Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Dealing with the Past in the process of democratization in Guatemala (1990-2007)
No full textIst die Politik zur Vergangenheit in Guatemala eine Quelle des Friedens oder der demokratischen Transformation gewesen? Oder war sie doch ein Hindernis für sie? Wie sah zunächst einmal der offizielle Umgang mit ihr aus? Um welche Werte und Motive ging es hinter den Kulissen und welche Kunstgriffe wandten die Regierungen an, die dem Blick zurück seinen transformatorischen Charakter nehmen sollten?
Nach jahrelanger Feldforschung auf der Basis von insgesamt 235 Interviews mit Vertretern aus Regierungen, Militär, Guerilla und Maya Bewegung (u.a.) versucht der Autor einen Spagat. Er will einerseits empirisch die Politik zur Aufarbeitung der Vergangenheit nachvollziehen und diese in einen breiten Kontext der (Gewalt-) Krise des Staates stellen – der Straflosigkeit und der allgemeinen Kriminalisierung. Ausführlich wird darum der Fortgang in der Sicherheits- und Justizpolitik beleuchtet. Aber er will auch versuchen, das umstrittene Verhältnis von Demokratierung und der Politik zur Gewalt der Vergangenheit in Guatemala einer Revision zu unterziehen. Und das geht nicht – ganz – ohne theoretischen Rahmen.
Guatemala ist ein Land, in dem demokratische Fort- und Rückschritte parallel stattfinden. Noch bevor der Umgang mit der Vergangenheit als Regierungspolitik definiert wurde, hat er nach massiven Menschenrechtsverletzungen im Kriege, eine Dynamik aus Frieden und Demokratie mit angeschoben, die am 29. Dezember 1996 ihren Abschluss fand. Aber gleichzeitig hat dieser Erfolg – vor allem über die Möglichkeit der Prozesse – dem dann folgenden Prozess auch Belastungen vererbt.
Die Arbeit zeigt einen mühsamen und widersprüchlichen Prozess des Kulturwandels, der immer wieder mal am Sinn der Politik zur Vergangenheit zweifeln lässt, aber doch auch schon Perspektiven einer Transformation aufzeigt. Skepsis überwiegt nach der Beobachtung von Strafprozessen und dem Ringen um Wahrheit und Wiedergutmachung. Aber mehr als jede einzelne konkrete Maßnahme ist es die reine Möglichkeit der Strafverfolgung, sein Potential, das repressive Mächte destabilisiert und damit gleichzeitig Reformen zum Durchbruch verhilft. Und dann ist da auch das unerwartete Spannungsfeld mit der Emanzipation der Indigenen.
Auf theoretischer Ebene bestätigt die Forschung zunächst etwas, was schon Barahona formuliert hatte. Es gibt keine direkte Korrelation zwischen der Vergangenheitspolitik und dem Fortgang der Demokratierung. Aber auch das hängt von dem Verständnis des Wortes „direkt“ ab. In ihrer Funktion als Instrument und Katalysator politischer Prozesse hat die Vergangenheitspolitik in Guatemala nämlich doch eine, zwar indirekte, aber klare Beziehung zur demokratischen Transformation. Sie fördert die zivile Regierungsgewalt und schwächt damit eben auch den Kultureinfluss, den es zugunsten der Demokratisierung zu überwinden gilt. Strafverfahren, die schon im Rahmen der Transition beginnen, erwiesen sich als ausgesprochen widersprüchlich, aber eine letztendliche Störung scheinen sie nicht. Wie der Prozess im Detail in Guatemala verlaufen ist und welche spezifischen Effekte er verursacht hat, das kann man in teils "packend" beschriebenen Umständen nachlesen.Has the way Guatemala deals with its past been a source for democratic transformation? And how did its official policy look like? Which values and motives acted behind the scene? And what kind of tricks was employed by governments to handle the possible impacts of the back word looking measures? After several years of field research, based on 235 interviews with representatives of governments, military, guerilla, Mayan and human rights movement (etc.), the author tries to do the splits. On the one hand he wants to describe the official politics of Dealing with the Past in the context of the arise of a criminal state, which means wide spreading impunity and general criminalization. On the other hand, using the example of Guatemala, he wants to continue specifying the sometimes controversial relationship between democratization and the policy of Dealing with the Past. Democratic theory will be a necessary tool, but the results go far beyond
