    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Die Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung von Mobilitätsmodellen für die realitätsnahe Simulation mobiler Ad-hoc-Netzwerke (MANETs). Das Hauptziel ist die Simulation von Nutzergruppen, die aus mehreren (5-10) Personen bestehen. Szenarios mit Gruppen dieser Größe finden sich z.B. in taktischen Netzen militärischer Anwendungen. Auch neueren Modelle betrachten die Simulation des Gruppenverhalten nur sehr eingeschränkt oder sie sind übermäßig vereinfachend, so dass diese Modelle keine qualitative Auswertung erlauben und kein Vergleich des simulierten Verhalten mit einer realen MANET-Umgebung möglich ist. Komplexere Modelle mit größerer Genauigkeit wurden vor allem für die Simulation von Fahrzeuge-zu-Fahrzeug-Netzen (VANETs) entwickelt. Diese Modelle sind von eingeschränktem Nutzen für die Simulation der Mobilität von Fußgängern, da sich die Bewegung von Fahrzeugen stark unterscheiden, insbesondere in Bezug auf die Geschwindigkeit und die Ausdehnung des zugänglichen Bereich. Darüber hinaus sind die neueren Bewegungsmodelle zunehmend komplex und daher schwer zu verstehen und anzuwenden. Daher ist es das Ziel der Diplomarbeit herauszufinden, ob es möglich ist ein (Gruppen-)Bewegungsmodell für Fußgänger zu erstellen, das leicht verständlich und nutzbar ist, aber trotzdem ein hinreichend hohes Maß an Detailtreue in Bezug auf das Gruppenverhalten bietet. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen werden Techniken der Schwarmintelligenz angewendet, da die Kerngedanken der Schwarmintelligenz eine gute Grundlage zur Lösung der dargestellten Probleme bieten. Des Weiteren werden die Leistungsfähigkeit und die Qualität der Simulationsergebnisse von bestehenden Modellen und von dem neu geschaffenen Modell bewertet und miteinander verglichen.The thesis deals with the development of mobility models for realistic simulation of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The main topic is the simulation of user groups, which consist of several (5-10) individuals. Scenarios with groups of that size include, for example tactical networks in military applications. Recent models have paid limited attention to the simulation of group behavior, or, have been overly simplistic, such that model behavior has not allowed qualitative assessment and comparison of the simulated MANET with real world performance. Advanced models, with sufficient level of detail, have mostly been developed for simulation of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). These models are of limited use for simulating pedestrian motion, which differs a lot from vehicle motion, especially concerning speed and the navigable area. Additionally recent models have become increasingly complex and are therefore hard to understand and use. Therefore, the goal of the thesis is to find out if it is possible to create a pedestrian (group) mobility model, which is easily understandable and useable, but offers a sufficiently high level of detail regarding the simulated group behavior. In order to reach this goal swarm intelligence techniques are applied since the core ideas of swarm intelligence are a good basis to solve the stated problems. Furthermore the performance and the estimated simulation quality of existing models as well as the newly created model are assessed and compared against each other

    Investigation of the Sympathetic Regulation in Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness: Results of an RCT.

    Sports-related pain and injury is directly linked to tissue inflammation, thus involving the autonomic nervous system (ANS). In the present experimental study, we disable the sympathetic part of the ANS by applying a stellate ganglion block (SGB) in an experimental model of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) of the biceps muscle. We included 45 healthy participants (female 11, male 34, age 24.16 ± 6.67 years [range 18-53], BMI 23.22 ± 2.09 kg/m2) who were equally randomized to receive either (i) an SGB prior to exercise-induced DOMS (preventive), (ii) sham intervention in addition to DOMS (control/sham), or (iii) SGB after the induction of DOMS (rehabilitative). The aim of the study was to determine whether and to what extent sympathetically maintained pain (SMP) is involved in DOMS processing. Focusing on the muscular area with the greatest eccentric load (biceps distal fifth), a significant time × group interaction on the pressure pain threshold was observed between preventive SGB and sham (p = 0.034). There was a significant effect on pain at motion (p = 0.048), with post hoc statistical difference at 48 h (preventive SGB Δ1.09 ± 0.82 cm VAS vs. sham Δ2.05 ± 1.51 cm VAS; p = 0.04). DOMS mediated an increase in venous cfDNA -as a potential molecular/inflammatory marker of DOMS- within the first 24 h after eccentric exercise (time effect p = 0.018), with a peak at 20 and 60 min. After 60 min, cfDNA levels were significantly decreased comparing preventive SGB to sham (unpaired t-test p = 0.008). At both times, 20 and 60 min, cfDNA significantly correlated with observed changes in PPT. The 20-min increase was more sensitive, as it tended toward significance at 48 h (r = 0.44; p = 0.1) and predicted the early decrease of PPT following preventive stellate blocks at 24 h (r = 0.53; p = 0.04). Our study reveals the broad impact of the ANS on DOMS and exercise-induced pain. For the first time, we have obtained insights into the sympathetic regulation of pain and inflammation following exercise overload. As this study is of a translational pilot character, further research is encouraged to confirm and specify our observations
