Predictive model for seismic vulnerability assessment of churches based on the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake
Seismic events that struck Italy in the last years had a dramatic impact on historical and cultural heritage. Damage occurred on existing masonry buildings, in particular on churches, stressed out the need to better understand the seismic behaviour of this type of constructions as well as to define more appropriate mitigation strategies to be applied at large scale.
This study deals with a predictive methodology for vulnerability assessment of churches in large territorial areas. Focusing the attention on three naves churches of Abruzzi, the paper proposes modifications and integrations of an existing methodology taken by literature. These modifications are defined through a calibration procedure based on damage observation of 64 three naves churches located at different distances from the epicentre of the 2009 earthquake. The proposed model is employed to predict damage level distribution for different earthquake intensities, allowing fragility curves to be plotted and therefore potential damage scenarios to be represented
Public bodies, private moments : method acting and American cinema in the 1950s
The thesis deals with two central issues:
a) the construction of a framework for the study of film acting which places
performance in a cultural context
b) the cultural significance of Method acting during the 1950s with specific
reference to American cinema of the period
The first chapter considers the ways in which the voice and body in film acting are made
meaningful in the context of beliefs about acting and personal identity. The chapter also
proposes ways for situating the practical activity of film acting in a context of cultural
production.
The remaining chapters study the cultural significance of Method acting through
separate analyses of the Method technique, style, representation of gender, and image of
star performance. Readings of the Method technique and style are placed in the context of
a `culture of personality', in which the significance of the Method was produced in the
ways that acting signified beliefs about personal identity. The discussion of the Method
style is then developed in the analysis of the ways in which the style was used in film
melodramas to represent the gendered anxieties of the rebel hero. Finally, Marlon
Brando's image and performances are studied for how the actor personified the meaning
of the Method. Together, technique, style, gender representation, and stardom, are
studied as various aspects of what is called the Method discourse
Hyperspectral aerial images. A valuable tool for submerged vegetation recognition in the Orbetello lagoons, Italy

Assessment of environmental management effects in a shallow water basin using mass-balance models.
Comparative analysis of trophic networks was carried out to evaluate environmental management actions aimed at countering\ud
an environmental crisis in Orbetello Lagoon, Italy. Two mass-balance models of this shallow water coastal system\ud
were constructed, for 1995 and 1996. During this period, there was an observed change in the composition of the submerged\ud
vegetation that indicated a significant improvement in the lagoon’s ecology. Mass-balance models were built using\ud
the Ecopath modelling software in order to explain the energy transfer through the trophic levels (TLs) of the lagoon’s ecosystem.\ud
Comparative analysis of the two trophic networks allowed a complete description of the lagoon, and gave clear indications\ud
regarding the ‘eutrophication level’ sensu Nixon and the stage of system maturity sensu Odum of the ecosystem for the 2 years.\ud
The turnover rate (production/biomass ratio) of pleustophytes was proposed as an indicator of “environmental health” at the\ud
ecosystem level because it allows positioning the submerged vegetation as a whole along an axis of adaptation strategies to\ud
natural selection. All the indices of ecosystem maturity and stability examined showed that the lagoon was in a more stable\ud
condition in 1996 than in 1995, although the system was still in a condition of stress.\ud
The effects of management actions carried out in the system were quantified by estimating the changes in primary production\ud
and accumulation of detritus in the system. Management of the lagoon as an extensive aquaculture operation was assessed by\ud
analysing the fishery catch, the transfer efficiencies at different trophic levels and the impact of cormorants, and it was found to\ud
contribute to system stability

Simplified Assessment of the Seismic Vulnerability of Churches After the 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake
The Italian cultural heritage is made of a large number of valuable historical masonry constructions characterized by several chronological, typological, constructive and structural peculiarities. Old masonry churches surely are the most important asset of this heritage. Lessons learnt from past earthquakes emphasize the necessity to establish effective methodologies for the seismic vulnerability assessment at large scale and for defining possible risk mitigation strategies. Based on this premise, this paper aims at calibrating a procedure for assessing a vulnerability index of churches. This procedure is based on the damage provoked by the 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake, with particular reference to three nave churches located in Sulmona-Valva and L’Aquila Dioceses in Abruzzi. In a first step, the damage scenario provoked by the considered event is presented in terms of Damage Probability Matrices. Then, a procedure for assessing the expected damage is properly calibrated in order to reproduce the real damage scenarios observed on the churches under investigation. After its calibration, the model is applied to define suitable fragility curves
