Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

This research investigates part of the trajectory of the author Domingos Ribeiro Filho (1875-1942) in the Careta’s magazine, published in Rio de Janeiro. Collaborated with his writings in this magazine between 1911 and 1934 — a collaboration that has not been studied today — the work consisted of analyzing the first years (1924-1925) of his work in a specific column, titled "Looping the loop", in which his chronicles addressed issues of everyday life, while constituting a privileged space for the exercise of his anarchist political militancy. The central axis of the research is precisely the analysis of the strategies employed by the author, in order to articulate it’s political-ideological idea by addressing different aspects of the reality lived in the 1920s in the Federal Capital. Careta’s magazine was of the best known at the time, which combined political, social and customs criticism with satire in its pages — starting with the cartoons often printed as an illustration on its covers — intends to investigates the meanings of the political militancy of the author of the chronicles published in the column in question, examining the conditions and networks of relationships that made possible its presence in a vehicle of the press of great circulation at the time. In the case of a research developed in the field of the social history of literature, the theoretical assumption adopted implies conceiving the literary text in a dialectical and materialistic perspective. That is, it is understood that the chronicle is one of the ways in which the author participates in the movement of history and interferes with its literary production, which is at the same time determined by the most varied factors of the reality in which it is produced — as authors such as Raymond Williams and Antonio Candido, among others. Therefore, it is interesting to explore in this research the potential of these chronicles as a document and source for the history of Brazil in the last decade of the First Republic.Não recebi financiament

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

This article is the analysis of a short story written by Lima Barreto (1881-1922), entitled "The Journalist", published in Souza Cruz magazine in 1921, as it presents a discussion on the ways and means of doing journalism during the First Republic. Being the literature a source and a kind of document, the meaning of this publication is investigated, as well as its relationship to other texts of this author aiming to understand how the struggles in the world of media were revealed then. These are partial results of a research conducted in the field of social history of culture, considering the theoretical contributions of E. P. Thompson and Raymond Williams.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    No full text

Cordel literature and history teaching: dialogues and possibilities in elementary school

    No full text
The objective of this research is to investigate the possibilities of using cordel literature in history teaching, in the final years of elementary school. The research focused on the production of cordel leaflets in Northeastern Brazil, since its appearance, at the end of the 19th century, until the 1920s, a period in which the pioneering poets of our cordel literature were active. After discussing the emergence of cordel literature and its characteristics and precursors, we began to discuss the proposals and possibilities of working with the leaflets in the teaching of history. It was highlighted that the use of cordel literature in history classes can favor interdisciplinarity, creativity, the development of reading skills, orality and collective work. A documentary corpus of 35 leaflets was selected and analyzed, with themes from Brazilian history during the First Republic such as: rural social movements, rebellions,Brazil's participation in the Great War, social inequalities, economic problems, elections, politics, cangaço, customs , religiosity, etc. The results of the research pointed out that cordel leaflets are a privileged historical source that can contribute substantially to the teaching of history, providing a dialogue with the historical knowledge of textbooks and historiography. The use of cordel in history classes can enrich them and make them more attractive and stimulating, contributing to more significant teaching-learning experiences.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES
