Queer Commons at "we are the next generation exhibition at Kortrijk Creativity Week - Design Region Kortrijk
How do you get a community out of the underground without disrupting its valuable identity? Alexander Auris Gonzales studied the characteristics of the queer community and devised a suitable urban architecture for it. In his ideas about safe spaces for the LGBTQ + community, the student pays special attention to inclusion and the edginess that is so typical of the subculture.
This exhibition is an outcome of the Master's Dissertation work of Alexander Auris Gonzales MAIB 42 supervised by Burak Pak and Hulya Ertas.status: Publishe
BAZAAR FESTIVAL BXL
Commons Josaphat for this occasion organizes a debate marathon within the Bozarexhibition setting. The content is made up by the work of thematic workshops that had built on to the ideas they had accumulated through their call launched in April 2014.
Different working groups had emerged, and all together these have contributed to writing a shared proposal discussing how the city –and more particularly Josaphat- could be produced as a commons.
In the setting of the We-Traders exhibition, the draft version of this written proposal is presented and discussed in depth. Throughout hours of debate, the members of Commons Josaphat present the different themes that are addressed. After which time was given and discuss these with the audience. This moment serves as a critical peer review of the collective work and further builds up the content for the “Josaphat en commun”
publication.
We participated and won the open call for Brussels with the proposal “Bazaar festival”. We-Traders exhibition // BAZAAR FESTIVALstatus: Publishe
Redesigning the urban design studio: Two learning experiments
The main aim of this paper is to discuss how the combination of Web 2.0,
social media and geographic technologies can provide opportunities for learning
and new forms of participation in an urban design studio. This discussion is
mainly based on our recent findings from two experimental urban design studio
setups as well as former research and literature studies. In brief, the web
platform enabled us to extend the learning that took place in the design studio
beyond the studio hours, to represent the design information in novel ways and
allocate multiple communication forms. We found that the student activity in
the introduced web platform was related to their progress up to a certain
extent. Moreover, the students perceived the platform as a convenient medium
and addressed it as a valuable resource for learning. This study should be
conceived as a continuation of a series of our Design Studio 2.0 experiments
which involve the exploitation of opportunities provided by novel
socio-geographic information and communication technologies for the improvement
of the design learning processes.sponsorship: This research is partially based on a three year postdoctoral research project supported by the Brussels Capital Regional Government, Institute for the Encouragement of Scientific Research and Innovation (INNOVIRIS) given to Dr Burak Pak, promoted by Dr Johan Verbeke. The authors would like to thank the students for their contributions and completing the questionnaires. Woonbox Project at Pierre Van Humbeeckstraat, Brussels
In collaboration with Samenlevingsopbouw Brussel, Vandereyt construction company and KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture researchers and students have designed a temporary housing concept project which is currently getting realized in Molenbeek. The co-design for the pilot setup was made last year by as part of the ELB2 elective "Altering Practices for Urban Inclusion", under the supervision of Prof. Burak Pak and Drs.
Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Urban Development Managemen
Design and Development of Sentient Collective Urban Spaces
This chapter aims to envision design approaches for creating ubiquitous interactive spaces which can empower the users to shape and reshape their living environments. It starts with the discussion of the affordances of networked sentient technologies to facilitate cycles of reflexivity through a comparative case study. Based on this analysis, the author distils key principles for future practices including: incomplete, dynamic architectural program, continuous representation of the user needs, incorporation of user variety and differences, embracing open-endedness, self-organization and spontaneity in use. Following these principles, the author reveals a conceptual design for a sentient space in Ghent as a means to demonstrate action possibilities latent in ubiquitous spaces. In conclusion, the author shares lessons learned and elaborates on future directions.status: Publishe
An Operational Framework for an Online Community Based on the Commons, Dissensus and Shared Knowledge
In this article, we introduce a dissensual knowledge production mechanism for the creation and governance of the commons. Rather than seeking a singular truth which is a social construct, producing a bricolage of truths by citizen associations or communities opens up new perspectives for the commons and democracy. Taking an online community as a case study, we analyze knowledge production and sharing mechanisms, and conflict generation and resolution processes, using simple statistics, text mining, disagreement hierarchy, community guidelines, and group rules. We use the conclusions drawn from these techniques in the Institutional Analysis and Development framework. Superposing our findings and critical reading of current best practices, we define the four main principles as the operational framework for an online community based on the commons, dissensus, and shared knowledge: distributed versioning, layering, inclusion, and self-determination.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Spatial Planning and Strateg
Colloidal engines for innovative tests of information thermodynamics
Recent theoretical developments in information thermodynamics elucidated the link between the acquired information and the entropy production through measurement and feedback control by generalizing the fluctuation theorems and the second law of thermodynamics. We summarize here our recent experimental studies based on the colloidal system that have been conducted to test the theoretical findings of information thermodynamics. In particular, we present the design principles of error-free and noisy information engines consisting of a colloidal particle in an optical trap that is capable of performing nearly error-free measurement and ultrafast feedback control. Our perspectives on future experimental studies are also presented. ?? 2020 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group
