Optimal Slot Height in the Jet Cooling of a Circular Cylinder
Experimental results are presented for heat transfer cooling of an electrically heated circular cylinder, of diameter D=10 mm, by a slot jet, of height S=2.5 mm, i.e. with D/S=4. Mean and local Nusselt numbers are presented versus the Reynolds numbers, the distance of the cylinder from the slot exit, H, and the angle from the impinging point. Mean Nusselt numbers, defined according to the cylinder diameter, D, are higher than the values in an infinite flow. The maximum mean Nusselt number is measured when the cylinder is set at a distance H, from the slot exit, such that H/S=8. The minimum local Nusselt number is measured at an angle of 180° from the impinging point, i.e. on the rear of the cylinder. Comparisons have been done among the mean Nusselt numbers of this work and previous experimental results of the same authors, carried out with diameter to slot height ratios equal to D/S=1 and 2. The conclusion is that the mean Nusselt number, defined as , is higher for D/S=4, versus the Reynolds number, defined as ReD=WD/ν. On the contrary, the mean Nusselt number, defined on the basis of the slot height, , has similar values, for the different slot heights, versus the Reynolds number, defined as ReS=WS/ν, with the trend of higher results for the slot with D/S=2
La casa delle religioni di Torino: un esempio di progetto «multi-level», tra religioso e secolare
Turin has a long history of religious diversity, especially migration-driven. After suffering persecutions and socio-spatial reclusion, during the second half of nineteenth century its historical minorities celebrated their emancipation with the construction of outstanding temples. Today, the city faces an unprecedented diversification of its religious field. In order to face religious spatial needs, the city council issued a call for proposals to provide the town with a multi-faith space dedicated to local minorities. The project of a Casa delle religioni was selected in 2016. A three-year participative process involved twenty religious organizations in the common definition of needs, practices, and wills about the common use of space. At the end of the process, the project included an Orthodox chapel and a muṣallā for the two main minority communities, as well as an adaptive main hall for other communities and public activities, a library, and a space for study and research
On the Cooling Effect of an Air Jet Along the Surface of a Cylinder
Heat transfer of slot jets of air impinging on the surface of a circular cylinder by forced convection has been investigated. The cylinder has a diameter of D=10 mm and the slot jet has a height of S=5 mm. The thermocouples, located along the surface of the cylinder, at various angles from the impinging point, allow the evaluation of the local convective heat transfer coefficients. The experiments have been performed for a Reynolds number of the impinging air ranging from Re=4000 to Re=20000. The influence of the distance H, between the exit of the slot jet and the cylinder, has been investigated in the range of H/S, H/S=2–10. The local Nusselt number is a function of the H/S ratio and of the angle from the front impinging point. It is also dependent on the Reynolds number
Differences in gene expression levels and in enzymatic qualities account for the uneven contribution of superoxide dismutases SodCI and SodCII to pathogenicity in Salmonella enterica
Most Salmonella enterica serovars produce two periplasmic [Cu,Zn] superoxide dismutases, SodCI, which is prophage encoded, and SodCII, encoded by a conserved chromosomal gene. Both enzymes were proposed to enhance Salmonella virulence by protecting bacteria against products of macrophage oxidative burst. However, we previously found SodCI, but not SodCII, to play a role during mouse infection by S. enterica serovar Typhimurium. Here we have extended these findings to another serovar of epidemiological relevance: sv Enteritidis. In both serovars, the dominant role of SodCI in virulence correlates with its higher levels in bacteria proliferating in mouse tissues, relative to SodCII. To analyze the basis of these differences, the coding sequences of sodCI and sodCII genes were exchanged with the reciprocal 5'-regions (in serovar Typhimurium). The accumulation patterns of the two proteins in vivo were reversed as a result, indicating that the regulatory determinants lie entirely within the regions upstream from the initiation codon. In the construct with the sodCI gene fused to the sodCII 5'-region, SodCl contribution to virulence was reduced but remained significant. Thus, both, high-level expression and some unidentified qualities of the enzyme participate in the phenotypic dominance of SodCI over SodCII in Salmonella pathogenicity. (c) 2006 Elsevier SAS. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
