Reactions to Audiovisual Adaptation on Social Media: The Case of How To Get Away With Murder
Get PDFThis chapter aims at moving away from the more traditional micro-analytical, textual analysis of localized audiovisual texts and toward the more all-encompassing study of audiovisual localization as a practice that includes marketing decisions by distributors and post-hoc reactions by the end-users of audiovisual adaptations. Specifically, this case study detailed in the chapter looks at Italian tweeters’ reactions to a 2016 incident concerning the adaptation of the US TV series How To Get Away With Murder (HTGAWM) (2014–ongoing), in which a sex scene between two men was edited out of the version that was aired on Italian national TV network Rai2. By applying the appraisal theory devised by Martin and White (2005), the chapter looks at the ways in which Italian Twitter users expressed feelings as well as affiliation/disaffiliation with the rest of the virtual community on the issue of the audiovisual adaptation of HTGAWM

Former child language brokers: preliminary observations on practice, attitudes and relational aspects
Get PDFThe present paper sets out to report on the preliminary results of a section of the project InMedioPueri carried out at the Department of Interdiscilinary Studies in Translation, Languages and Cultures of the University of Bologna and having as its general aim the mapping of Child Language Brokering (CLB) as a crucially important but yet not explored phenomenon in Italy (Antonini forthcoming). Specifically, this part of the study aims at outlining the impact of CLB on the development of the children who performed it on an emotional and relational level. In order to systematically explore these aspects, which have been only partially touched upon in the literature (Tse & McQuillan 1996; Buriel et al 1998; Weisskirch & Alva 2002), a significant part of the project is devoted to collecting data concerning the linguistic and cultural mediation activity as perceived by former child language brokers, i.e. by bilingual adolescents and young adults who acted or, in some cases, still act as mediators for their families or other members of the same minority immigrant community who are not fluent in Italian
Acceptance of the Norm or Suspension of Disbelief: The Case of Formulaic Language in Dubbese
No full textThis paper presents the results of an experimental study aimed at investigating audience perception of a specific aspect of dubbing in Italy, namely the influence of source language structures and expressions on target language audiovisual texts. Viewers were first shown selected examples of Anglicisms and dubbese found in US TV programmes and were subsequently tested on their perception of such expressions, with particular focus on an assessment of their likelihood of occurrence in everyday Italian. Data collected by means of questionnaires following viewing proved that, on average, respondents found the expressions and phrases quite unlikely to occur, with the sub-sample composed of audiovisual translation (AVT) professionals indicating the lowest levels of likelihood

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
