    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Anticancer - effectiveness of herbal aldehyde derivatives on breast cancer cells

    Background. Breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the leading cancer in women since 2020. Projections indicate a significant increase in new cases and deaths by 2040. There is ongoing research to identify new therapeutic targets and explore their potential for breast cancer treatment. Herbal aldehyde derivatives have demonstrated effects on apoptosis and proliferation in various cancer cell types, although the precise underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate therapeutic potential of herbal aldehyde derivatives in breast cancer through in vitro experiments.Methods. Gene expression in breast cancer cell lines (BT474, HS-578T, and MCF7) was analyzed using qRT-PCR after treatment with eight herbal aldehyde derivatives (2-Bornanone, Heptanal, Alpha-Hexylcinnamaldehyde, Amylcinnamaldehyde, 2 – Methylundecanal, Octanal, Dodecanal, and Cinnamaldehyde). IC50 values for Alpha – Hexylcinnamaldehyde, Amylcinnamaldehyde, and Cinnamaldehyde were determined using the MTT assay. A comprehensive gene expression analysis targeting a broader range of cellular markers was performed using qRT-PCR. Lastly, protein isolation, Western Blot analysis, and immunocytochemistry techniques were employed to investigate cellular responses further.Results. Cinnamaldehyde showed the highest number of significant effects, downregulating 7 genes in BT474, 7 genes in HS-578T, and 10 genes in MCF7. Amylcinnamaldehyde had no significant effect in BT474 but downregulated Ki67 in HS-578T and 3 genes in MCF7. Alpha- Hexylcinnamaldehyde led to significant downregulation of PCNA in BT474, 3 genes in HS- 578T, and 6 genes in MCF7. Notably, MCF7 exhibited the most significant effects, with 19 genes downregulated after treatment with all three substances. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the downregulation of PCNA supporting the findings from gene expression analysis.Discussion. Cinnamaldehyde demonstrates promise for breast cancer therapy, as it exhibited the highest number of significant effects on gene expression related to anti-proliferation, cell cycle inhibition, modulation of signaling pathways, and downregulation of hormone receptors. However, contrasting results were observed at the protein level, including downregulation of OR2J3 in the HS-578T and MCF7 cell lines, while upregulation was observed in BT474. This discrepancy between the cell lines and the gene expression findings presents an intriguing research opportunity to explore the underlying mechanisms in future studies. Nonetheless, the immunohistochemistry results provide additional support for the findings from gene expression analysis

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Zirkulierende Epithelzellen bei der intraduktalen papillär-muzinösen Neoplasie des Pankreas

    Die intraduktale papillär-muzinöse Neoplasie (IPMN) ist eine Vorläuferläsion des Pankreas- karzinoms mit wachsender epidemiologischer Bedeutung. Ihr heterogenes Malignitätsrisiko führt zu der schwierigen Abwägung, welche Patient*innen von einer präventiven Operation profitieren könnten und welche nicht. Etablierte Leitlinien stoßen hierbei an ihre Grenzen, was einen Bedarf an neuen diagnostischen Methoden hervorruft. Erfolgsversprechend könnte die Analyse zirkulierender Epithelzellen (CECs) sein, die auch bei zahlreichen anderen benignen sowie malignen Neoplasien immer intensiver beforscht werden. Ziel dieser explorativen Studie war es deshalb, das Auftreten der CECs bei IPMN-Patient*innen und deren zelluläre sowie genetische Eigenschaften zu beleuchten.Dafür wurden CECs aus Blutproben von 27 IPMN-Patient*innen, die danach operativ am Uniklinikum Freiburg therapiert wurden, größenbasiert isoliert. Die Expression des pankreas- spezifischen Markers PDX1, des epithelialen Markers EpCAM sowie der mesenchymalen Marker Vimentin und L1CAM wurde anschließend durch Immunfluoreszenzfärbungen untersucht. Übersichtsfärbungen dienten nachfolgend zur zytologischen Beurteilung. Zusätzlich erfolgte eine Mutationsanalyse des KRAS-Gens mittels Multitarget Droplet Digital PCR. Gewebeschnitte der OP-Resektate wurden zudem vergleichend herangezogen und durch entsprechende immunhistochemische Färbungen und PCR-Verfahren genauer analysiert. Insgesamt konnten so bei 10 (37,04 %) IPMN-Patient*innen CECs detektiert werden, weitere 13 (48,15 %) hatten hierfür verdächtige Signale. Das Auftreten der CECs schien in dieser explorativen Stichprobe weitgehend unabhängig von den erhobenen Parametern der Standard- diagnostik zu sein, der histologische Dysplasiegrad könnte jedoch Einfluss haben. Die Analyse der zellulären Markerproteine ergab im resezierten Gewebe ausschließlich eine Expression der für Pankreasgangepithel typischen Marker PDX1 und EpCAM. Zudem waren KRAS- Mutationen in 19 (70,37 %) Gewebeproben detektierbar. Bei den CECs fanden sich dagegen häufig hybride zelluläre Phänotypen, die mehrheitlich auch mesenchymale Marker exprimierten. KRAS-Mutationen waren hier in immerhin 5 (23,81 %) Fällen nachweisbar. Zusammenhänge zwischen diesen Charakteristika der CECs und den erhobenen Parametern der Standarddiagnostik ergaben sich, mit wenigen Ausnahmen, nicht.In Summe deuten diese Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass CECs von IPMN-Patient*innen ähnliche Anzeichen der Entdifferenzierung aufweisen wie entsprechende Zellen maligner Neoplasien. Longitudinale Studien sollten folgen, um eine mögliche prognostische Bedeutung zu klären

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
