Bibliographics for the 983 eprints in the live archives of E-LIS : trends and status report up to 7th July 2004, based on author-self-archiving metadata
The priority for ideas and philosophy related to "Network Theory" have been traced back and documented by Braun(2004),and credit goes to Karinthy(1929).The IT has empowered to realise it, as the most practical phenomena and it is no more a humour. The OAI (Open Archives Initiatives)and ACIS (Academic Contributor Information System)are progressive in the direction ,which may lead to realise the "Collective Genius" at global level. Focus of present study is on Author-Self-Archiving (A-S-A)Metadata of the 983 Eprints in the Live Archives of the E-LIS (EPrints of Library and Information Science),which were approved till 7th July 2004.The A-S-A Metadata was used for librametric analysis. Self-explanatory bibliographics are illustrated. The highlights include: Conference papers (34%); highest approval, June 2004 (28%); published archives (76%);not refereed (52%); not in public domain (60%); highest self-archiving-author (De Robbio, Antonella). The Nos. of EPrints having single JITA domain specifications were: Theoretical and general aspects of libraries and information(27); Information use and sociology of information(80);Users,literacy and reading(13);Libraries as physical collections(30);Publishing and legal issues(57);Management(13);Industry, profession and education(36);Information sources, supports, channels(113) ; Information treatment for information services, Information functions and techniques (101); Technical services libraries, archives and museums(25); Housing technologies(1); Information technology and library technology(92); and Inter-domainery (395) i.e. having specifications of two or more than two JITA classes
Social mechanisms of media institutions: The genesis of recipient's preferences
Within the framework of sociology of media the author explains the behavior of target audiences in the nowadays media environment, analyzes the changing nature of the relationship between the sender and the recipient of the message. The article considers the social mechanisms of the contemporary media institutions and changes in media consumption preferences of different social strata under the growing influence of communication technologies. The author believes that the digitalization determines the audience's need for explanation instead of just information. The virtual reality as a new communication platform becomes a common practice, and the audience becomes its passive participant demanding new ways of realtime access to information. The print media audience is gradually moving from constant reading of one or two mass editions to the study of a large number of specialized media. There is the same trend of the declining share of main television channels in advertising budgets due to the increasing share of specialized network channels. At the same time, advertising budgets are transferred to the mobile platforms for there is a growing need in 'big data' in real time due to the fast development of mobile electronic devices. Tablets and smartphones are attributes of the emerging media ecology that are gradually replacing television for digital generations prefer to watch the same TV content 'outside' the traditional TV environment. © V.L. Is replacing meteorological masts possible?
The capability to acquire accurate and reliable measurements of the wind is essential for wind turbine validation and wind resource assessment. These measurements are typically done with tall meteorological masts (met-masts). However, as of 2004 the concept of remote sensing has started to become specialised in wind energy. A key requirement before full implementation can be accepted, is a fully traceable uncertainty chain. The aim of this thesis is closing the uncertainty chain by providing an innovative best practise guideline in order to establish a quantifiable and repeatable classification uncertainty. After the closure the viability of remote sensing to replace met-masts has been assessed. The classification uncertainty comprises several steps, of which the assessment of interdependency of atmospheric variables was left open by the regulations. This thesis provides a tested automated procedure, hence contributes to both the wind industry and body of science. Based on the results of this thesis it was observed that the usage of thresholds, imposed by the regulations, led to erratic behaviour in the uncertainties. The acquired inconsistencies are significant to the extent that the author recommends not to use the classification uncertainties, and therefore the total uncertainties. As a direct result the author does not recommend a full replacement of met-masts. To improve the current uncertainty model, it is recommended to implement weighing functions to create a smoother output. Furthermore, additional requirements to the acceptance of binned data are recommended in order to avoid skewing of the regression due to biased data-sets, hereby increasing the robustness of the procedure. After these recommendations are implemented it is advised to do a second iteration of establishing the thresholds.Aerospace EngineeringAerodynamic
Pedestrian Dynamics at Transit Stations: An Integrated Pedestrian Flow Modelling Approach
The objective of this chapter is to explore an integrated modelling framework that captures pedestrian walking behaviour in congested and uncongested conditions and covers different traffic dynamics caused by complex geometric and operational characteristics such as those observed in transit stations. The integrated modelling framework is built using concepts from the Social Force model, behavioural heuristics, and materials science. Pedestrian trajectory data provided by the Delft University of Technology were used to test the validity of the aforementioned modelling framework. A simulation study showed that the model reproduces realistic trajectory patterns in an environment similar to that at the Foggy Bottom METRO station in Washington, D.C, USA.Transport and Plannin
Memoirs of Vladimir Lvovich Wagin
This paper is devoted to Vladimir Lvovich Wagin (1907–1984), a famous parasitologist and hydrobiologist. Based on his own memories, the author emphasizes the paternal style of his relationship with students of the Biological Faculty of Leningrad University during the late 1940s – early 1950s, as well as some wonderful traits of his personality. Despite the age difference, the author and V.L. Wagin had a good friendship. The author became an invertebrate zoologist thanks to V.L. Wagin and has been holding true to his ideals for more than 60 years. According to the author's opinion, zoology is always interrelated with organismic physiology, which was inculcated by V.L. Wagin's wise advice. In order to better understand the personality of the researcher, the situation at the Department of Invertebrate Zoology of Leningrad University during the early 1950s, where V.L. Wagin worked, and some traits concerning the portrait of V.A. Dogiel who headed it are briefly described. V.L. Wagin distinguished from other professors of the department because of his reverent and very kind paternal attitude to students. He found strength for talking about science and learning, as well as life. The author especially appreciated this attitude many years later. The basis of educating zoologists at the department during that time was intense practical training in invertebrate zoology. Only a few students, including V.L. Wagin, managed to get through it. In 1957, he became the head of the Department of Invertebrate Zoology of Kazan University and modified the process of educating future zoologists, i.e., he introduced the obligatory marine practice, which, in its turn, formed a solid foundation for the development of studies in the sphere of marine biology. Thus, he laid the foundation of the Russian-known “population” of Kazan seamen, zoologists and hydrobiologists

Railway ballast
Railway ballast is normally made of crushed rocks with grading (particle size distributions). Ballast is inevitably suffering from more rapid degradation. Because ballast keeps undergoing and dissipating most of the train loadings, furthermore, the train speed and freight weight are increasing, causing more intensive loadings to ballast. To prolong ballast service time and reduce ballast maintenance cost, more studies need to be performed on the ballast degradation reduction, ballast inspection, and ballast assessment. Therefore, earlier distinguished studies on these three aspects are introduced, summarized and discussed in this chapter, toward the final goal of providing research gaps, engineering guidance, and maintenance advice.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Railway Engineerin
Civil Engineering and GeosciencesStructural EngineeringRailway Engineerin
