Irinotecan in combination with new agents

    No full text
Today, irinotecan in combination with bolus and/or infusional 5-FU/FA constitutes a standard first-line treatment for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. In an attempt to further improve clinical outcome, the use of irinotecan in combination with novel, targeted agents has been investigated. The theoretical attraction of combining irinotecan with targeted therapies is that this can improve the efficacy of treatment, but, due to the mainly non-overlapping toxicities of the agents involved, the toxicity of treatment should not be exacerbated. In this article we discuss recent data from clinical studies looking at the combinations of irinotecan with the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) pro-drug, capecitabine, the cyclo-oxygenase (COX-2) inhibitor, celecoxib, and monoclonal antibodies against the epidermal growth factor receptor (cetuximab) and vascular endothelial growth factor (bevacizumab). © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Management of infusion reactions in clinical trials and beyond: the US and EU perspectives

    No full text
Monoclonal antibodies have expanded our cancer-fighting armamentarium in both the United States and Europe. While in general, monoclonal antibodies are well tolerated and do not have significant overlapping side effects with traditional cytotoxic agents, severe infusion reactions (IRs)--sometimes severe enough to be life threatening--have been reported. The pathophysiology of severe infusion reactions associated with monoclonal antibodies is poorly understood, but mechanisms are beginning to be elucidated. Geographic differences in the incidence of IRs have become apparent. Understanding the risk, recognizing the signs and symptoms, and being ready to promptly manage severe IRs are key for the clinician to avoid unnecessarily discontinuing these effective anticancer agents and prevent potentially tragic consequences for their patients. To date, clinical trials have incorporated monoclonal antibodies into combinations with standard cytotoxic regimens; it is expected that in time clinical trials will be testing promising new combinations utilizing multiple targeted agents, resulting in improved toxicity profiles and efficacy for cancer patients

Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing

    No full text
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories

Latviešu valodā. Darbā sintezēti jonu šķidrumi ar atšķirīgu to katjonu hidrofīlumu. Ar 1H KMR un 13C KMR metodi pierādīta struktūru pareizība un novērtēta to tīrība. Pārbaudīta to termiskā stabilitāte ar termogravimetrijas metodi. Sintezētajos jonu šķidrumos šķīdināta celuloze, un pārbaudīta to spēja ekstrahēt bioloģiski aktīvas vielas no augu valsts produktiem. The author Markus M., supervisor Dr. habil. chem., prof. Zicmanis A. Bachelor thesis, 47 pages, 22 figures, 14 tables, 36 literature references, 1 appendix. In Latvian. In this work, ionic liquids with various hydrophilicity of cation were synthesized. Reaction products and their purity were tested using 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The thermal stability of ionic liquids was investigated with thermogravimetry. Cellulose was dissolved in synthesized ionic liquids, and these ionic liquids were tested as eluents for the extraction of biologically active substances from plants. Against the background of the increasing medical and socioeconomic importance of acupuncture and laser acupuncture, the present work aims at outlining scientific and practical applications in fields related to preventive and rehabilitative sports medicine. These include, in particular, the treatment of acute and chronic sports injuries, the enhancement of physical performance, the promotion of recovery, as well as the prevention of exercise-induced asthma. Based on current research, the author presents his original investigations dealing with specific effects of acupuncture and laser acupuncture
