MANAGING THE CHALLENGES OF SUCCESSION PLANNING IN FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES IN NIGERIA

The alarming rate of the failure of Family-owned Businesses (FOBs) in Nigeria after the demise of the founders has been attracting the attention of scholars, administrators and management gurus for some time. This paper studies the challenges FOBs face in transiting from one generation to another. The study argues that despite the problem of the skills to run the inherited estate by the offspring of the departed founder, there are other fundamental impediments worth attention. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to open new ground for researchers to study the failure of FOBs to transit from one generation to another in Nigeria from a different angle. This study identifies the reasons for the problem of succession within FOBs to lie in the culture, religion and the laws of the land. The study concludes that one way of avoiding the intractable failures of FOBs is to adopt modern methods of inheriting a business through the same cultural, religious and legal tenets. This is a radical departure from other scholarly articles that have been emphasizing offspring skills, lack of synergy and management capabilities. The argument is that successful succession planning requires the modification of our inheritance system from the traditional to the modern one

THE NEED FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE

    Get PDF
Communication is central to the day-to-day running of organizations. No organization can function or survive without one form of communication or the other. Thus, the effectiveness of a public organization in delivering its schedules depends on decisions taken through a series of channels of communication, which may be written, verbal, visual, or documentary form. Rules are set, decisions taken and goals implemented and achieved through effective communication. The difference between the success and failure of organizations is in effective communication. This paper discusses the numerous means of communication, such as letter writing, minuting, minute recording, memorandum, briefs, visual and communication audio, etc. used in the public service. It recommends for the public servant use simple and precise messages (either written, visual or verbal) that can be understood by the receiver/reader. The paper discourages complicated communication by using jargon or rhetorical statements. The argument is that simplicity and concise messaging are essential to public service communication

The Political Murder of a Theocratic Leader, Muhammad Yusuf: Boko Haram’s Jihadist-Inspired Uprising in Nigeria

This paper is a critical study of Boko Haram's strategy of avenging the killing of its leader, Muhammed Yusuf, while under the custody of the Nigerian Police Force on July 30, 2009, in Maiduguri, Borno State, and the pursuit of its jihadist agenda. This specific killing turned a relatively peaceful religious propagandizing group into one of the most brutal and deadly in the world. Boko Haram’s transformation from a peaceful religious activity to a violent anti-establishment movement led to the widespread killing of security forces and innocent citizens through suicide bombings, assassinations, kidnappings and the destruction of properties worth billions of Naira. Initially, the security personnel, whom the group identified as responsible for the death of its leader, were the main target before the uprising expanded into a “holy war” consuming the whole nation. Boko Haram’s strategy is an unislamic offshoot of the ideas of jihadist scholars, who propagated extremist religious tenets for the transformation of society into an Islamic one. This has not been studied in depth by scholars and commentators, who have rather paid more attention to the insurgents' historical origins, foreign allies, support and open battle with the Nigerian military. The insurgents’ bombing of security facilities, markets, mosques, schools, and churches led to the deaths of many and the destruction of property. Such a misguided strategy, which is the outcome of the influence of jihadist scholars’ sermons transmitted through legends, books, social media outlets and lectures, has led to the loss of lives, a high number of deserters and demoralized the security forces, and put fear in the minds of citizens, leading to mass migration and the setting up of internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

THE POLITICAL SYMBOLISM OF UNMARKED GRAVES: THE KILLING AND SECRET BURIAL OF THE NIGERIAN LEADER OF BOKO HARAM, MUHAMMAD YUSUF

Fewscholarly articles show interest in the study and impact of the dead-on politics and society, especially in Nigeria. This paper is a breakaway from the norm into an unharnessed field of political inquiry, the perceived possible influence of the dead. History shows that the socio-economic standing of an individual shapes the final disposition of his body either in a marked or an unmarked grave. The dead has now overridden ideological significance in domestic and international politics. Some were given recognition and respect even in death by having deserving monuments, as witnessed in Ancient Egypt, for example, while others died with their history completely erased and buried with them in an unknown or unmarked place for fear of influencing the living. Thisessay discusses the strategies adopted in disposing the dead body ofMuhammad Yusuf, the leader of Boko Haramin an unmarked and unknown graveyard outside Maiduguri, Borno State and its political implication. This research uses the public safety theory to explain the denial of a burial ground to the leader of Boko haram, Muhammad Yusuf

Public Sector Reforms and Anti-Corruption Policies in Nigeria

    No full text
This study examines how public sector reforms and anti-corruption policies and agencies were implemented and established in Nigeria from colonial times to the present. Using the hybrid theoretical framework that incorporates institutional, principal-agent and social norms theories, the paper closely studies the policies and institutions that different governments used to fight corruption. These include early actions like the Foster-Sutton Tribunal (1956), the Recovery of Public Property Decree, 1984, the establishment of the Code of Conduct Bureau, 1979, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission, (2000), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (2003) and recent reforms like the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act, (2022) and the Digital Asset Management Systems started by President Tinubu (2024). While these initiatives reflect a consistent policy commitment to transparency and accountability, the study points out ongoing challenges, such as elite impunity, political interference, weak enforcement, lack of institutional continuity, overlapping roles and limited public confidence. Despite some good efforts, Nigeria's fight against corruption has often been weakened by societal norms and structural contradictions. The study concludes by proposing a holistic approach to reform and strengthen anti-corruption agencies to ensure judicial independence and foster a culture of accountability across all the levels of government. This study adds to the broader discourse on governance in Nigeria by offering a theory-based analysis of reform paths and their different results based on political history. Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
