Nitrous oxide fluxes in turfgrass: Effects of nitrogen fertilization rates and types
Urban ecosystems are rapidly expanding and their effects on atmospheric nitrous oxide (N[subscript]2O) inventories are unknown. Our objectives were to: 1) measure the magnitude, seasonal patterns, and annual emissions of N[subscript]2O in turfgrass; and 2) evaluate effects of fertilization with a high and low rate of urea N; 3) and urea and ammonium sulfate; on N[subscript]2O emissions in turfgrass. Nitrogen fertilizers were applied to turfgrass: 1) urea, high rate (UH; 250 kg N ha[superscript]-1 yr[superscript]-1); 2) urea, low rate (UL; 50 kg N ha[superscript]-1 yr[superscript]-1); and 3) ammonium sulfate, high rate (AS; 250 kg N ha[superscript]-1 y[superscript]-1); high N rates were applied in five split applications. Soil fluxes of N[subscript]2O were measured weekly for one year using static surface chambers and analyzing N[subscript]2O by gas chromatography. Fluxes of N2O ranged from 22 [Greek letter mu]g N[subscript]2O-N m[superscript]-2 h[superscript] -1 during winter to 407 [Greek letter mu]g N[subscript]2O-N m[superscript]-2 h[superscript] -1 after fall fertilization. Nitrogen fertilization increased N[subscript]2O emissions by up to 15 times within three days although the amount of increase differed after each fertilization; increases were greater when significant precipitation occurred within three days after fertilization. Cumulative annual emissions of N[subscript]2O-N were 1.65 kg ha[superscript -1] in UH, 1.60 kg ha[superscript] -1 in AS, and 1.01 kg ha[superscript]-1 in UL. Thus, annual N[subscript]2O emissions increased 63% in turfgrass fertilized at the high compared with the low rate of urea, but no significant effects were observed between the two fertilizer types. Results suggest that N-fertilization rates may be managed to mitigate N[subscript]2O emissions in turfgrass ecosystems

Famillen H*** (The H-Family) appeared in the second and third part of Teckningar utur hvardagslifvet (Sketches from Every-day Life), published anonymously in 1830–31. This début was an immediate success and the writer’s identity was soon revealed. Here Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865) presented the reader to a literary landscape previously unknown in Sweden. Ordinary contemporary milieus and characters are unerringly described through a quick prose easily varying from elevated to quiet and humouristic. Alongside of and often in opposition to romanesque conventions this book offered a new kind of realistic account. For the first time Famillen H*** now appeares in a critical edition. The text, based on the first edition, is preceded by an introduction presenting the creation and reception of the novel, and is followed by a commentary
Frost and Forest Stand Effects on the Population Dynamics of Asplenium scolopendrium
Our objective was to analyze which factors are critical for the dynamics of terrestrial Asplenium scolopendrium populations at the northern edge of its distribution. Therefore, a long-term study (1978–1999) on the performance and demography of this fern species has been carried out in three different forest stands (Picea sitchensis with Fagus sylvatica, P. sitchensis with thinning, and Fraxinus excelsior) in the Netherlands. We used the recorded demographic data to parameterize 37 transition matrices. The number of frost days in severe winters correlated closely with frond damage and resulted in increased mortality and retrogression. Landslip on the trench banks and intraspecific competition were also found to increase mortality. In the F. excelsior plot, plants grew faster and bigger, produced more fronds and formed a more closed fern cover than in the P. sitchensis stands, likely due to higher light levels. Life-table response experiments revealed that reproduction contributed greatly to the differences in projected population growth rates: reproduction was importantly higher in the F. excelsior and in the thinned P. sitchensis plots than in the P. sitchensis–F. sylvatica plot. These differences can be attributed to an initial difference in light climate and to the accumulation of F. sylvatica litter which reduced recruitment. Recruitment occurred on bare soil but also in open moss carpets. We expect that the fern Asplenium scolopendrium will profit at its northern distribution edge when severe winters will occur less frequently, which is one of the expectations for global climate change

Antennae reach end of basal 1/4 of elytra.</p> <p> <b>Remarks.</b> This species has a wide distribution, ranging from north and central Thailand over Sumatra to Borneo (the type series of <i>P. ardoini</i> is from central Thailand, the description of <i>P. velutinus</i> is based on a single specimen from Borneo, the holotype). Most specimens formerly identified as <i>P. ardoini</i> are smaller (body length 2.82–3.11 mm) than the specimens determined as <i>P. velutinus</i> later on. In the original description of <i>P. velutinus</i> it was stated that in addition to the larger size the mesotibiae are more bent than in <i>P. ardoini</i>, and the antennomere XI is allusively longer in <i>P. ardoini</i>. After seeing more specimens from Borneo, but also from Thailand and Sumatra, we are no longer convinced that <i>P. velutinus</i> is really different from <i>P. ardoini</i>. Most specimens of <i>P. ardoini</i> from Thailand are indeed smaller than those from Borneo (specimens from Sumatra are mostly in between); however, the other characters are not so obviously different that one may assign specimens to one or the other taxon. Effects of high temperature and drought on a hybrid bluegrass compared with Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue
High temperature and drought stresses may reduce quality in cool-season turfgrasses during summer months in the transition zone. This growth chamber study was conducted to evaluate effects of high temperature and drought on physiology and growth of ‘Apollo’ Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) (KBG), ‘Dynasty’ tall fescue (Festuca arundincea Schreb.) (TF), and ‘Thermal Blue’, a hybrid (HBG) between KBG and Texas bluegrass (Poa arachnifera Torr.). Turfgrasses were exposed for 48 days to supra-optimal (high temperature; 35/25[degree]C, 14-h day/10-h night) and optimal (control; 22/15oC, 14-h day/10-h night) temperatures under well-watered (100% evapotranspiration [ET] replacement) and deficit (60% ET replacement) irrigation. Heat resistance was greater in HBG, which had greater visual quality, gross photosynthesis (P[subscript]g), dry matter production, and lower electrolyte leakage and soil-surface temperatures than KBG and TF under high temperature. Cumulative Pg during the study was 16% and 24% greater in HBG than in KBG and TF, respectively. Green leaf area index (LAI) in HBG was not affected by high temperature, but LAI was reduced by 29 % in KBG and 38% in TF. Differences in drought resistance were negligible among species. The combination of high temperature and drought caused rapid declines in visual quality and dry matter production, but HBG generally performed better.
