Combining Discourse Representation Theory with FrameNet
No full textDiscourse Representation Theory (DRT) by and large ignores the issue
of thematic roles. We have investigated the possibilities of combining
DRT with thematic roles such as those from FrameNet, both from a
theoretical and practical perspective. We show that a neo-Davidsonian
version of DRT matches best with FrameNet's intentions, but also
demonstrate that not all FrameNet roles can be meaningfullly expressed
in the representation language of DRT, in particular those introduced by adverbs. Using a wide-coverage implementation of DRT, we present an algorithm for learning FrameNet roles and adding these to the meaning representations produced by a state-of-the-art wide coverage parser
Cross-Lingual Question Answering by Answer Translation
No full textWe approach cross-lingual question answering by using a mono-lingual QA system for
the source language and by translating resulting answers into the target language.
As far as we are aware, this is the first cross-lingual QA system in the history of
CLEF that uses this method—all other cross-lingual QA systems known to us use
translation of the question or query instead. We demonstrate the feasibility of this
approach by using a mono-lingual QA system for English, and translating answers
and finding appropriate documents in Italian and Dutch. For factoid and definition questions, we achieve overall accuracy scores ranging from 13% (EN->NL) to 17% (EN->IT) and lenient accuracy figures from 19% (EN->NL) to 25% (EN->IT). The
advantage of this strategy to cross-lingual QA is that translation of answers is easier
than translating questions—the disadvantage is that answers might be missing from
the source corpus and additional effort is required for finding supporting documents of
the target language
