Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
In response to environmental and public health issues, sensors for toxic and/or polluting gases are at the core of extensive research and innovation. Therefore, their development is important and also a major challenge for society. Up to date for gas sensing applications, metal oxide chemiresistive sensors are the most widely investigated devices thanks to their ease in fabrication, simplicity of operation, and facile integration in miniaturization. However, their high working temperature restricts their implementation in the wearable, flexible devices. Two-dimensional (2D) materials possess great potential in serving as a gas-sensing layer in wearable gas sensors due to their excellent mechanical flexibility, large specific surface areas, strong surface activities with a high gas sensitivity. Among this family, transition metal chalcogenides (TMDs), such as molybdenum disulfides (MoS2), exhibit outstanding properties thanks to its tunable band gap, and are also promising candidates for the detection of toxic gas at room temperature. This thesis aims to fabricate and optimize nitrogen dioxide (NO2) chemiresistive gas sensors based on solution-processed 2D MoS2. The first step in the work involved the development and the optimization of liquid phase exfoliation process to produce colloidal suspensions of MoS2 nanosheets on a large scale. In parallel, we assessed vacuum-assisted filtration and liquid/liquid interfacial self-assembly as two thin film fabrication techniques from individual nanosheets. Besides 2D MoS2 dispersion production and thin film processing, a multiscale physicochemical characterization of the produced MoS2 through microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, coupled with electrical measurements was conducted to determine the optimal exfoliation conditions to obtain MoS2 nanosheets and the morphologies of thin films produced by two distinct deposition processes. Then, MoS2 thin film fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration with gold interdigitated electrodes on top were assessed for NO2 gas sensing, which exhibited a moderate sensitivity to a low NO2 concentration down to 1 ppm at room temperature. However, full recovery of NO2 sensing cannot always be achieved due to the MoS2 NSs atom vacancies generated during liquid shear exfoliation. To solve this issue, we passivated these vacancies on MoS2 nanosheets with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The functionalization of MoS2 nanosheets with Au NPs improved the sensitivity towards NO2 and lowered the recovery time compared to bare MoS2 sensor
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Functionalized Graphene Based Materials for Gas Sensing and Catalytic Water Decontamination Applications
There is growing interest in chemical sensors and catalysts to ensure air and water quality. For example, chemical sensors, particularly those designed to detect gases, play an essential role in monitoring air quality, while catalysts accelerate the reduction of pollutants in water. Among the promising materials for these applications, graphene stands out for its high electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, low electrical noise and ability to transport electrons. Graphene has been identified as a better platform for chemical detection of different gases, with enhanced sensitivity. As a result, graphene has become a preferred material for the development of low-cost, room-temperature gas sensors and heterogeneous catalysts aimed at improving pollutant reduction. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to develop an ultrasensitive and selective gas sensor based on functionalized graphene for the detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Graphene was prepared using two approaches: i) graphene (mono- and multilayer) synthesized by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition and ii) graphene (multilayer) prepared by liquid-phase chemical exfoliation. The graphene layers thus obtained were used to develop resistive gas sensors on porous paper. To improve the sensitivity, selectivity, response and recovery times of these sensors, the graphene surface was non-covalently functionalized with porphyrins (Co/Fe-porphyrin) and phthalocyanines (Fe-phthalocyanine). Graphene-based gas sensors on paper exhibit high sensitivity (in the order of a few ppb (parts per billion)) to NO2. Non-covalent functionalization of the graphene increases sensitivity, selectivity, response and reset times. These sensors are repeatable, stable, reproducible, flexible and compatible with large-scale manufacturing. In parallel with this study, we developed 'graphene-polyethyleneimine-metal nanoparticle' heterostructures, which were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the reduction of various organic pollutants. These 'graphene-polyethyleneimine-metal nanoparticles' heterostructures revealed exceptional catalytic activity for the complete reduction of various hazardous organic micropollutants. These included 4-nitrophenol, rhodamine B, nitropyrene, nitrofen and dinitrotoluene. These reactions were carried out in the presence of excess sodium borohydride, and were completed in just a few minute
Study of corrosion properties of radiofrequency cold plasma nitrided carbon steel
The aim of this work concerns the study of the improvement of the corrosion resistance in acidic medium (1M HCl) and mechanical properties of carbon steel (XC38) using a radiofrequency cold plasma nitriding process. The originality of this work consists in nitriding substrates using nitrogen cold plasma, where the process temperature is roughly ambient temperature and without heating the substrate. The nitriding was carried using nitrogen and nitrogen/ hydrogen plasma gas mixtures. The hydrogen role in the plasma consists not only in reducing the iron oxide layer on the substrate, but also accelerates the nitrogen diffusion in the substrate. Surface characterizations performed by means of the Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that the treatment plasma induces the formation of a layer where the nitrided thickness is higher than ten microns for long treatment times (8h). The mechanical properties were studied by Vickers microhardness. The surface microhardness of the nitrided steel increases as the plasma processing time increases to reach a maximum of 1057Hv0.005 for the nitrided sample that was treated during 8h, when compared to sample untreated (247Hv0.005). The improvement of the corrosion resistance properties were investigated by gravimetric and electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 1M HCl medium. For the optimal conditions of treatment, the inhibition efficiency obtained is more than 95 % for 8h of treatment and remains constant for immersion times higher than 72h in aggressive medium (HCl 1M)
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
