Our Four Walls
When students are given the opportunity to make choices about their own academics it works towards creating an autonomy supportive environment that supports intrinsic motivation. The aim of this capstone project is raise teacher awareness about how when students are part of a classroom community they will be engaged learners and will learn lifelong skills (e.g., self-determination). The author proposes three recommendations that allows students to make decisions on what work they want to display throughout the classroom. The author has written an article for a professional journal, with the help of a community partner, that provides information about how when students are allowed to be decision makers when it comes to the design of the classroom it will create a sense of autonomy and will help students create a sense of engagement of their own education
Efficacy and safety of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine during 18 months after vaccination : a phase 3 randomized, controlled trial in children and young infants at 11 African sites
A malaria vaccine could be an important addition to current control strategies. We report the safety and vaccine efficacy (VE) of the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine during 18 mo following vaccination at 11 African sites with varying malaria transmission.; 6,537 infants aged 6-12 wk and 8,923 children aged 5-17 mo were randomized to receive three doses of RTS,S/AS01 or comparator vaccine. VE against clinical malaria in children during the 18 mo after vaccine dose 3 (per protocol) was 46% (95% CI 42% to 50%) (range 40% to 77%; VE, p>0.01 across all sites). VE during the 20 mo after vaccine dose 1 (intention to treat [ITT]) was 45% (95% CI 41% to 49%). VE against severe malaria, malaria hospitalization, and all-cause hospitalization was 34% (95% CI 15% to 48%), 41% (95% CI 30% to 50%), and 19% (95% CI 11% to 27%), respectively (ITT). VE against clinical malaria in infants was 27% (95% CI 20% to 32%, per protocol; 27% [95% CI 21% to 33%], ITT), with no significant protection against severe malaria, malaria hospitalization, or all-cause hospitalization. Post-vaccination anti-circumsporozoite antibody geometric mean titer varied from 348 to 787 EU/ml across sites in children and from 117 to 335 EU/ml in infants (per protocol). VE waned over time in both age categories (Schoenfeld residuals p>0.001). The number of clinical and severe malaria cases averted per 1,000 children vaccinated ranged across sites from 37 to 2,365 and from -1 to 49, respectively; corresponding ranges among infants were -10 to 1,402 and -13 to 37, respectively (ITT). Meningitis was reported as a serious adverse event in 16/5,949 and 1/2,974 children and in 9/4,358 and 3/2,179 infants in the RTS,S/AS01 and control groups, respectively.; RTS,S/AS01 prevented many cases of clinical and severe malaria over the 18 mo after vaccine dose 3, with the highest impact in areas with the greatest malaria incidence. VE was higher in children than in infants, but even at modest levels of VE, the number of malaria cases averted was substantial. RTS,S/AS01 could be an important addition to current malaria control in Africa
Pretoria Student Law Review 2020-14-2
About the publication Honoured to present to you, the reader, the 2020 edition of the Pretoria Student Law Review (PSLR), an annual publication which is the pride of the best law faculty in Africa (according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings). The University of Pretoria’s Law Faculty ranks in the top 100 law faculties in the world, a feat unequalled in Africa. The PSLR is a student driven law review that creates an interactive forum for students, academics and legal professionals to discuss topical legal matters that challenge the status quo. At the beginning of this year, lay the fantasy of newness — presenting an opportunity to do great things. But as I reflect on the journey leading to this publication, I understand that the 2020 edition of the PSLR had an engine that ran on hope; faith; dedication; perseverance; commitment and hard work. Our predecessors had a vision to create a boldly outlined legacy for the PSLR, they spearheaded the setting up of a system that would last the lifespan of the PSLR. Today, some 13 years after the first edition of the PSLR, South Africa, the continent and the world at large are on the cusp of a new era — socially, economically and politically. When my journey as Editor-in-Chief commenced, I imagined the PSLR as a ship, whose captain was myself. Customarily, it is easy to be a captain of a ship in calm seas, but unlike most of my predecessors, I have had to be the captain of a ship through the heftiest of storms. The world was not truly prepared to face challenges presented by the Covid-19, let alone the PSLR. In the wake of the 4IR and this new age of technology, sailing this ship to success was still a heavy task to complete. It is therefore with great honour to have been able to successfully complete the task for which we, the 14th cohort of the Editorial Board, were called for. We have upheld the esteemed reputations that have been left by our predecessors. Fittingly, I wish to applaud my team for their inspiring commitment, outstanding contribution and service in maintaining the elevated standard of the PSLR. For indeed it is a publication, par excellence. Amidst the storms, we have spearheaded the establishment of a ‘free-floating’ PSLR Collection in the OR Tambo Law Library. This collection is dedicated to house all published PSLR editions, dating since the inception of the PSLR in 2007. We have established and strengthened relations with other Law Faculties in the country, and even beyond. We published the very first special edition of the PSLR, a focused edition that covers a critical issue brought before the South African Law Deans Association — the Decolonisation of Legal Education. We have established a system by which all authors who publish with us, ought to have an ORCID iD. We have adopted internal regulations that outline the principles that govern the Editorial Board. We have spearheaded the adoption and implementation of a policy that forces us to comply with DHET Standards in order to be a DHET Accredited Journal so as to encourage and foster a student culture of critical research & writing in legal academia. I am truly proud of the work that the authors have put into their articles and I would like to thank them for their submissions and tireless efforts to produce quality articles. More-so, I am proud of the Editorial Board for being able to work under immense pressure. This edition would have not been possible without the dedication and hard work of this dream team. I remain indebted to you all: Adelaide Chagopa, Kayla Thomas, Marcia van der Merwe, Nicholas Herd and Phenyo Sekati. It has been a great pleasure and a privilege to have worked with you on this annual edition. A note of thanks to Dr Gustav Muller in his capacity as the Guardian of the PSLR. To the reviewers, your adjudication lays the foundation for each edition, year-in-yearout. Your support and contribution to the PSLR remains invaluable. To Lizette Hermann, Elzet Hurter and Mornay Hassen, thank you for your continued and immeasurable support throughout this journey. To Primrose E.R Kurasha, thank you for believing in me and for guiding me. I am forever indebted to you my friend. To my family: Elizabeth Mtshweni; Jostina Mtshweni; Clayton Mtshweni; Lucas Berto Mateus; Stephine Mashilo and Lerato Mashilo, words cannot begin to express my gratitude for all the support you have given me throughout this journey. Thank you for keeping me sane through one of the toughest times of my ‘publishing’ career. Thank you for the endless amount of support and the unconditional love you give me always. You are the power & oil that kept this engine running, all by the sufficient grace of God. I hereby pass the baton and entrust the next Editor-in-Chief with the difficult task of running faster and running a better marathon than myself and my predecessors. To you future author, I implore you to start writing, for the water does not flow until the faucet is turned on. To you the reader, Jurgen Zwecker was right: enjoy the read — without fear to question what is in front of you, for that is the only way we, as scholars, grow. Simon Motshweni Editor-in-Chief 202

