Grazing by sea urchins at the margins of barren patches on Mediterranean rocky reefs
No full textThe role played by the urchins, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula, in the formation and persistence of barren areas dominated by encrusting coralline macroalgae is yet to be fully elucidated. This study, carried out in the NW Mediterranean (43A degrees 30'N, 10A degrees 20'E) between February 2005 and April 2006, investigated how the loss or density decrease in one or both urchin species influences the recovery of erect macroalgal stands (dominated by filamentous forms) at the margins of barren areas. At a depth of 4-6 m, three barren patches were assigned to each of the following treatments: (1) control (natural densities of A. lixula and P. lividus); (2) 50 % of the natural density of A. lixula and natural density of P. lividus; (3) total removal of A. lixula and natural density of P. lividus; (4) 50 % of the natural density of P. lividus and natural density of A. lixula; (5) total removal of P. lividus and natural density of A. lixula; (6) 50 % of the natural densities of both A. lixula and P. lividus; (7) total removal of both A. lixula and P. lividus. The effects of the herbivore treatments were evaluated either in the presence or the absence of encrusting corallines. The partial or total removal of A. lixula, P. lividus or both favored the proliferation of filamentous macroalgae at the margins of barren patches. The presence of encrusting corallines reduced the development of these macroalgae. The results of this study suggest that a moderate decrease in the density of just one of the two species can decrease the ability of the herbivore assemblage to control the proliferation of filamentous macroalgae at the margins of barren patches. The extent of barren areas appears, therefore, to be regulated by the outcome of density-dependent interactions between the two species of sea urchins

No full textDurante il Viceregno italiano a Tirana, Gherardo Bosio progetta lo stadio olimpico nazionale sul modello dell’anfiteatro greco, nell’ambito di una grandiosa operazione di espansione urbana. L’impianto sportivo, parzialmente realizzato, verrà completato solo nel 1946 da Irfan Tërshana.
Sul palinsesto della preesistenza storica si “innesta” il progetto dell’Arena Kombëtare disegnata da Archea. La nuova facciata ingloba in una teca il vecchio ingresso alla tribuna centrale, ricercando un punto d’equilibrio fra il rispetto filologico della preesistenza e la vocazione di Landmark a scala territoriale. Si espone l’immagine e al contempo la consistenza per anastilosi, attraverso lo smontaggio e la ricomposizione esatta e filologica di ogni elemento plastico e decorativo. Un gioco di rimandi al passato, una museificazione che trova precedenti illustri nella teca dell’Ara Pacis romana.During the Italian Viceroyalty in Tirana, Gherardo Bosio designed the national Olympic stadium on the model of a Greek amphitheatre, within the context of a major operation of urban expansion. The sporting complex was only partially built and eventually completed by Irfan Tërshana in 1946.
The Arena Kombëtare designed by Archea is 'grafted' upon this pre-existing historical project. The new façade sets the old entrance to the grandstand within a glass casing, striking a balance between a conservationist approach to the pre-existing architecture and the desire to create a landmark on the territorial scale. The appearance and texture are highlighted by anastylosis through the dismantling and careful, conservational reassembling of every plastic and decorative element. This game of references to the past and museumification finds a famous precedent in the casing of the Ara Pacis in Rome

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
