A JOURNEY FROM THE OCTONIONIC P2 TO A FAKE P2

    No full text
We discover a family of surfaces of general type with K2 = 3 and pg = q = 0 as free C13 quotients of special linear cuts of the octonionic projective plane OP2. A special member of the family has 3 singularities of type A2, and is a quotient of a fake projective plane. We use the techniques of earlier work of Borisov and Fatighenti to define this fake projective plane by explicit equations in its bicanonical embedding

The letter bears the impression of a seal and a postmark "AUG B 22 M 1816."Von Buch writes to Allan to thank him for his hospitality during his visit. Though he enjoyed viewing Allan\u27s cabinet of specimens, Von Buch expresses dismay over the papers Allan gave him which attack Von Buch\u27s mentor Werner. Von Buch states that his own views "are to study nature so not to offend any party." He goes on to contrast the views of Werner with Hutton, and he asserts that Werner\u27s students are dispersed all over the world. Closing the letter, Von Buch maintains that he will continue to read Allan\u27s work, and that a moment of "excited passion will never diminsh the respect" he feels for his work. Von Buch studied under Abraham G. Werner, noted geologist, at the Freiberg School of Mining from 1790-1793. He pursued geology afterwards, his investigations leading him from the Alps to the Canary Islands to the Hebrides to the coasts of Ireland and Scotland. His research ultimately lead him to refute many of Werner\u27s theories about "Neptunism," resulting to his conversion to a belief in volcanism which holds that rocks form through volcanic action. Thomas Allan (1777-1833), an Edinburgh born mineralogist, was elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1805 and the Royal Society of London in 1815. He was also a banker and a newspaper proprietor

„Besuch&Buch“: Soziale Bibliotheksarbeit der Stadtbibliothek Graz nach dem Vorbild der „Medienboten“ (Hamburg) im Blickfeld der Gerontologie

    No full text
In 2013 the Public Library of Graz launched a home library service which is unique in Austria up to today: volunteer book messengers visit senior and homebound citizens at their homes. “Besuch&Buch” has been inspired by the “Medienboten”, a socio-cultural project started by Hamburg Public Libraries in 2007. The author – librarian and gerontologist in Graz – has written her master thesis on “Besuch&Buch” and describes why library social projects as “Besuch&Buch” have never been more important than in today’s demographic change
