Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2010.A Rehabilitation centre for children with cerebral palsy is the proposed project undertaken in this dissertation. This theme was chosen after the author had been involved with New Hope School in fundraising projects for the past 3 years. The author recognized the need of a dedicated rehabilitation facility for children with cerebral palsy as well as better accommodation for rehabilitation purposes. Spending time with cerebral palsied children, the need for basic education becomes evident. Over protectiveness from parents could prevent these children from sensory experiences, which can only be evolved through touching, smelling, seeing hearing and tasting. This early childhood experience of sensory development usually involves play. Play is the ultimate form of exploration for any child and when disabled, free play is usually non-associative with everyday activities. Without free play, children will have a handicap in natural development of social, mental, physical and sensory skills. Through harmless play, even a lion cub learns to become a hunter. The aim of this project would be to create a center where play would be used to rehabilitate children with cerebral palsy. New Hope School is situated in the Menlopark area, Pretoria. The proposed site for the rehabilitation centre would be consolidated to the north western corner of the existing school grounds and thus engaging this project as an addition to the existing New Hope School. The architecture used, should be of simplistic nature which merges the interiors of the building with nature. By achieving this, the children would get a basic form of sensory development while rehabilitating in the building. CopyrightArchitectureunrestricte

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Effect of Substrate on Proliferation and Differentiation of Stem Cells: Discertation

BACKGROUND Limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs) have been localized to the palisades of Vogt and serve as a source for continuous renewal of the corneal epithelium. LESCs can be destroyed as a result of tumours or autoimmune, traumatic, congenital, infectious or iatrogenic causes, which all lead to limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). The results are neovascularisation, chronic inflammation as well as opacification of the cornea with symptoms of discomfort, pain, photophobia, and severely reduced vision. The most widely accepted treatment of LSCD with corneal opacification is corneal transplantation in conjunction with cultured limbal epithelium transplantation (CLET). Novel stromal substitutes together with optimized CLET procedures hold great promise for the treatment of this clinically challenging disease modality. Transplantation of LESCs is, however, hampered by the fragility of the epithelium and a cell carrier is therefore required. Several different carrier solutions have been investigated, including amniotic membrane, which is currently the golden standard, collagen scaffolds, and siloxane hydrogel contact lenses, all with varying results.AIM The aim of this project was to investigate and compare cell adhesion, proliferation and maintenance of stem cell potential of stem cells on natural and synthetic substrates that would support differentiation towards corneal phenotype in a serum- and feeder-free system.METHODS In this project, growth and morphology of stem cells on intact amniotic membrane, epithelially denuded amniotic membrane, acellular amniotic membrane, plastic compressed collagen membrane, CCC and PIPAA culture dishes was evaluated on adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) as a model for LESCs. In addition, limbal epithelial cells (LECs) were isolated from corneoscleral rims with either Dispase or collagenase and grown in a xeno- and feeder-free system.RESULTS ASCs were capable of attaching to all of the tested substrates within 24 hours of seeding. ASCs on dAM and aAM displayed the largest proliferation rate (p < 0,05), while there was no significant difference between the other substrates and controls after three days of culturing. Furthermore, greater numbers of LECs could be isolated from corneoscleral rings with collagenase than with Dispase, however viability of donor tissue posed some problems.CONCLUSION Results from ASCs as a model for stem cell growth on substrates suggests its importance in regulation specific cell features, such as morphology and proliferation. Viability of donor tissue, however, posed a problem and LECs could not be grown on the substrates. It is therefore important to conduct more research on this subject.<br/

CITATION: Botha, J. 2020. Lessons from Mr. Noki : empire, structural violence and the Missio Dei, in Nel, M. J., Forster, D. A. & Thesnaar, C. H. (eds.) 2020. Reconciliation, forgiveness and violence in Africa : biblical, pastoral and ethical perspectives. Stellenbosch: SUN PReSS, doi:10.18820/9781928480532/06.The original publication is available from AFRICAN SUNMeDIA - www.sun-e-shop.co.zaOn the 16th of August 2012, 34 mineworkers were killed by police in a conflict between Lonmin’s Marikana2 mine management and their workforce (Botha & Forster, 2017). The leader of the striking miners, Mgecineni Noki,3 died that day after advocating for basic increases and a more dignified life. This event has been likened to the Sharpeville4 of the new South Africa.5 The situation was a boiling pot consisting of a multinational company seeking best financial return at the expense of the dignity of mine workers, radicalised unions, militarised police and the misuse of political power, which resulted in violent and blatant murder as uncovered by the Farlam Commission6 (Botha & Forster, 2017). What preceded this event is a clear example of structural violence,7 and the subsequent strike was a reaction to this manifestation of violence. Mgecineni Noki’s life of struggle and his inhumane death have come to serve as a symbol for all those who have lost their lives in such conflicts, as well as those who are still held captive by an unjust social, political and economic system. This chapter does not aim to go into detail about Mr. Noki’s life, but use his social location as a lens to critique church8 engagement in issues of violence that undermine the dignity of the most vulnerable peoples.Publisher's versio
