increased risk of many diseases and diminished health, firefighters’ fitness levels are crucial for preventing these potentially morbid diseases or at least decreasing their risk.
The purpose of this project was to examine the relationships between: (1) physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, power, flexibility) and performance on the Illinois Fire Service Institute Academy Firefighter Challenge (AFC); (2) individual differences (exercise intensity preference and tolerance, extraversion) and physical fitness; and (3) individual differences and performance on the AFC. In addition to exploring these relationships, this study examined the effects of a 7-week functional fitness training program by assessing multiple components of fitness at baseline (Week 1), mid-Academy (Week 4), and post (Week 7). This project attempted to establish the role fitness plays on firefighting capabilities and the impact individual differences had on fitness and firefighting capabilities.
Participants were new/novice career firefighters [recruits enrolled in the Basic Firefighter (FF) Academy at the Illinois Fire Service Institute]. Measures of fitness (1.5-mile run time, number of repetitions on 60 s sit-ups and push-ups, vertical jump height, sit and reach) and simulated firefighting drills (Keiser Sled, SCBA maze, victim drag, hose charge, equipment carry, and ladder set-up) were assessed at Week 1 and Week 7 of the Academy. Descriptive measures (age, height, weight, BMI) were also recorded. In addition to these measures, individual trait differences were assessed via questionnaires. Over the course the 7-week Academy, the participants took part in a functional fitness program, designed to improve not only fitness but also their skills as firefighters.
Firefighting is a challenging occupation that requires the men and women who choose to this profession to be in peak physical condition. However, this is not always the case and it is more common that there are unfit and unhealthy firefighters working as first responders. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