"7;^mw - ^Ji^r<: •;^:.^»»*^/y7i^L^i^2^17LlALi^^On behalf of the yearbook class J would like to thank Mr, Dejong for allowing us time in school hours to complete the yearbook,
and all his dedication and hard work outside of class. J would like to thank the wonderful office staff for their countless hours of
proofing student names and filling us in on activities. Thank you to all staff for putting up with our "sneaky" candid picture snapping
throughout the school year and last but not least Lisa Mstalos for her moments of getting every one back in the game in her "own"
crazy way.
The year started out with a yearbook Conference in
Lethbridge. Ct was a long two days, which set the basis for
the next nine months. Only a few of us could attend but by the
end of the year you couldn't tell because everyone had mastered
the yeartech On-line Program!
Our theme this year was music and songs. Our very diverse
class presented us with a very diverse mix of music throughout
the book, mainly using the titles rather than the entire song.
.As Editor of the 2007 yearbook <7 was quite pleased to find a wonderful array of staff
and talent. For the first semester we had a rather large class but we made it work and
everyone's hard work payed off. Flundreds of hours later we are showcasing an amazing
book/ filled with memories talents and dreams of students come and gone.

JULY THUNDERSTORMS
Summer heat often brews severe thunderstorms like this mesocyclone on
Lake McGregor July 23.
Mesocyclones are typically 2 to 10 km across and often contain hail.
This one dumped 1 3/4 inches of rain halfway down Lake McGregor
but very little in the Village of Milo. Photo by Patsy Byers.

