This book review is about the publication coordinated by Stănculescu, Manuela Sofia and authored by Marin, Monica, Buligescu, Bianca and Blaj (Neculau), Georgiana, Serviciile sociale în România - Stare de fapt şi provocări. Servicii de locuire socială [Social Services in Romania – Current Status and Challenges, Social Housing Services], published at Pro Universitaria in 2017. The review identifies and shortly discusses the key issues highlighted by the book and indicates main aspects that could be improved in this study. The book points out a series of fundamental challenges for various types of social policy, like the problem of shared responsibilities and lack of coordination at central level, insufficient funding, the issue of responsibilities poorly implemented at local level, and the problem of the current insufficient and low quality stock of social housing. Steps forward in this book could be brought about by taking a closer look at the relevant practices at European level and by integrating a stronger echo of the needs of potential beneficiaries of social housing in Romania

Atypical Employment for Young Graduates:Does it represent a Stepping Stone or a Trap?

    No full text
The main aim of the current paper is to investigate to what extent atypical employment is a stepping stone for a career. Using a rich retrospective dataset on graduates across 13 European Union countries, REFLEX 2005/2006, the paper tests five hypotheses concerning atypical employment. The main hypothesis tested is whether having a first flexible job increases the chances of being trapped in a secondary labour market as predicted by the labour market segmentation theory. The paper finds that having a first atypical job increases the likelihood of having an atypical job five years later, having a PhD and a self employment first job increases the likelihood of having an atypical job five years later. If the firm faces strong competition or the firm is at the forefront of innovation that decreases the relative risk to have an atypical job, however, if the firm faces uncertain demand that increases the odds to have an atypical job five years later. More innovative firms or firms facing strong competition have personnel policies to retain their highly skilled workers, whereas firms facing uncertain demand use atypical contracts as a buffer. Changing sectors increases the chances of being in an atypical job five years later

The aim of the article is to discuss poverty estimates based on the minimum income that different household types would need to acquire the minimum consumption basket. The article reviews Adina Mihăilescu’s book presenting her main results: the minimum wage and the minimum pension are not set high enough to lift people out of poverty, the unemployment benefit and the minimum income guaranteed do not cover the basic costs of living, having more children increases the risk of poverty, since children’s allowance does not offset the cost

Impactul politicii de acordare a ajutorului social pentru asigurarea venitului minim garantat asupra reducerii sărăciei în România: The impact of the guaranteed minimum income on reducing poverty in Romania

    No full text
The means-tested social benefits provided in Romania are guaranteed minimum income, family support allowance, and heating aid. In this paper, we focus on the allocation of the guaranteed minimum income and their impact on the beneficiaries. Using data from Family Household Budget Survey 2016 we describe the profile of the beneficiaries, and we analyze the extent to which guaranteed minimum income beneficiaries continue to be in situations such as severe material deprivation, and relative poverty after social transfers. The results show that most beneficiaries are in severe material deprivation, with more than half of them deprived of food and new clothes. Also, the guaranteed minimum income manages to lift only 2% out of relative monetary poverty

A combined intervention for executive deficits and anxiety in Parkinson's patients: a case study

    No full text
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder most commonly associated with motor symptomatology, yet often presenting with deficits in attention, executive functioning (EF; e.g., planning, mental flexibility, complex attention), anxiety, and depression, with debilitating effects on patients’ quality of life. Current interventions, including pharmacological and surgical methods show efficacy in motor symptom management, yet produce equivocal results in addressing non-motor dysfunction. The goal of this paper was to describe and investigate the efficacy and patient acceptance of a nonpharmacological intervention for treatment of executive dysfunction (ED) and anxiety in PD, in the context of a case study (the case of Mr. K). Brain and Mind Fitness Program (BMFP) is a short-term intervention, consisting of a combination of cognitive remediation and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). BMFP was demonstrated to be fully acceptable to Mr. K, based on ratings of 4 feasibility dimensions (fatigue, effort, progress, and enjoyment). The program also proved to be efficacious in alleviating Mr. K’s anxiety and depression symptoms, with benefits extending over the treatment period. BMFP, elsewhere shown to be an effective cognitive re-training of EF in PD patients, exhibited limited gains in the case of Mr. K., possibly due to his relatively intact cognitive abilities at baseline. Despite its limitations, the case of Mr. K presents a novel approach to treatment of PD non-motor symptoms and a learning opportunity for researchers and clinicians interested in expanding their knowledge across disciplines.Psy. Abordări conceptuale și metodologii de măsurare a calității vieții. O analiză descriptivă

    No full text
The main objective of this paper is to describe the logic of the conceptual approaches regarding the quality of life, and to identify the main dimensions and measurable indicators of quality of life. The identification of the main conceptualizations of quality of life is an essential step, in the context in which quality of life is often ambiguous or has multiple meanings. Although often used as an umbrella term which encompasses many aspects of human life, we aim to describe the logic of the integrative approaches regarding well-being/ quality of life. The identification of the main dimensions and measurable indicators of quality of life with a brief description of those, will serve to operationalize a list of life quality dimensions.
