Corporate responsibility voluntary tools. Codes of conduct, reporting, compensation and commitments
La Boderie, Guy Lefevre de
Guy Lefevre de La Boderie was a renowned orientalist philologist, a translator of ancient and modern languages, an expert in mystical and especially cabalistic doctrines, and a poet. His works were crucial to the spread of Neoplatonic and cabalistic motifs within French Renaissance culture. Influenced by Guillaume Postel, he fostered peaceful dialogue and gradual integration of all religious creeds in light of a cabalistic interpretation of Catholicism
Enterprise Risk Management and resilience in SMEs during COVID-19 pandemic: The case of Italian dealerships
COVID-19 pandemic caused a shift in organizations’ strategic behaviour, from identifying and mitigating specific risks to increasing business resilience. The object of this chapter is to investigate how Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) practices help increase small and medium-sized Italian dealerships strategic and operational resilience, through supporting them to tackle the challenges raised by the disruption and effectively safeguarding their organization’s operational performance. The research relies on in-depth interviews made to professionals of ten companies and on extant frameworks that inform the findings interpretation. The results show that, as defender type firms, the companies investigated initially undervalued COVID-19 crisis effects on their business. Despite this, they transformed their business models to ensure their survival and adapted their risk management processes during and following the shock to build business resilience against future disruptions. The study offers brand new empirical evidence of ERM and resilience within SMEs and provides professionals with a self-assessment checklist on their resilience building capability
The Notion of Faith in the Works of Nicholas Cusanus and Giordano Bruno
It is well known that Giordano Bruno (1548–1600), the famous Italian philosopher and scientist, was deeply influenced by Nicholas of Cusa. Yet scholarship so far, perhaps unsurprisingly given Bruno’s heterodoxy, has neglected the important relation between their accounts of faith. From his first works Bruno shows a deep knowledge of Cusanus’ writings, frequently quoting terms from him and sometimes entire passages. In the De umbris idearum he states the importance of faith by almost paraphrasing the third book of the De docta ignorantia. In his Spaccio de la bestia trionfante Bruno proposes a reform of religion and moral values, and holds trust and charity as the principles of human society. Here Cusanus is directly mentioned. Cusanus’ philosophy always remains a major source for Bruno’s epistemology and for his conception of the search for divinity. However, Bruno’s interpretation of faith is not the same as Cusanus’. For, as Meredith Ziebart has argued, Cusanus aims at merging faith intended in an epistemological sense (as a non-rational kind of knowledge that can orientate human reasoning) and faith intended in a religious sense (as faith in God and in Christ). By contrast, Bruno omits every reference to the Christian God and to Christ when writing about faith. He conceives faith as a disposition of the soul that evaluates the activities of every faculty, thus laying the foundation of every relationship that man can establish with external objects. This kind of faith becomes a key element in Bruno’s epistemology, ethics and magic. In short, with Bruno, a Christian virtue is remodelled in a non-Christian philosophy
Influence of corporate responsibility on financial return in planted forests: case studies from South East Asia and Africa
Investments in planted forests in emerging markets are increasing and investors are looking for Sustainable and Responsible
Investments (SRI) to integrate Environmental, Social And Governance (ESG) into the investment process.
This study presents an ESG Risk Assessment protocol tested in 12 case studies of investments in planted forests evenly distributed between Uganda, Cambodia and Vietnam.
The ESG Risk Assessment allows to identify the most important 25 issues for investments and reveals that existent instruments for SRI are often focusing on issues that on-the-ground are not the major risk sources. This is the case of "Third party certification" and "High Conservation Value Forests" (HCVFs). Few exemptions where SRI tools are properly identifying the major risks are "Tenure rights", "Health and safety of workers" and "Social impact assessment". Climate change impacts, long term financial sustainability, poverty reduction and encroachment are ranked as the most dangerous sources of risk across the 12 case studies.
SRI tools are positively influencing the risk mitigation of investments in planted forests, accounting for a percentage of risk mitigation that ranges from 34 till 60%. FSC certification was often reported by projects' stakeholders as a key instrument to mitigate risk of investments in planted forests
Touristic and recreational uses of forests in peri-urban areas: a case study in Veneto (Northern Italy)
Forests and rural landscapes are crucial for tourism development and recreational activities and they may be relevant resources to
invest for attracting visitors and contribute to the local economy. Tourism can also be an important development factor in terms of employment
opportunities at the local level, thus contributing to the wellbeing of local communities. However, while mountain forests and landscapes are wellknown
and often properly managed for touristic/recreational uses since long time, small and fragmented forests in peri-urban, lowland areas are
less valued.
The paper focuses on lowland forests in Veneto (Northern Italy) located close to Venice and other touristic places along the Adriatic Sea. The area is visited every summer by about 3 millions of tourists and, starting from 35 years ago, has been subject to a large afforestation program. Forests are owned by local Municipalities, while management activities are carried out through various forms: direct management by Municipalities, management agreement with private companies or not-for profit entities, rent to private, etc. Forest owners and managers are supported by the Lowland Forest Association (Associazione Forestale di Pianura, AFP), a unique case of private-public cooperation in lowland forest management in Italy. AFP has been established to help active forest management in the area, encourage positive impacts for locals and enhance the dialogue with multiple stakeholders.
Management operations are not just financed through Municipal budget, but also through funds raised by the AFP via other sources, such as the Rural Development Program and private investors. Ongoing and planned investments aim to increase the capacity of the forests to deliver ecosystem services, including cultural ones. The study provides economic data about the value of ecosystem services and a cost-benefit analysis of planned investments, also in connection to tourism and recreation activities
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