Please join the Board of Directors (BOD) as we review the fundraising efforts to date.
As most are aware, at the June 11 community meeting the members in attendance requested that the BOD pursue the new building proposal presented by a group of local residents. A fundraising committee of 5 members was set up and this committee is busy soliciting pledges/donations. A deadline of July 31 was set by the previous BOD for fundraising.
This meeting is to allow the fundraising committee to provide an update to the BOD & Membership on pledges/donations to date.
A discussion session will be held after the presentation to determine the viability of moving forward with a new building.
The BOD thanks all of you for your input to date and we look forward to your suggestions and comments at this meeting. My thoughts...
The Bible gives commandments, rules for living our lives, examples of the lives of saints, and
occasionally a question and then supplies an answer. In the Book of the prophet Micah we find this
question:
He has told you, O mortal, what is good:
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8
This doesn't seem like God is asking too much of us, does it? Why would we not act in a just
manner to our fellow men? But we don't. Justice is a word bandied about but what does it really
mean? Justice is defined as a concern for justice, peace and a genuine concern for
people. Justice is not the same thing as the law and sometimes we doubt that justice is being
done in the world, although the laws are being followed. Often there seems to be one law for the
large corporations and another for the small fry. One law for the rich and quite another for the
poor and struggling minorities.
Why do we not act with kindness each and every day of our life? But we don't. Would it kill
us to share a kind word of encouragement rather than putting someone down when they are doing
the best job that they can. How many times have your words cut like a knife? There are so many
people that need a word of encouragement, a helping hand. Remember the kindnesses that you
have received at the hand of another person. Pass it forward.
And most importantly, why do we not walk with our God? Many in today's world do not walk
with God, they deny His existence. They choose to ignore the Creator of all that we have today
and of all the days before and all the days to come. We are always quick to say that God loves
you, but sometimes.it seems that we do not make it easy for him to love us. And still He loves us.
As I was writing this, I was listening to a Songs of Praise program on YouTube. A new hymn
(Anglican, of course) was premiered, and the first verse caught my ear and says so much better
what I am trying to say, so I will quote it to you:
God of unchanging grace
To whom alone be praise,
Whose faithfulness and care embrace
The measure of our days.
For all that lies behind,
For blessings yet in store,
For every task by love assigned
We worship and adore.

Did you know our

constantly changing?
Much like Netflix, our
hoopla collection is
always getting new
additions; but titles
are constantly being
removed, as well.
Every month Chinook

what's been added
and removed from

Also important to
know is that Canadian
users of hoopla have
access to different
titles compared to
American hoopla users,
again, like
Netflix. If you get an
error message that a
title you found isn't
available, it's probably
for this reason.

Adult Summer Reading Program
Lethbridge Public Library has opened
their Adult Summer Reading Program
to all Chinook Arch libraries. They
have tried to simplify the program this
year by breaking down the summer
into four sections, each with a unique
theme. Patrons can take an entry form
where they fill out the bottom, and
submit the ballot in order to be eligible
for a prize and they can also fill out the
top with a book review in order to recommend
the book to others. Come to
Milo Library for your ballots.

November is the month for remembering. 2014 is a special anniversary year. In August, 1914, the world plunged in to the 'war to end all wars'. As we are all too aware, from our experiences of the past 100 years, it was really the start to most of the major conflicts of the 20th century. We don't need to rehash history and try to place blame. None of that will bring honour to a generation of young men who were killed, maimed or wounded on the battlefields of Europe 1914 -1918.
In the carnage of the war, there are many examples of individual courage and compassion, countered by the inhumane ways devised to kill humanity. The use of mustard gas in warfare for the first time must rank as one of the most heinous of all time. 100,000 people died and 1,000,000 more were affected by the gassing. The gas did not restrict itself to soldiers, it killed anyone in its path. In the 4 year span of the war, the total casualties were 36 million (16 million died, 20 million wounded).
So why on earth would we want remember such a horrible event in the history of the world?
“Thosewho cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat That is why we must continue to remember, not only for Remembrance Day, when we pay tribute to those who, at the call of King & Country, laid down their lives for the peace and freedom that we enjoy today, but so that such a conflict may never again take place on earth ever again. "Only the dead have seen the end of war."2
For those millions of maimed and wounded that had to try to return to civilian life following the war's end, there was not even the inadequate assistance given to our present day veterans. Post traumatic stress disorder was not acknowledged, although shell shocked would have been the term used then. Soldiers bear the deepest wounds and scars of war."2 Anyone who took part in the fighting, in any capacity, and lived would have had emotion scars that would never heal. "War is hell. 4 And the Great War was possibly the most hellish of all wars.
That is why we must remember it, so that never again should humanity be subject to such carnage. "Lest we forget, Lest we forget."5

