Code choice and code-switching in Swiss-German internet relay chat rooms
In the German-speaking regions of Switzerland, dialect is spoken by all social groups in most communicative situations, Standard German being used only when prescribed. Swiss dialects rarely appeared in written form before the 1980s, apart from the genre of dialect literature. Due to the growing acceptance of informal writing styles in many European languages, dialect is increasingly employed for written personal communication, in particular in computer-mediated communication (CMC). In Swiss Internet Relay Chat (IRC) rooms, varieties of German are used side by side as all chatters have a command of both standard and dialectal varieties. Depending on the channel, the proportion of dialectal contributions can be as high as 90 percent. The choice of a particular variety depends on both individual preference and on the predominant variety used within a specific thread. In this paper I take a quantitative approach to language variation in IRC and demonstrate how such an approach can help embed qualitative research on code-switching in CMC
The role of beat gesture and pitch accent in semantic processing: An ERP study
The present study investigated whether and how beat gesture (small baton-like hand movements used to emphasize information in speech) influences semantic processing as well as its interaction with pitch accent during speech comprehension. Event-related potentials were recorded as participants watched videos of a person gesturing and speaking simultaneously. The critical words in the spoken sentences were accompanied by a beat gesture, a control hand movement, or no hand movement, and were expressed either with or without pitch accent. We found that both beat gesture and control hand movement induced smaller negativities in the N400 time window than when no hand movement was presented. The reduced N400s indicate that both beat gesture and control movement facilitated the semantic integration of the critical word into the sentence context. In addition, the words accompanied by beat gesture elicited smaller negativities in the N400 time window than those accompanied by control hand movement over right posterior electrodes, suggesting that beat gesture has a unique role for enhancing semantic processing during speech comprehension. Finally, no interaction was observed between beat gesture and pitch accent, indicating that they affect semantic processing independently. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
The BEAT: a youth gang prevention program
The purpose of this project was to develop an effective gang prevention program. A literature review on effective programs for vulnerable youth was used to design an after school gang prevention program. The program, named The BEAT, provides a flexible, youth-centred curriculum with the goal of reducing anti-social behaviours and building healthy relationships. The BEAT teaches interpersonal skills through discussions, activities, mentoring, life skill development and recreational opportunities. The program is designed to partner with family support programs and community agencies to create a wraparound approach to support vulnerable adolescent males, ages 11 to 14. Exploiting Necroptosis for Therapy of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Escape from chemotherapy-induced apoptosis is a hallmark of drug resistance in cancer. The recent identification of alternative programmed cell death pathways opens up for possibilities to circumvent the apoptotic blockade in drug resistant cancer and eliminate malignant cells. Indeed, we have recently shown that programmed necrosis, termed necroptosis, could be triggered to induce cell death in a subgroup of primary acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) including highly refractory relapsed cases. In this review we focus on molecular mechanisms that drive drug resistance in ALL of childhood and discuss the potential of necroptosis activation to eradicate resistant disease

The Thursday Murder Club: Launching a megabrand author - a publishing case study
In 2020, the Christmas book charts in the UK made headlines: Barack Obama’s eagerly awaited autobiography, The Promised Land, was beaten to the top spot by The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, a debut cosy crime novel set in a retirement village. Not only did Osman’s book beat the former US president’s expected bestseller, it also broke records, becoming the fastest-selling debut crime novel of all time. Although Osman has a certain level of fame in the UK from his TV appearances on shows such as Pointless, his celebrity status does not entirely explain the novel’s huge sales. This article tracks the acquisition, publication, and promotion journey of The Thursday Murder Club in order to understand the industry and cultural context of its success and to interrogate the role of celebrity in the creation of author brands. The findings suggest that the unexpected scale of the success of the book owed to a number of factors, including in-depth editing by the novel’s agent, editor, and author to tighten up the plot, an extensive and strategic promotional campaign, the pandemic (which drove interest in the book’s genre and themes), and the quality of the writing. We find that the book’s success was accentuated by Osman’s celebrity status rather than being entirely reliant on it. This research adds to the growing scholarship on celebrity authorship by means of an in-depth case study and provides insight into the processes behind publishing a ‘celebrity’ book and launching a megabrand author

Functional activities and cellular localization of the ezrin, radixin, moesin (ERM) and RING zinc finger domains in MIR
AbstractMyosin regulatory light chain interacting protein (MIR) belongs to the ezrin, radixin, moesin (ERM) family of proteins involved in membrane cytoskeleton interactions and cell dynamics. MIR contains, beside the ERM domain, a RING zinc finger region. Immunocytochemistry showed that full-length MIR and the subdomains localize differently in cells. Cell fractionation revealed a similar distribution of full-length MIR and the RING domain protein in the Triton X-100-insoluble fraction. The neurite outgrowth inhibitory activity of MIR was attributed to the RING domain. MIR levels were controlled in the cells depending on the intact RING domain and proteasome activity. The dynamic regulation of MIR contributes to its effects on neurite outgrowth and cell motility
Mylip makes an Idol turn into regulation of LDL receptor
High blood low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is a serious health problem among an increased number of patients in the Western world. Statins and other cholesterol lowering drugs have proven to be beneficial as therapy but are not optimal and show adverse effects in some patients. The LDL receptor is a crucial determinant of cholesterol metabolism in the body and amenable for drug interventions. Novel insights into the physiology of this receptor come from studies on the ubiquitination and degradation of LDL receptor by the ubiquitin ligase Mylip/Idol that is induced in cells by the nuclear receptor, LXR. This may open up new possibilities in the future to influence LDL receptor levels and cholesterol metabolism pharmacologically in various diseases.</p
