Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textO gênero Shigella pertence à família Enterobacteriaceae. Ele é divido em 4 \"espécies\" patogênicas para o homem, de acordo com características bioquímicas e antigênicas: S. sonnei, S. boydii, S. flexneri e S. dysenteriae. Essa divisão é apenas didática, pois experimentos de hibridação de DNA sugerem que o gênero é composto por uma única espécie que também compreenderia Escherichia coli. Shigella spp é freqüentemente associada a infecções intestinais denominadas shiguelose ou disenteria bacilar. Na região de Ribeirão Preto existe um quadro endêmico de casos de Shigella spp. No período de janeiro de 1999 a fevereiro de 2000, foram isoladas 64 amostras de Shigella spp. pela Unidade de Emergência do Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto, as quais foram caracterizadas quanto à \"espécie\" e tiveram sua sensibilidade a antibióticos analisada, revelando que 35,13% das amostras eram multirresistentes. Foram também analisadas seis amostras de S. dysenteriae e uma de S. boydii cedidas pelo Instituto Adolfo Lutz de Ribeirão Preto. No presente trabalho a tipagem molecular de tais amostras foi realizada utilizando a técnica de PCR de elementos repetitivos, com iniciadores específicos para as seqüências ERIC e REP, e tipagem por ribotipagem, para verificar se tais metodologias seriam eficientes na discriminação das amostras e identificar diferenças genotípicas entre as quatro \"espécies\" de Shigella spp. Tal análise revelou que REP e ERIC-PCR foram mais eficientes do que ribotipagem na discriminação das amostras analisadas e revelou também que S. sonnei e S. flexneri compartilham mais características em comum entre si do que essas em relação a S. dysenteríae e S. boydii. Os dados ainda sugerem uma possível origem clonal de amostras multirresistentes, já que estas apresentaram grande similaridade genética. O presente trabalho revelou também através do ERIC-PCR uma região do genoma destas bactérias conservada entre as amostras de Shigella spp. que poderia ser utilizada para fins diagnósticos. A função biológica das seqüências ERIC ainda é muito especulativa e desconhecida. Os resultados aqui descritos sugerem a existência de uma pressão seletiva para manter essas seqüências ERIC intactas em uma região específica do genoma. Portanto, uma melhor caracterização desta região genômica poderia revelar a significância biológica das seqüências ERIC.The genus Shigella is a member of the Enterobacteriacea family. lt is divided in 4 patogenic \"species\", according to biochemicals and antigenic characteristics: S. sonnei, S. boydii, S. flexneri e S. dysenteriae. This division is merely didactic, since DNA hybridization experiments have shown that the genus is composed of only one especie which would also include E. coli. Shigella spp. is frequently associated to intestinal infections, also called shigelosis or bacillar dysentery. ln the Ribeirão Preto area, Shigella spp. is an endemic microorganism. From january 1999 to february 2000 there were 64 isolates of Shigella spp. registered by the Unidade de Emergência of the Hospital das Clinicas, which were characterized at the \"species\" level, and by antibiogram, revealing that 35,13% of them were multiresistant samples (MR). Six isolates of S. dysenteriae and one of S. boydii, offered by the Instituto Adolfo Lutz de Ribeirão Preto were also analized. ln the present work, these samples were analized by different molecular typing methods, which included repetitive elements PGR, using the ERIC and REP primers, and typing by ribotyping. These methods were used to determine the similarity existing between these isolates and to analize whether these methods are efficient in discriminating the four Shigella spp. \"species\" in different groups. The analysis revealed that REP and ERIC-PCR were more efficient than ribotyping in discriminating the different isolates, and also revealed that S. sonnei and S. flexneri are more related than with S. dysenteriae and S. boydii. The data also suggest a possible clonal origin of the multiresistant isolates, since they share a great deal of genetic similarity. The present work showed that the ERIC-PCR amplifications revealed a conserved region on the Shigella spp. genoma that could possibly be used as a diagnostic marker. The biological function of ERIC sequences is a matter of speculation and it is presently unknown. The results here described suggested the existence of a selective pressure to maintain ERIC sequences intact in a specific genomic region. Thus, a better characterization of this genomic region could reveal the biological significance of the ERIC sequences

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