Fire Chief Byron Thompson and Vulcan County Fire Marshall Stuart Larson made a surprise visit to our school for Fire Prevention Week. They initiated the fire alarm and observed us as we made our way out of the school. The elementary students watched a video and talked with Byron and Stuart about the importance of smoke detectors.
Thanks to the Milo School Foundation we were able to have the Science in Motion program travel to our school. Our fantastic presenter Jen worked with the different grades doing hands on science experiments, we even had a mini-planetarium set up in the gym, the 7/8 class learned the science behind
roller coasters, the grade 9 students made a pickle glow and the 1/2/3 class made ice cream with liquid nitrogen. The Milo School Foundation also provided funding to have author David A. Poulsen bring his writing workshops to our school. The students really enjoyed the humorous way he shared his love for writing and the creative process.
The volleyball team practiced and played games and finished their season by hosting a one day volleyball tournament. The tournament was a huge success with teams from Arrowwood, Champion, Brant, and Carmangay schools competing. Thanks to Mealane Deitz for organizing the concession and to Leanne Bertschy for helping work the concession.
The junior high held elections for student council and we are happy to see such an enthusiastic group take on the leadership of our student body. The student union is now starting the Mom’s Pantry Fundraiser, students will be coming around with order forms or they are available on our website as well. Miloschool.ca
Our student council worked hard planning fun activities for our Halloween Celebration at the Milo School. Thanks to Barb and Ian Godkin for the donation of pumpkins for our students to carve into Jack-o’-lanterns.
We have already started preparations for our Remembrance Day Program which will be held in the Milo School gym on November 6 at 10:30, everyone is welcome.

VILLAGE OF
MILO
ALBERTA
Dear Residents & Ratepayers,
The contractor that was hired to complete the roadwork on 1st and 2nd Street West in Arrowwood will be returning within a matter of days to complete the project. We are hopeful that driveway access will be corrected back to a normal state of affairs, that proper grades and drainage swales will be installed before drainage becomes a significant issue. The Village of Arrowwood can appreciate the frustration that this delay has caused and it has tried to work with residents to accommodate all access concerns that required an immediate solution.
It appears that the Villages of Arrowwood and Milo have found a contractor to undertake some final infrastructure work for 2014. In Arrowwood, water and sewer services needs to be extended to the new Arrowwood Co-op development, along with some ditch grading and the installation of a new fire hydrant. In Milo, a water leak, a fire hydrant repair and some minor roadwork needs to be undertaken.
As mentioned last month, the workshop “Finding Agreement” was hosted by Arrowwood and Milo and considered by all who attended to be highly worthwhile. Although designed for municipal officials, it is available for other community groups and organizations. The facilitator, Barbara McNeil, works for the Alberta Energy Regulator but has a longstanding relationship with Alberta Municipal Affairs. She has over twenty years experience as a mediator across a wide range of issues, including senior trainer in the University of Calgary’s Conflict Resolution Program, with experience as a member of the Municipal Government Board and Federal Farm Debt Review Board. Arrowwood and Milo were happy to have participants from both villages, Vulcan County, Town of Vulcan, Village of Carmangay, and diverse range of community associations.
On October 2nd, the Village of Milo filed notice of appeal with Vulcan County and the Municipal Government Board (MGB) under section 690 of the Municipal Government Act. This appeal concerns a dispute with Vulcan County over a proposed residential subdivision development that it deems could have a detrimental impact on the village absent inter-municipal co-operation. As legislated, the MGB will open a hearing for this appeal within 60 days of notice being filed.
Sincerely,
Christopher Northcott Chief Administrative OfficerVILLAGE OF

The Planetary Science Journal, 3(1), (2022): 22, https://doi.org/10.3847/psj/ac4493.Europa is a premier target for advancing both planetary science and astrobiology, as well as for opening a new window into the burgeoning field of comparative oceanography. The potentially habitable subsurface ocean of Europa may harbor life, and the globally young and comparatively thin ice shell of Europa may contain biosignatures that are readily accessible to a surface lander. Europa's icy shell also offers the opportunity to study tectonics and geologic cycles across a range of mechanisms and compositions. Here we detail the goals and mission architecture of the Europa Lander mission concept, as developed from 2015 through 2020. The science was developed by the 2016 Europa Lander Science Definition Team (SDT), and the mission architecture was developed by the preproject engineering team, in close collaboration with the SDT. In 2017 and 2018, the mission concept passed its mission concept review and delta-mission concept review, respectively. Since that time, the preproject has been advancing the technologies, and developing the hardware and software, needed to retire risks associated with technology, science, cost, and schedule.K.P.H., C.B.P., E.M., and all authors affiliated with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory carried out this research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (grant No. 80NM0018D0004).
