    Patrick Grainville : auteur de la F/francophonie ou comment la F/francophonie invente le francophone africain

    No full text
    Qu’est-ce que la F/francophonie pour le romancier français qui utilise l’Afrique francophone comme trame de son histoire ? La présente étude s’est attelée à démontrer qu’un auteur tel que Patrick Grainville est un pur produit de la F/francophonie dans la mesure où il regroupe toutes les caractéristiques et les contradictions de cette institution à la fois politique et culturelle. Ses oeuvres ressassent des antiennes coloniales sous de nouveaux apparats et continue volontairement de minorer les langues populaires issues de l’espace francophone africain. Il sert d’instrument de géopolitique, de vulgarisation de la vision que la France a de l’Africain francophone. Abstract What is F/Francophonie for the French novelist who uses Francophone Africa as the framework of his story? This study attempts to demonstrate that an author such as Patrick Grainville is a pure product of the F/Francophonie insofar as he brings together all the characteristics and contradictions of this institution, both political and cultural. His works reiterate colonial antiphons under new guises and voluntarily continue to undermine the popular languages of the African Francophone space. It serves as an instrument of geopolitics, of popularization of the vision that France has of the francophone African

    Measuring industry-science links through inventor-author relations: A profiling method

    Full text link
    In this pilot study we examine the performance of text-based profiling in recovering a set of validated inventor-author links. In a first step we match patents and publications solely based on their similarity in content. Next, we compare inventor and author names on the highest ranked matches for the occurrence of name matches. Finally, we compare these candidate matches with the names listed in a validated set of inventor-author names. Our text-based profile methodology performs significantly better than a random matching of patents and publications, suggesting that text-based profiling is a valuable complementary tool to the name searches used in previous studies.innovation; industry-science links; text-based profiling;

    A case study of urban public high school students' perspectives of their school as 'in need of improvement' under No Child Left Behind (NCLB)

    No full text
    Since its implementation in 2002, NCLB, through its expectations and sanctions, has created a state of urgency among school leaders and instructional staff in most urban public high schools. While there is significant literature on urban school reform promoting the academic performance of urban high school students, the perspectives of students—those most directly affected by NCLB state-mandated assessments— remain unexplored. The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of students in an urban public high school on their level of awareness of their school’s status as ‘in need of improvement’, the impact of teaching and learning on students’ academic performance, and their suggestions for corrective practices. The study employed a qualitative case study design in order to generate a thick, in-depth description of the perspectives of twelve purposely selected students. Data collected and analyzed from documentary evidence, focus group and one-to-one interviews, as well as informal observations were triangulated to enhance credibility and transferability of the findings. The study’s findings that students were inadequately informed about their school’s overall academic status, that disruptive classroom behavior was the primary factor contributing to students’ poor academic performance, and that students desired more student-based, project-based, interactive instructional practices underscored the usefulness of student voice in the school reform process. The study argues for a meaningful involvement of students in their education and the creation, in urban public high schools, of classroom environments that are productive in terms of student learning.Ed. The structure and function of job crafting

    No full text
    The current study examines the definition, dimensional structure, and nomological network of job crafting, in addition to the ability profiles of job crafters. Job crafting is defined as the physical, cognitive, social, technological, and procedural changes to a job that a worker makes with the intention of improving the job for themselves. Two general categories of job crafting are proposed: an active and goal directed efficiency/effectiveness job crafting and a less active withdrawal oriented form of job crafting. Study one is a qualitative inquiry into the dimensional structure of job crafting, with analyses suggesting seven dimensions. Categories of efficiency/effectiveness job crafting include: work role expansion; implementing work organization; metacognition; adoption of knowledge and technology; and social expansion and facilitation. Withdrawal oriented job crafting includes categories of withdrawal and work role reduction. Study two is an examination of the descriptive characteristics and employees\u27 perceived outcomes of each type of job crafting. Results support the presence of general efficiency/effectiveness and withdrawal oriented categories of job crafting. They also show that elements of efficiency/effectiveness job crafting are perceived as requiring more effort, being engaged more frequently, and being more effective than some elements of withdrawal oriented job crafting. Study three is a quantitative examination of the antecedents and consequences of both types of job crafting. Results suggest that efficiency/effectiveness job crafting is predicted by contextual characteristics supporting job crafting; personal characteristics; and personal work objectives. Efficiency/effectiveness job crafting subsequently predicts outcomes of performance, development, and work experience. Withdrawal oriented job crafting is predicted by personal characteristics and contextual characteristics supporting job crafting. Study four is a quantitative examination of the structure and outcomes of individuals\u27 job crafting ability profiles. Results suggest the presence of five distinct clusters of job crafters. High ability crafters tend to have higher rankings of performance and development than low ability job crafters and some intermediate ability job crafters. However, intermediate and low ability job crafters tend to experience less strain than high ability job crafters. Results, limitations, future directions and managerial implications are discussed

    The role of biomass and biorefineries in a sustainable future

    Some o f the biggest issues facing humanity in the 21st century include energy security, global warming and resource scarcity. These issues will affect every nation and Ireland is no exception. There is much research underway to uncover technologies that will allow the world to overcome such problems, but none offer the flexibility o f biomass. Unlike other sustainable technologies, which offer a solution to one or at most two o f the above problems, biomass as demonstrated by the author, can play a part in mitigating all o f the above problems. It has been known for some time that biomass can be used in various ways as a form o f renewable energy, but with the development o f biorefineries biomass can be used to produce material as well as fuel products. In this report the author has looked at the viability and benefits o f biomass, bioenergy and biorefining in Ireland. The author has demonstrated that such technologies when implemented correctly are sustainable from an economic, environmental and societal point o f view. The author has shown in this thesis that abundant supplies o f biomass make bio re fineries a viable business opportunity in Ireland and has shown how a number o f biorefinery scenarios have the potential to be extremely profitable. The author has evaluated the profitability o f material product-based bio re fineries as well as fuel productbased configurations. The author demonstrated that value-added co-products help to make bio refineries profitable even when excise-relief is not granted on bio fuels. In this thesis the author has revealed some o f the problems that bioenergy and biorefineries have had to overcome to date and examines challenges that remain for bioenergy and biorefining, and looks at the future opportunities for bio fuels. This report concludes that biomass and biorefining has exciting business potential while offering unique opportunities to mitigate the problems o f the future

The definitive version was published in IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering 35 (2010): 710-721, doi:10.1109/JOE.2010.2052875.In this paper, a method for merging partial overlapping time series of ocean profiles into a single time series of profiles using empirical orthogonal function (EOF) decomposition with the objective analysis is presented. The method is used to handle internal waves passing two or more mooring locations from multiple directions, a situation where patterns of variability cannot be accounted for with a simple time lag. Data from one mooring are decomposed into linear combination of EOFs. Objective analysis using data from another mooring and these patterns is then used to build the necessary profile for merging the data, which is a linear combination of the EOFs. This method is applied to temperature data collected at a two vertical moorings in the 2006 New Jersey Shelf Shallow Water Experiment (SW06). Resulting profiles specify conditions for 35 days from sea surface to seafloor at a primary site and allow for reliable acoustic propagation modeling, mode decomposition, and beamforming.This work was supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) under Grants N00014-04-1-0146 and N00014-05-1- 0482, theONRPostdoctoral FellowshipAward under Grant N00014-08-1-0204, and by E. Análise do embaralhamento identitário em Dora Bruder, de Patrick Modiano.
